Shulan asked, "The sudden visit from Lady Sun from the Song family, could there be some urgent matter?"
To this, Xin He chuckled lightly, "We’re strangers; what urgent matter could she possibly have with us? She didn’t even send a visiting card; she just came right to our doorstep. To be frank, it’s nothing other than contempt. This mother and daughter pair both have superior attitudes."
Upon hearing this, Shulan’s face crinkled, "She looks down on us yet couldn’t wait to come to us, I say they are all shameless! This servant here shall send them away!"
But Xin He said, "No rush, since she’s probably come to me for a reason - let’s first find out what she’s got to say."
Now that Marquis Mu Houchu is about to collaborate with the Song family, everything related to the Song family intrigued Xin He, and the visitor who delivered herself to her door, how could she bear to turn her away?
"Shall I invite her in then?" Shulan reluctantly asked.
Xin He lightly grinned, "Leave her hanging a bit before inviting her in."
Shulan blinked, immediately understanding, and responded, "Yes!"
Lady Sun had been waiting in the outer hall for the time it takes to burn an incense stick, and her anger was gradually building. Finding that her teacup was almost empty, she could no longer hold back her indignation.
"What’s going on?! I have been waiting for half a day and there isn’t the slightest sound from inside. Is your madam putting on airs? Doesn’t she realize who I am?" Lady Sun angrily slapped the table causing the teacup beside her to clink.
Shulan, unfazed, responded, "Lady Sun, please calm down. Our madam is currently pregnant and not in the best condition, so please wait a little longer."
Lady Sun, having never experienced such treatment, would have stormed out if it weren’t for the matter she needed to discuss.
Thus, she continued waiting for another half incense stick time, with no one in sight. Frustrated, Lady Sun stood up, "Are you toying with me? Call out your master right now to meet me! Or else you won’t be let off lightly!"
Inwardly, Shulan rolled her eyes, ’This is the Mu house, I am not your servant, exactly who can you let off lightly?’
However, Shulan pretended to be naive, "Lady Sun, why get so angry? Careful not to harm your health. Just wait a little longer. In the East Warm Chamber, while the maids and women were preparing teas and pastries, Xin He casually sipped tea from her seat in a plush armchair.
Lady Sun entered the room in a fury, and on seeing her, Xin He looked up and with a smirk said, "I was wondering who it might be; it turns out Lady Sun has traveled a great distance to be here. Someone, quickly arrange seating for Lady Sun."
Taken aback by Xin He’s radiant smile, Lady Sun almost flinched. She hadn’t expected the woman her daughter had despised and insulted to be so beautiful.
Lady Sun quickly collected herself, with an added trace of disdain in her gaze. She thought, ’As expected, a seductress. No different from the coquettes in my father-in-law’s courtyard!’
"Lady Mu has really good manners, making me wait outside for so long. Those who didn’t know might have thought I was dealing with a real grandeur." Lady Sun exclaimed sarcastically.
Xin He responded with resignation, "It’s a shame that Lady Sun didn’t send the visiting card in advance which left me unprepared. So, while we were busy with other matters in the mansion, I could only trouble you to wait for a while. If it were anyone other than Lady who unannouncedly visited, I might have not agreed to meet."
Lady Sun gritted her teeth, interpreting Xin He’s words to mean that she had been made to wait on purpose because she hadn’t sent a visiting card. And quite openly at that!
"But, since Lady Sun purposely visited today, do you have any important matters to discuss with me?" Xin He asked. It was apparent that she had no interest in insincere small talk with Lady Sun and wanted to get straight to the point.
Lady Sun huffed coldly, sitting upright as if trying to gather up her commanding presence. She raised her voice noticeably, "Indeed, I do have some business with you."
"Might I inquire what it is?" The voice of Xin He remained soft and gentle. Perhaps due to her pregnancy, she was less assertive than before and had even acquired a touch of softness.
Leaning back casually in her armchair, she displayed a carefree attitude. Completely disregarding Lady Sun’s deliberately heightened intimidation felt like punching into cotton – plain dull.
Lady Sun scowled, clearly displeased with the power play of the situation. Nonetheless, she cleared her throat, "I’ve heard that the Mu family runs a small business. You do hold a decent fortune, but I wonder... what’s the background of Lady Mu?"
Xin He raised her eyebrows - now what was Lady Sun up to, suddenly taking interest in her family?
But the moment of surprise only flickered in her eyes, and she soon smiled, "I come from a farming family in Yangluo Bay, which Lady Sun might not have heard of."
Unexpectedly, Xin He was so straightforward. Lady Sun was taken aback and soon after, growing even more cynical, scoffed, "I thought you might be from some notable family. Turns out you’re just a farmer’s daughter. This explains it - no wonder your husband is still running a mediocre business. Marrying such a useless wife, it is natural for him to be on the decline."
Xin He, with the innocence of a curious child, blinked, "So what grand ideas does Lady Sun have?"
