"Now that you have fallen so low, you still can’t let go of the pretentious air of the Lady Hou you used to be?" Ji Xinhe said with a chilling voice.
Lady Sun abruptly heard the voice of Ji Xinhe, and her body seemed to shiver as she turned around in mild fright. She stared wide-eyed with terrified eyes at the all too familiar figure before her. Even though it had been seven years since they last met, Lady Sun would never forget her face in this lifetime.
"You, you, how could you..." Lady Sun was at a loss, not knowing what to do. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Ji Xinhe made a subtle sign to Xiaoyu and Shulan, they bowed and retreated, closed the door, and stood guard outside.
Only then did Xinhe lift her gaze towards Lady Sun, slowly walking closer. The smirk on her lips bore a hint of cold disdain, "The whole family of Le Yuanhou has been destroyed, and my father is now under arrest and being escorted back to the capital. Yet here you are, living peacefully amidst the tranquil green mountains, taking care of yourself. How carefree you are."
Lady Sun’s face turned considerably pale, she retreated continuously. At this moment, looking at the smile on Ji Xinhe’s face, she felt as if she were looking at a fearsome demon from hell, "What does this have to do with me!? Your father was the one who drove me out of Hou Mansion. The disaster that ensued has nothing to do with me! Why are you looking for me?!"
Xinhe scoffed, "There’s no need to play innocent in front of me, I don’t like to waste time with you. You should be well aware how my father fell into the hands of the imperial court. If it weren’t for my father’s life, how could you be living such a leisure day? Did you really think I was foolish enough to believe that the emperor would let you live without reason?!"
Lady Sun’s entire body staggered, she fell into a chair, her complexion ghostly pale. It had been seven years, she had almost forgotten how cunning the woman now standing before her was, her plans and schemes likely couldn’t be concealed from her eyes.
In fact, as soon as Lady Sun saw Ji Xinhe, she knew that she was in a tight spot this time. Ji Xinhe’s sudden appearance in the capital city, and the fact she went to great lengths to find her in the Qingyuan Temple, clearly suggested that she had full control of the situation. Lady Sun was not foolish, thus, she had a vague idea of her intentions.
Because of this, she panicked as soon as she spotted Ji Xinhe. She had managed to dodge the imperial decree, but couldn’t escape from Ji Xinhe.
"I have no idea what you’re talking about!" Lady Sun cried out, "Ji Xinhe, do you even realize your current predicament? Are you still trying to dominate me? Do you realize where you are standing? This is the Emperor’s territory! As a wife of a condemned criminal, do you dare to be audacious here?!"
Ji Xinhe sneered, she grabbed Lady Sun by the collar and yanked her up, staring at her, "Is that so? Shall I test and see if I have the audacity to act wilfully under the Emperor’s feet?"
Fear filled Lady Sun’s eyes, she looked at Ji Xinhe in terror, shaking her head, "Why can’t you let me go? Why do you have to be against me? I’m already in such a miserable state, why do you still press me?"
She grabbed her collar and said sternly, "Don’t you know why I am behaving this way? Who caused my father’s downfall? Don’t pretend to be ignorant! You are quite capable, it was you who enticed my father to give himself away, letting the imperial court capture him, wasn’t it?"
Lady Sun’s entire body was trembling, she was almost too scared to meet Ji Xinhe’s eyes, "No, that’s not true."
"I don’t need you to admit or deny it." Ji Xinhe coldly curled her lips, then let go of Lady Sun, throwing her back onto the chair. She dusted off her hands, "I have come all the way from Yu State to this capital city, specifically for you, Lady Hou. Can you really believe that at this point, I still care about the truths or lies that come out of your mouth?"
Lady Sun’s complexion blanched further, as she looked up at Ji Xinhe, she felt as though she was staring into the eyes of a demon. Fear pervaded her heart, at this moment, she knew she could not escape. This woman had travelled a long way solely to settle the score with her. How could she possibly let her off the hook?
All of a sudden, Lady Sun laughed, "So what if I was the one who did it? What can you do to me? Ji Xinhe, you are vastly overestimating yourself! All this way to the capital city, apart from killing me to vent your anger, what else can you do? Your father was captured by the imperial court, yet you had to sneak into the capital, utterly helpless, and watch him fall on the execution ground. You are not necessarily winning over me!"
Listening to these provocative words, Xinhe did not show any hint of agitation. Quite the contrary, she leisurely wiped her slender fingers with a handkerchief, as though the touch of Lady Sun’s skin had somehow tainted her hands.
"Lady Hou, isn’t it too early to say such things? I did indeed come to see you upon my arrival in the capital, but my trip to the capital is not just about settling scores with you. If I wasn’t confident of saving my father, why would I risk making this trip?" Ji Xinhe lightly replied with a smile.
Lady Sun was taken aback. She spoke doubtfully, "How could you do that?"
Currently, Le Yuanhou was in the hands of the irate emperor. If one wanted to save him, the only way was if Ji Xinhe turned up with the head of Marquis Mu.
From the looks of it, there was no other possible turn of events.
However, Ji Xinhe looked at Lady Sun with a smirk, speaking enigmatically, "Isn’t there an excellent candidate right in front of us?"
Lady Sun laughed out loud, "Me?! You think too highly of me. I am nothing but a pawn to the emperor. Now, I’m barely clinging onto my life. What makes you think I can help you? Moreover, I have no obligation to help you. In fact, I feel quite pleased seeing the Le Yuanhou family brought low like this. I’ve been suppressing my feelings for so many years!"
As she spoke, her face contorted in bitterness, her teeth gritted in anger.
Ten years of married life, and in the end, all that was left for Lady Sun was boundless hatred.
Xinhe couldn’t help but sigh. If her father were to see his wife, who he had always thought to be gentle and virtuous, behaving like this, she wondered what he would think.
Xinhe looked at her coldly, "You seem so confident. Have you nothing to fear?"
Lady Sun’s bloodshot eyes were almost horrifying to look at, "What would I be afraid of?! What can you use to threaten me now? I am all alone, just like a wandering ghost. At most, you could kill me to vent off your anger!"
Xinhe, however, smiled coldly, "I have come here, to bring you a piece of good news, Lady Sun ... you are not a wandering ghost."
Upon hearing this, Lady Sun was visibly shaken. She froze on the spot and perplexedly asked, "What do you mean?"
