She tapped on the driver's seat and asked in English, "Do you have a charging cable?"
"No."
Song Nuan reluctantly put away her phone.
It wasn't a big deal that she hadn't finished talking to Li Jingchen; Song Nuan was more worried about not being able to contact Cen Wan. She only had the hospital's location and didn't know Lei Miao's exact location.
I arrived at the hospital with trepidation.
As soon as Song Nuan got out of the car, Cen Wan rushed towards her, calling out, "Nuan Nuan!"
"Aunt Cen?" Song Nuan asked in surprise.
"When I arrived, I tried to call your phone, but it was switched off. I was worried something might have happened to you, so I've been waiting here."
"My phone is out of battery and has turned off."
Upon hearing this, Cen Wan breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, it was just a power outage. Heaven knows how turbulent her emotions were during the hour she couldn't contact Song Nuan.
My mind went through all sorts of bad things.
Taking Song Nuan's arm, Cen Wan led her inside, saying, "It's good that you're alright, let's go."
As Song Nuan walked, she asked, "How did you find Lei Miao?"
“I’ve been keeping an eye on pharmacies and hospitals. Lei Miao is old and very likely to be sick. Since we can’t find anything in other places, we can only start from there. I never thought I would actually find something.”
Song Nuan silently gave a thumbs up.
I never expected that this pampered lady who had never lifted a finger in the Qin family would be so skilled at finding people.
Cen Wan smiled sheepishly.
The elevator doors slowly opened, and stepping out led directly to the operating room. Only a simply dressed middle-aged woman was waiting at the door, creating a rather somber atmosphere.
The lights in the operating room didn't seem so glaring anymore.
Upon seeing them, the middle-aged woman looked puzzled. "Who are you?"
“We are Lei Miao’s friends.”
The middle-aged woman eyed the two warily, noticing their foreign appearances, and asked with some skepticism, "I've never heard Teacher Lei mention you before?"
Teacher Lei?
Song Nuan and Cen Wan turned their heads in unison, their eyes meeting in mid-air, both seeing surprise in each other's eyes.
“Aunt Lei used to work as a nanny in my house,” Song Nuan explained.
Upon hearing this, the middle-aged woman seemed to remember something and lowered her guard. "Teacher Lei told me that she did indeed work for a wealthy family before."
Song Nuan found it strange; wasn't Lei Miao supposed to have taken care of his mother since she was a child?
She had never heard of her mother's family being wealthy, but then she thought that perhaps the wealthy family Lei Miao was referring to when he spoke of the middle-aged woman was the Song family.
"What's Lei Miao's condition now? How could she suddenly become so seriously ill?" Cen Wan asked.
The middle-aged woman sighed, "Teacher Lei had a serious illness more than ten years ago, and his heart has been weak ever since. Taking care of the children over the years has taken a toll on his health."
"More than ten years ago?" Song Nuan repeated in a low voice.
The more she asked, the stranger it seemed. Before she could ask, the middle-aged woman explained it herself.
She is the director of an orphanage.
Lei Miao started working at the orphanage nineteen years ago. Not long after, she fell seriously ill. Coupled with the complicated work at the orphanage, Lei Miao's health deteriorated afterward.
Song Nuan calculated the time and found that Du Fanyu had disappeared nineteen years ago.
She asked the dean anxiously, "Did Aunt Lei mention her former employer to you?"
The dean shook his head, denying it, but then found the two people really strange. "Are you really Professor Lei's friends?"
"Of course."
Cen Wan interrupted, giving Song Nuan a wink.
Song Nuan knew that now was not a good time to press for answers, so she had to suppress her impulse.
The surgery was completed an hour later.
The doctor declared her critically ill and shook his head, saying, "We've done everything we can. The patient's condition is really bad; she's experiencing organ failure. If we're lucky, she'll wake up, and you might be able to say a few words to her."
"How could this be..."
Song Nuan couldn't believe it; she felt as if she had fallen into an ice cave.
She finally managed to find some news about her mother, only to be told that Lei Miao was critically ill and couldn't be saved.
She clutched the bag chain. "Aunt Cen, let's transfer Lei Miao to a better hospital."
"Transfer to another hospital?" The doctor roughly understood a few words and advised, "Her body has reached its limit. Transferring her to another hospital will only hasten her death. Don't do anything to her."
The dean also disagreed.
“You are just Teacher Lei’s friends, you have no right to do this.”
Country A places great importance on human rights.
Even if Song Nuan's original intention was to prolong Lei Miao's life.
Now, their only hope is that Lei Miao can briefly regain his senses.
However, things did not go as planned.
When the death notice came out, Song Nuan felt her blood run cold instantly. She watched as the nurse pushed Lei Miao past her, her emotions a complex mix of feelings.
It was so close.
"Nuan Nuan, there may be other clues."
Cen Wan's words of comfort were of no use to her, but Song Nuan still managed a forced expression in response, "I know, Aunt Cen."
As soon as she finished speaking, Cen Wan's phone rang.
She patted Song Nuan on the shoulder and walked to the side to answer the phone.
Who is it?
"Madam Qin, I am Lu Ziyang."
Cen Wan frowned, thinking she had misheard, and asked again uncertainly, "Who are you?"
Instead of answering, Li Jingchen asked, "Where is Song Nuan now?"
“She’s with me.” Cen Wan really couldn’t stand this handsome but arrogant junior, and her usually gentle tone turned cold. “You need her for something?”
"As long as she's safe."
After saying that, he hung up immediately.
Cen Wan was a little angry, "That's so rude!"
"Aunt Cen, whose phone call was that?" Song Nuan happened to walk over and heard her muttering, so she asked a couple of questions.
"Harassing phone calls".
Song Nuan said "Oh" without thinking much about it, and said, "I just talked to the director and will accompany her back to the orphanage to sort through Lei Miao's belongings and see if there are any clues about my mother."
"I'll go with you."
As the sedan drove out of the hospital, a discreet Audi drove into the hospital.
"The number you dialed is currently switched off. Please try again later..."
Li Jingchen frowned and hung up the phone. As he walked inside, he sent a text message to Cen Wan.
at the same time.
After charging in Cen Wan's car, Song Nuan's phone finally turned on. The moment the screen lit up, call notifications and new message alerts popped up one after another.
She called Li Jingchen first.
"Song Nuan!"
"Let me explain first." Sensing the man's anger, Song Nuan hurriedly said, "My phone was dead and turned off. I didn't mean to not contact you. I just plugged it in."
Li Jingchen let out a breath, "Where are you now?"
He located the hospital using Cen Wan's number, but once there, he couldn't contact her.
"I'm on my way to the orphanage."
What are you going to the orphanage for?
With Cen Wan right next to her, Song Nuan couldn't explain too much, so she simply said, "I'm going to get something. It's hard to explain right now. I'll explain when we get back."
"you……"
"Beep beep—"
Li Jingchen's forehead veins bulged; she actually hung up on him again?
Cen Wan glanced at her and asked, as expected, "Nuan Nuan, how far have things progressed between you and Lu Ziyang?"
That wasn't an abrupt question.
At least Song Nuan couldn't tell whether it was concern from an elder or a test from her former mother-in-law.
