"There is no limit to shamelessness."
Old Master Du said quietly.
"That's what Teacher Zhang told me..."
Xia Lan told Old Master Du what Zhang Qiu had said to her, and Old Master Du just sighed softly after listening.
“My daughter only listens to my son-in-law. Asking her to divorce him is like asking her to die. I can’t persuade her, and I don’t want to.”
Old Du sighed again. When his daughter was young, he was always busy with his career, and his wife took care of her as she grew up.
When he came to his senses, his daughter had reached marriageable age. He wanted her to marry one of his favorite students, but his daughter strongly opposed it.
Not long after, she brought her son-in-law to her door, saying she wanted to marry him.
He could tell that his son-in-law wasn't an honest man, but his daughter was determined to marry him, and he couldn't argue with her, so he agreed.
After they got married, his daughter came home and complained to him about her son-in-law's job, asking for his help. He called his son-in-law over, but the son-in-law denied it.
This made him dislike his son-in-law even more, but they continued to get along like this, and his son-in-law still did a lot of things outside in his name.
Every time he loses his temper, his daughter runs out to protect her son-in-law, which makes him so angry that he doesn't know what to say.
"Children and grandchildren have their own blessings. You've been through so much, so relax and enjoy your retirement!"
Xia Lan fell silent after hearing this. It was clear that Old Du's daughter had been brainwashed. The only way to bring her back to her senses was for her son-in-law to reveal his true colors.
"As for your son-in-law, don't worry about it. You can see what kind of person he is most clearly at times like this. Let your daughter see for herself whether her heartfelt devotion is worth it."
Upon hearing this, Old Du paused for a moment, then his eyes hardened.
"Yes, I'll listen to you! No matter how much I say, it's useless. She should see for herself whether the man she chose is worth trading her old father for."
He sincerely wanted his daughter to see her son-in-law's true colors, but his daughter just felt that he was deliberately slandering her son-in-law and didn't believe him.
"Whether it's a donkey or a horse, we'll find out once we take it out for a walk!" Xia Lan smirked.
"If he still protects his daughter until the very end, then it proves that your daughter made the right choice."
Old Du remained silent, glanced at Xia Lan, and nodded.
The aroma of food began to waft from the kitchen. Xia Lan and Old Master Du exchanged a glance, and together they tacitly moved all the tea sets off the tea table to the side, clearing the table.
Just as I finished tidying up, Qin Yu's voice came through.
"Dinner's ready."
Qin Yu carried the dishes out of the kitchen. Xia Lan and Old Du immediately went to take them, but Qin Yu glared at them and forced them to obediently return to their seats.
Like two children who had made a mistake, they sat obediently waiting for 'Father Qin'.
Qin Yu brought out the dishes and placed them on the table, and even added rice for them.
"Eat!"
Qin Yu looked at the old woman and the young woman and said.
Old Du picked up his rice bowl and started putting food into the dish with his chopsticks.
"Wow, your cooking skills are absolutely amazing!" Old Du said happily as he ate.
"Where did these river shrimp come from?" Xia Lan asked, her eyes sparkling as she looked at the braised shrimp on the table.
She hadn't seen shrimp in a long time.
Qin Yu smiled and pointed at Old Du.
"It seems that someone delivers vegetables to Old Du's kitchen every day."
"I happened to see some shrimp and fish, so I cooked them."
Old Du nodded as he ate.
"Yes, yes, yes, someone delivers vegetables to me every day. But I'm just an old man. I'm lucky if I can even cook rice. How would I know how to cook shrimp or fish?"
He is confident that he can cook a decent meal and noodles, and the hardships of the past ten years have made him increasingly easy to feed.
A hot meal with pickled vegetables is delicious.
"Is there no one to take care of you?"
Xia Lan was taken aback and asked.
"Yes, but I don't like having outsiders around, so I asked them all to leave."
Old Du had long been used to being alone and rejected anyone getting close, except for Xia Lan and Qin Yu, of course.
Xia Lan nodded, picked up a few shrimp with her chopsticks, peeled them, and placed them in front of Old Du.
“You were severely depleted in your early years. This stuff is high in protein, you really should eat more of it! To nourish your body.” Xia Lan said to Old Du, then picked up a few more, peeled one, and put it to Qin Yu’s mouth.
"ah!"
Qin Yu paused, glanced at Xia Lan, smiled, and opened his mouth to accept her feeding.
"Delicious!" Xia Lan peeled a few for Qin Yu, fed him, and then tasted her hands, which were stained with soup, and squinted her eyes happily.
Qin Yu peeled the shell for Xia Lan as well, and fed her the same way she had just fed him.
"It's so delicious! It tastes even better if you don't have to peel it yourself!" Xia Lan happily accepted the food and said with a playful smile.
"Hahahaha..." Old Du laughed loudly.
Du Laozei enjoyed the meal very much.
After dinner, leaning back in his recliner and drinking the tea Xia Lan had brewed for him, Old Du felt happy again.
"This is the life I want! It's so comfortable being with you guys."
"You're feeling quite comfortable being served by us, aren't you?" Xia Lan teased.
"You've found out about all this, little girl," Old Du laughed.
"Don't I know you? Haha..." Xia Lan winked at Old Du, and the two smiled at each other.
Zhang Qiu listened to the cheerful laughter inside Du Lao's door and glanced at her mother beside her with mixed feelings.
Originally, this scene should have been her and her mother accompanying her grandfather, but now, she and her mother were outside the door, listening to her grandfather laughing and talking with people who were not related to her by blood.
"Dad!" Du Juan shouted at the door, trying to get her father to open it for her.
"It's me, Du Juan, Dad! Qiuqiu and I have come to see you! Open the door, Dad!"
"Please open the door for us, we want to go in and see my dad!"
Du Juan looked at the two men guarding the door, hoping they would let them in.
The two exchanged a glance and said indifferently.
"Mr. Du didn't tell us that we had guests visiting today. Did you make an appointment with Mr. Du in advance?"
The two were well aware of Mr. Du's dislike for them.
Even if it's Old Master Du's own daughter, they won't let anyone in casually. Every time they come, they always make Old Master Du unhappy.
This is the second time they've seen Old Du so happy.
The first time was also at Xia Lan and Qin Yu's home, on the day they went to pick up Old Du.
Since returning to the capital, neither of them had seen Old Du smile.
"I am his biological daughter, can't even I go in to see my father?"
Du Juan couldn't understand. She was Du Wenqing's biological daughter. When had she ever needed her father's permission to see his daughter?
What kind of father and daughter are they? Two outsiders are more important to her.
"Please don't make things difficult for us! We won't let anyone in without Elder Du's permission."
The two looked at Du Juan and said coldly.
"Dad! It's me, Du Juan! I've come to see you! Please open the door and let us in!" Du Juan shouted at the courtyard house with a cold face.
