As she thought about it, she couldn’t help but cast an exasperated look at her blockheaded big brother, who was indeed blind as a bat.
"Alright, I’m quite tired myself, so I’ll head back to my room and rest," Ji Xinhe said.
"Mm."
"I’ll have my brother assist you so you won’t have to work all by yourself. It is tough for one person."
Upon hearing Ji Xinhe’s next sentence, Zheng Xiaocui’s cheeks stiffened, and she quickly waved her hands, "No, no, that’s not necessary!"
Ji Xinhe shouted at Ji Dong, "Brother, come and help, Xiao Cui is working all by herself here."
Ji Dong, as blockheaded as he was and incredibly trusting towards his sister, had no idea about her ulterior motives. Hearing Ji Xinhe’s call, he naturally hurried over to help, "Ah, alright."
Ji Xinhe rubbed her forehead, looking visibly worn out, "I’ll go and rest now. Big brother, please help Xiao Cui finish these chores."
"You’re also tired, go rest soon," Ji Dong urged.
Just as Zheng Xiaocui tried to speak with a lump in her throat, Ji Xinhe added, "Right, it’s getting dark outside, it may not be safe for Xiao Cui to go home alone. I heard there were burglars in our village recently. Big brother, remember to escort Xiao Cui home."
"Rest assured, that’s only right. Those burglars from before were indeed quite frightening." Ji Dong said solemnly.
Zheng Xiaocui’s face reddened, "Actually there’s no need..."
"I’ll be off then," Ji Xinhe cut off Zheng Xiaocui’s words, turned her head to look at her simplistic and ignorant big brother, shook her head helplessly, and then turned to leave.
She hoped that her big brother would come to his senses soon. The best girl in the entire village was right here. What a pity it would be if he missed out on her?
Xiao Bei was already asleep. After Ji Xinhe left, only Zheng Xiaocui and Ji Dong remained in the room. This was the first time that Zheng Xiaocui had ever been alone with him. She was at a loss for words because of her shyness, but deep down there was a tiny sense of joy...
"Xiao Cui, if you’re tired, I can take you home now. I can finish the rest of the chores myself," Ji Dong suggested, seeing Zheng Xiaocui standing there transfixed, assuming she was tired.
Zheng Xiaocui hurriedly bowed her head, hiding her somewhat heated cheeks, "No, it’s just a little bit of work left. The two of us can finish it faster."
When she said "the two of us," Zheng Xiaocui’s face reddened even more.
But luckily, the room was rather dim. Ji Dong wasn’t paying attention to these details and hence didn’t notice. He simply nodded, "Alright, let’s finish up quickly then. After that, I can take you home."
Zheng Xiaocui replied in a low voice, "Mm."
Ji Xinhe stood outside the room listening for a while before she couldn’t help but laugh and walk away.
Upon reaching her room, Ji Xinhe immediately collapsed on the bed. Actually, what she said earlier wasn’t entirely false. She was indeed very tired, and her body was indeed weak. These past few days, she had been consuming nutritious food, mostly containing meat to improve her health, but it wasn’t something that could be resolved in a day or two.
Ji Xinhe lay on the bed without moving, deciding to just close her eyes and sleep.
She was suddenly startled by the "squeak" sound of the door being pushed open.
Immediately alert, Ji Xinhe sat up and stared with wide eyes in the direction of the sound.
Mu Houchu lifted the corner of his mouth, "What? Are you afraid of robbers? You seem so wary."
He entered the room nonchalantly as he spoke.
Completely ignoring her wide-eyed stare.
She’s afraid of robbers? No, she’s afraid of him!
However, Ji Xinhe would never voice out these thoughts, after all, she values her dignity!
"What are you doing here!" Ji Xinhe glared at him, like an irritated little wild cat.
What’s she getting so mad about? He hadn’t done anything!
Mu Houchu chuckled, "I came to see you."
Ji Xinhe gritted her teeth, "Speak human language!"
Mu Houchu touched his nose before finally saying, "I’m actually a severely injured patient."
"What does that have to do with me!" This man really had the audacity to act pitiful in front of her? 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"Don’t you have to apply medicine for me?"
The innocent and naive expression on Mu Houchu’s face almost made Ji Xinhe believe that the beastly episode last time was just a dream!
Ji Xinhe stiffened and forced a smile, unconsciously shifting backwards, she gritted her teeth and managed to spit out one word through them.
"Get lost."
Looking at her as though she was facing a great enemy, Mu Houchu couldn’t help but laugh, "Alright, I won’t tease you anymore."
Ji Xinhe’s eyes widened in disbelief, tease?! Was he teasing a cat?!
Mu Houchu placed the basin he was holding on the cabinet, his slender hand dipped the towel in the warm water before wringing it out and handed the hot towel to Ji Xinhe, "Wipe your face first."
Ji Xinhe stared at him in astonishment. She never would have thought that this man, who appeared so high-class, would actually do such trivial things. Did he really come just to bring her water to wash her face with?
Ji Xinhe looked at him suspiciously, "There isn’t poison in this water, is there?"
At this, Mu Houchu’s mouth twitched, then he grasped her hand, quite like grabbing a chick, and pivoted her towards him. One hand steadied the back of her head, the other one placed the hot towel on her face, "You’ve been working all day and you plan to sleep just like that? At least wash your face, soak your feet, it’ll soothe your body. You’re as thin as bean sprouts, yet still exhaust yourself needlessly."
"You’re the one who’s like bean sprouts!" Ji Xinhe pulled off the towel from her face, saying indignantly.
Mu Houchu raised an eyebrow, "Isn’t it you who has experienced whether I’m like bean sprouts or not?"
Ji Xinhe’s face immediately turned crimson, she angrily pushed him away, "Get lost!"
This old pervert, he was all innocent just a moment ago then he reveals his true colors so quickly! She had, unbelievably, felt a little moved by his unexpected gentle actions just now. It’s practically ridiculous!
Mu Houchu chuckled and complied with her "push away," giving her the opportunity to vent her emotions. In reality, all he did was take two steps back. Ji Xinhe’s kung fu was not bad, but her strength was really lacking. She was just too stubborn to admit it.
"I’ll bring in another basin of hot water for you. You can soak your feet before you sleep." After saying this, he took away the towel and the basin of water.
Ji Xinhe sat dumbfoundedly, watching Mu Houchu’s retreating back in a daze. In his actions and words earlier, there seemed to be a hint of indulgence. Why was he being so nice to her?
Didn’t he want to kill her before?
Could this man be bewitched?
Even more bewitching was the fact that she was beginning to feel, just a little, a tiny flutter, and a vague sense of joy.
