Perhaps because there was a bit of a commotion in the room, Xiaoyu, who was waiting outside, asked hurriedly, "What’s wrong with madam?"
Xin He glanced at someone who was smiling as though he’d succeeded in a prank, showing a bit of annoyance, "It’s okay."
Is it really fine?
Xiaoyu had some doubts, but since the mistress had said it’s okay, she dared not to enter the room. Although Xin He was generally lenient with them, no one dared to cross the line where they should not.
With a casual push against the window frame, Mu Houchu leapt into the room effortlessly, a smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. He looked at her and said, "Are you afraid of seeing me like this? Did you do something guilty that you don’t want me to know?"
"Yeah, there’s a man hidden in my room!" She glared at this juvenile, feeling very annoyed.
Showing up at her window in the middle of the night just to scare her!
The smile on Mu Houchu’s face froze. He pinched her chin, his demeanor chilling, "I’m giving you another chance to explain."
Xin He hurriedly replied, "I wouldn’t dare, my lord."
Only then was Mu Houchu satisfied. His large hand scooped her up, enveloping her in a warm embrace, his head buried in her neck as he murmured, "Xin He, I missed you."
"You came here in the middle of the night, just to say that?" Xin He couldn’t help but feel both amused and annoyed.
"Yes, I couldn’t sleep because I missed you so much, so I rushed over immediately. Why did you take so long to come back? I’ve been counting the days, unable to wait for your return. If you didn’t return, I would have come to the capital city to fetch you."
Xin He found his childish words amusing, and her heart felt warm and comfortable. She chuckled, "I missed you too."
"Can’t sleep because you miss me?"
Xin He replied with annoyance, "Why do you always like to flatter yourself?"
Mu Houchu chuckled and released Xin He. He looked down and saw her bare feet. The smile on his face disappeared, "Why aren’t you wearing shoes when you get out of bed?"
He bent down to lift her in his arms, his face turning stern, "I knew I couldn’t trust you to go out alone. You’ve always done things that cause me worry."
Xin He allowed him to carry her to the bed. Hooking her arm around his neck, she snuggled into his embrace and said quietly. "Yes, when I’m outside, I realise how much I rely on you."
Whenever she encountered any problems, she would always think, what would Mu Houchu do in this situation?
Even when she was barefoot, she would start to think, if Mu Houchu was there, he would surely scold her. It felt like she was alone on a long journey, but Mu Houchu’s name accompanied her all the time, making it almost impossible for her to forget.
Mu Houchu pinched her cheek, "Only when you go out do you notice my worth? Usually, when I nag at you a little, you get upset."
Xin He blinked her eyes innocently, "When did I lose my patience?"
Looking at Xin He’s expression, Mu Houchu found out where Ah Guai learned her innocent looks from.
Whenever she did something wrong, she would give him that innocent and pitiful look, her big, bright eyes just like her mother’s. Mu Houchu really didn’t know what to do with her.
Mu Houchu looked at Xin He with a frosty expression, "There’s one more thing."
"What is it?"
"When you returned to the capital, did you see Duan Lan?" asked Mu Houchu, with unexpected coolness.
Xin He laughed, "You’re getting upset because of this? When I went to the capital, naturally, I would bump into him. We just exchanged a few words."
"What did you talk about?" The look on Mu Houchu’s face was still unsatisfied.
It seemed like whenever Duan Lan’s name came up, he wouldn’t be in a good mood.
Xin He said, "He? He said he doesn’t want to see me anymore."
Mu Houchu raised an eyebrow, "Really?"
"Of course it’s true. Why would I lie about this? Worst case, you can ask him yourself. He probably doesn’t want to see you either," Xin He laughed, "Actually, after all these years, I’m quite pleased that Duan Lan is finally able to let go."
Mu Houchu said, "Letting go doesn’t mean he’s got over it."
Some things can never really be forgotten in one’s lifetime.
The same for Duan Lan, the same for Mu Houchu. Because he understood it, he knew Duan Lan’s regret, and he knew the regret that nothing could ever make up for in his life.
Xin He was slightly taken aback, and then laughed, "But being able to let go is better than not letting go, at least."
This would give him other opportunities, other paths. As for when he could truly let go in his heart, that was up to fate.
Mu Houchu had a hint of a smile on his lips, "As long as he doesn’t bother me, we’re good."
Xin He took a deep breath and said with a smile, "That’s good."
Mu Houchu touched her cheek, "What’s good?"
Xin He giggled, "Because everything seems to be better now. Duan Lan is an old friend of mine. It’s good that he chose to let go, at least he has an opportunity to be happy in the future. I successfully rescued my father without regret. Now I’m in your arms, and Ah Guai is at home waiting for us. All of this makes me feel good."
Mu Houchu smiled, "Are your dreams that small?"
Xin He snuggled up to him in his arms, "They’ve always been small, so I’m very satisfied."
Because he was there, everything seemed to easily be enough.
Mu Houchu chuckled. Suddenly, Xin He seemed to remember something and said, "If Xiao Chaihu could work harder and become a respectable scholar sooner, I would be even happier."
Upon hearing the words "Xiao Chaihu", the smile on Mu Houchu’s face seemed to stiffen and he found the words irritating.
Two months ago, the news of Xin He’s departure was kept a secret. However, the cunning Li Nan found out. As soon as he heard that Xin He had gone to the capital city, he wanted to go there immediately without a second thought. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
If it weren’t for the tight control Mu Houchu had over Yu State, he wouldn’t even know where Li Nan had gone now.
Xiao Chaihu wanted to leave Yu State - It wasn’t Mu Houchu’s business. But if he wanted to find Xin He, Mu Houchu couldn’t bear it. Initially, Xiao Chaihu was discreet, but once he learned that Xin He might be in danger, he ignored everything else. His heart was clear to everyone, how could Mu Houchu bear it?
Seeing Mu Houchu’s face darken, Xin He tentatively asked, "What’s wrong? Did Xiao Chaihu get into trouble?"
That wasn’t right. She could believe that Xiao Bei would get into trouble, but Xiao Chaihu seemed too steady to cause any?
Mu Houchu spoke mildly, "Nothing much. He just heard that you went to the capital and wanted to follow you."
Xin He laughed, "When did this kid become so impulsive? Forget it, either way, I’m going back. I’ll give him a good scolding when I’m back."
