Chapter Twenty-Three: Falling into a Pit

“Aunt Zhang, we can’t panic. We’ll deal with whatever comes our way. If they’re ruthless, then we’ll be ruthless too,” Xi Chun said calmly. On the way back, she already had an idea.

The Chen family had already reached an agreement with the Wu family, but now they weren't informing her directly. Xi Chun guessed there were only two possibilities: either the betrothal gifts hadn't arrived yet, or they wanted to force her to submit through improper means.

Xichun, Aunt Zhang, and Uncle Zhang secretly went to Wujia Village and saw what the idiot looked like. This idiot usually liked to play with the other children, and even when he was bullied, he was still happy.

Every morning and evening, Uncle Zhang would bring Taozi to help them pull the cart. However, on the return trip, the two of them would hide to the side and wait until Chen Cuihua's family had passed before coming out, so that they wouldn't see them. If the Chen family were planning to make a move, they could find the right opportunity.

"Xichun, look, there really is someone watching us from over there, and your aunt is here too." Aunt Zhang was also keeping an eye on the surroundings, and sure enough, she spotted a woman who was watching Xichun's stall but didn't come over.

"I think she looks a bit like that fool's mother. It seems they're secretly looking at each other." Xichun continued talking to Aunt Zhang without revealing her true feelings.

"I don't know if the Wu family really didn't find out what you said, or if they just had their eye on you. I think your guess is probably true." Aunt Zhang also felt a deep sense of fear. If they hadn't known about this beforehand, something terrible might have happened to Xichun.

That day, on their way home, Chen Cuihua wore a look of anticipation, and the family deliberately walked ahead of Xichun, quickly disappearing from sight.

This spot is only wide enough for one car to pass through, and there are thatches on both sides, with a layer of snow that had just fallen that morning on the grass.

"Oh dear, Zhang family, my car is stuck in the mud, and my husband's foot is injured too. Please come and help me!" Chen Cuihua's cries came from behind. Usually, she couldn't wait for Aunt Zhang to have bad luck, but today she was unusually running over to call for Aunt Zhang behind her.

"What does it have to do with me that your car got stuck? You deserve it." Aunt Zhang and Xichun exchanged a glance, both thinking to themselves, "Here we go again. This tactic is too low-level."

"Oh dear, why are you like this? If you don't go, your car won't be able to get through either. You should let Xichun stay here and guard the place; she's still young and not strong enough." Chen Cuihua's acting was terrible, completely out of character. It seemed that even if they didn't know beforehand, they could guess what had happened.

Xichun gave Aunt Zhang a wink, and Aunt Zhang followed her away, seemingly resigned, telling Xichun to wait there and call them if anything happened.

"Oh dear, what could possibly happen? Let's go." Chen Cuihua, worried that they might notice something amiss, pulled Aunt Zhang away.

After the two left, Xichun saw Uncle Zhang and Taozi hiding to the side, shivering in the grass.

Hearing the rustling sound, Xichun picked up the kitchen knife.

"Hehehe, wife, wife, I want my wife." A fool ran over and went straight to Xichun.

"Who are you? What do you want?" As soon as Xichun saw him, she knew he was that idiot from Wujia Village.

"I want to hold my wife." The fool didn't understand anything; he only remembered what his mother had said: if he held that girl and wouldn't let go, she would be his wife.

"Help! Someone help me!" Xichun shouted, feigning panic.

Upon receiving the order, Uncle Zhang and the others rushed out and grabbed the mentally challenged man. Taozi even took the opportunity to kick him.

"You dared to bully my sister Xichun, I'll teach you a lesson today."

"Mom, I've been hit!" the simpleton cried.

"Tell me, who told you to do this?" Xi Chun brandished the kitchen knife in front of him. The fool was indeed frightened. He knew that the knife was very dangerous and would make people bleed.

"It's my mother and aunt. My aunt and mother both said that as long as I hold you, you'll be my wife." The fool wailed, wondering why these two had been tying him up so he didn't even have hands to hold his wife.

When Aunt Zhang arrived at the Chen family's car, she saw Wang Fuzi squatting there alone; both of Wang's sons were nowhere to be seen.

"I just saw your son, how come you and your son are both gone now?"

“They went to the village to find people. I’m worried that the two of us won’t be able to get it done, so it’s good to get more people. Anyway, it’s close to the village.”

"Then why did you call me here? Aren't you just joking with me? I'm going back now. I'm worried about leaving Xichun there alone."

“What’s there to worry about? Xichun is a grown woman. Besides, this place is so close to the village. What is she afraid of? Please help me. Come on, let’s push it together.” Chen Cuihua was worried that her going back would ruin the plan, so she quickly pulled her back.

"Hey, did you hear that? I heard Xichun shouting. Oh no, I have to go back and check." Aunt Zhang heard what Xichun shouted and, remembering that her husband and Taozi had been hiding there, deliberately asked.

"Really? I didn't hear anything. Wang Fuzi, did you hear anything?" Wang Fuzi was pretending to have foot pain at this time. When she saw Chen Cuihua's question, she shook her head and said that she hadn't heard anything.

"That's strange. I clearly heard Xichun's voice. I'd better go check it out."

"Hey, look, it seems a bit loose. Can you help me push it out first? We'll go see Xichun in a little while." Chen Cuihua deliberately pushed the car a bit with extra force.

Just as the two were about to exert force, they saw several villagers running over. They had all heard that the car was stuck in the ditch and came to help.

With the help of several people, they quickly pushed the car out of the pit. Just as they turned to go back, Chen Cuihua suddenly said, "By the way, we just heard Xichun shouting for help. I wonder if the car is also stuck in the pit. Everyone, go and help her out and see what's going on."

“Alright, Xichun is a young girl, she really can’t refuse.” The others didn’t think much of it and followed. Aunt Zhang’s eyes were full of hatred as she looked at Chen Cuihua. This whole family was trying to ruin Xichun’s reputation.

Chen Cuihua originally thought that when they arrived they would see Xichun being held by someone, but when they arrived at the scene, they saw the mentally challenged man being tied up by Uncle Zhang and his brother, and Xichun threatening him with a knife.

"Oh dear, Xichun, what are you doing? How did a man suddenly appear here?" Chen Cuihua asked, forcing herself to speak even though she already knew the answer.

"Oh, can't you see clearly? This person suddenly ran towards me. If Uncle Zhang and the others hadn't happened to be passing by, I would have been in big trouble today. But luckily, I've already found out who the culprit is. Since you uncles are here, please help me take this person to the village so the village chief can interrogate him."

Xi Chun pointed the knife at her and said in a sinister tone.
