Chapter 28: People are like rainbows, you only know their existence when you meet them

At night, there were bursts of thunder and rain.

Lightning illuminated Cong Nian's room again and again.

Cong Nian hugged a big white teddy bear and huddled up with her face buried in the quilt.

The air conditioner was on in the room, but she still broke out in a cold sweat.

Suddenly, Cong Nian sat up from the bed and checked the time on his phone.

00:06

She had been tossing and turning in bed for over an hour and couldn't fall asleep.

Another flash of lightning, Cong Nian covered her head, her shadow reflected on the wall.

After hesitating for a long time, Cong Nian finally came to He Sui's door holding the doll.

There was a night light on in the hallway, but she didn't dare knock on He Sui's door.

What if he's already asleep?

The hand that wanted to knock on the door dropped and hung limply at his side.

Just as I was about to go back to my room, a flash of lightning suddenly appeared.

The wind blew in from the gap in the window, and the curtains fluttered a few times.

Cong Nian was terrified.

He bit his lower lip hard to prevent himself from screaming.

His legs went weak and he fell against He Suimen with a dull thud.

Cong Nian covered his mouth, and there was a slight taste of rust in his mouth.

I probably bit my lip too hard just now and it broke.

Tears welled up in her eyes as Cong Nian thought of the days when she had to spend stormy nights alone.

Both of her parents are workaholics. In order to give her a better life, they often stay in the company until late at night or go on various business trips.

A business trip lasts for more than half a month.

The family hired a nanny to take care of her daily life 24 hours a day.

But the nanny didn't know that she was afraid of the dark and thunder.

She studied hard, always ranked first in exams, and all her teachers and classmates liked her.

If only she behaved a little, they could go home earlier to spend time with her.

On countless thundery and windy nights, she put on her headphones, curled up in her quilt, and hugged her teddy bear.

Listening to the voice messages her mother sent her over and over again.

I can only fall into a deep sleep when I am no longer afraid.

Huddled at He Sui's door with her knees hugged, Cong Nian buried her face in the soft big teddy bear beside her.

Whimpering softly, feeling aggrieved and helpless.

The door behind him opened at some point, but Cong Nian didn't notice.

He Sui had been waiting for her for a long time.

He didn't even play games, but just sat at the desk by the door reading a book, glancing at the clock from time to time, waiting for her to knock on the door.

This wait lasted more than three hours.

Just as I was dozing off with my chin propped up, something seemed to hit the door, and my sleepiness was instantly gone.

He rubbed the mark on his chin before opening the door.

But...why is she crying?

His thin shoulders trembled, and his heart ached.

If you were so scared, why didn't you knock on his door?

Fortunately, he had good hearing, otherwise she would have to sit at his door all night?

He Sui knelt beside Cong Nian, without saying anything, opened his arms and hugged her and the doll in his arms.

The sudden warmth caught her off guard.

She raised her head from the doll with tearful eyes, and heard He Sui laughing softly in her ear:

"I cried like a kitten."

Cong Nian opened her mouth and wanted to say something, but his index finger pressed against her lips.

"Shh, Mom and Dad are already asleep, let's be quiet."

He Sui stood up, easily carried her up, and closed the door with his foot.

"Why aren't you asleep yet?"

Cong Nian's eyes were red, her tone was nasal, and she sounded like she was acting coquettishly when she spoke.

He Sui poured a cup of hot water and handed it to her.

He took another blanket from the closet and wrapped her in it.

"I'm waiting for you."

He Sui sat on the chair next to her, supporting his chin and looking at her.

"If you don't come, I'll go to your room to find you."

Cong Nian, who was originally sad, was amused by his words.

"Why are you saying that so scary?"

He Sui took out two tissues and wiped away the little tears from the corners of her eyes.

Sighed softly.

"If you're scared, just say it out loud. Don't keep it to yourself."

The familiar words hit her heart like a small hammer.

"If he bullies you, tell me, don't keep it to yourself."

"If you are unhappy, tell me, don't carry it alone."

Cong Nian was a little stunned and hugged the big bear stuffed animal in his hand tightly.

He He also said many similar things to her.

"I'm not that scared."

Cong Nian used her fingertips to twist the hair that hung in front of her.

"Being brave again."

He Sui said it all in one sentence.

Cong Nian stopped talking and lowered his head, like a child who had done something wrong and was waiting to be criticized.

The two were silent for a long time.

He Sui got up and changed the tea in the cup in her hand for a new one until the steam in the cup was gone.

"Aren't you curious about the bet I made with the instructor?"

He Sui put the newly poured hot water into her hand and spoke.

He had a premonition.

If he didn't speak, this guy would never take the initiative to talk to him.

We can't just sit there like this all night, right?
