Chapter 56 Renting a House

“Brother Yu is a good person.” Xia Lan nodded in agreement. She knew what Du Qiang meant by those words; she also owed Qin Yu a life.

Qin Yu had planned everything for her, paving the way for her whether she wanted to stay or not.

"Right!" Du Qiang laughed, as if he had found a kindred spirit.

“I also owe Brother Yu my life. If he hadn’t saved me from the river, I would be dead now,” Xia Lan said with a smile.

"Don't say that word." Qin Yu didn't want to hear the word "death" from Xia Lan's mouth, so he gently flicked Xia Lan's forehead as punishment.

“…Oh.” Xia Lan didn’t expect Qin Yu to flick her forehead, and she clutched her wound in pain.

She just felt like she'd been shot in the head.

"Does it hurt a lot?" Qin Yu regretted it as soon as he made the move. He turned around and glared at Du Qiang. If he hadn't been triggered by Du Qiang's habit of subconsciously flicking Xia Lan's forehead as punishment, he wouldn't have hit her.

"It doesn't hurt." Xia Lan shook her head quickly when she saw Qin Yu's self-blame.

Qin Yu, with a stern face, pulled away Xia Lan's hand that was covering her wound. Seeing that the spot where she had been flicked was bright red, Qin Yu pursed his lips.

"I'll go see if I can find any rapeseed oil for you."

Du Qiang leaned over to take a look. Xia Lan's forehead was a little red, but it shouldn't be to the point where she needed rapeseed oil, right?

Love really does corrupt people.

"Brother Yu, he's very good to me," Xia Lan said with a light smile as she looked at Du Qiang.

“You’re the first person he’s ever worried about so much,” Du Qiang said earnestly to Xia Lan.

"Sister-in-law, my brother is a good man," Du Qiang emphasized repeatedly.

Xia Lan looked at Du Qiang. "I won't hurt him."

They both understood what the other meant.

Du Qiang asked Xia Lan, his eyes fixed on her reaction, "Have you seen the scars on my brother's body?"

"I've seen it." Xia Lan nodded, and was about to speak when...

"She not only looked at it, she touched it."

Qin Yu returned, his fingers still damp with rapeseed oil. He came to Xia Lan and gently rubbed her forehead.

Du Qiang looked at Qin Yu, who patted Xia Lan's head and looked at Du Qiang with a determined gaze.

"Alright, it's all over now. Just one more dish will do." Qin Yu rubbed it for a while, and seeing that the redness and swelling had subsided, he returned to the kitchen and cooked the remaining dish.

Du Qiang suddenly felt a soreness in his teeth.

I never imagined my older brother would be like this...

Qin Yu personally cooked the dishes, but after Xia Lan finished eating, Qin Yu barely ate any himself; the rest ended up in Du Qiang's stomach.

This is Du Qiang's last act of defiance, a man who is not afraid of death.

"By the way, brother, did that guy surnamed Liu arrange a job for you?" Du Qiang patted his stomach contentedly; this was the most comfortable meal he had eaten in seven days.

"Yes, ticket inspector," Qin Yu said.

"Should we change it?" Du Qiang asked directly.

"Let's leave it at that for now!" Qin Yu said indifferently.

"By the way, big brother, where have you and your sister-in-law been staying these past few days?" Du Qiang asked Qin Yu. He had thought he would stay at his house, but it turned out that he had only cooked some meals at home and hadn't slept there at all.

“They lent me a small room at the department store,” Xia Lan explained.

"Your older brother and I are looking for a place to rent nearby. The place is close by, but it's a bit too small."

"Brother, why don't you and your wife just stay at my place? I can stay at my workplace." Du Qiang frowned as he looked at Qin Yu.

"I knew you would say that, so I didn't want you to know." Qin Yu glanced at Du Qiang. He knew that Du Qiang would definitely give up the house to him if he knew, so he didn't want Du Qiang to know.

"Are you being so formal with your brother?" Qin Yu's answer displeased Du Qiang. "We're all brothers. Look at me, I'm living in such a big house by myself. It's a complete waste."

“If you hadn’t said you would come back, I wouldn’t have come back to this house. It’s empty, there’s not a soul in sight,” Du Qiang sighed.

In such a big house, he only lives in one room; the other rooms are completely empty.

But he is the bureau chief, and even if he is alone, he will not be wronged.

Qin Yu looked at Xia Lan, who shook her head. "We can't stay here."

"See? Even your sister-in-law says so!" Qin Yu said with a smirk.

"Sister-in-law, give me a reason, why?" Du Qiang asked, frustrated.

“Look at this house, a three-bedroom apartment. It’s perfect for you and your brother to move in! Don’t worry about me, I have a single room over there, and I definitely won’t come back to stop you!” Du Qiang said earnestly to Xia Lan.

He genuinely wanted to lend them the house.

It's not just being polite.

"I'm telling you the truth, we really can't live in your house," Xia Lan said to Du Qiang with a smile.

“Sister-in-law…” Du Qiang said with dissatisfaction.

Xia Lan raised her hand to interrupt Du Qiang. "Listen to me."

"Sister-in-law, if your reasons don't convince me, then you'll have to stay." Du Qiang nodded, signaling Xia Lan to speak.

"First of all, this has a bad influence. You are the director of the Public Security Bureau, and your older brother and I are living in your house. What kind of talk is this? Not to mention that your neighbors will speculate, we ourselves should also have some self-awareness."

"Secondly, how long can we stay? One year, two years, ten years?" Xia Lan asked again. "It's not appropriate for us to stay for any length of time. No matter how close you and your elder brother are, that's a matter between you brothers."

“After we get married, your older brother and I are family, but even brothers have to keep clear accounts. Your older brother is paying you rent, will you accept it?” Xia Lan asked.

"Of course not," Du Qiang replied.

How could he possibly accept rent from his older brother? Would Du Qiang even be human?

“That’s the second problem. If you don’t accept us, we’ll feel indebted for the place we’re staying,” Xia Lan said with a smile.

"Sister-in-law, what's there to owe..." Du Qiang frowned, looking at Xia Lan's eyes, unable to continue.

"Thirdly, even though you don't have a wife yet, once you do, will you still let us live in this house? I think you should keep this house for when you get married, so you and your wife can live together properly," Xia Lan said to Du Qiang with a smile.

"I don't have a wife..." Du Qiang said, feeling frustrated.

"I'll introduce you to a suitable girl once I find one," Xia Lan said with a smile.

"Really? Sister-in-law, it's settled then! I'll leave my marriage to you!" Du Qiang exclaimed excitedly, barely suppressing a smile.

"Okay, if there are any good girls, I'll definitely keep an eye out for them for you." Xia Lan patted her chest.

Qin Yu glanced at Xia Lan and smiled calmly.

"If you refuse to live in my house, I'll help you find a place. You don't have any objections, right?" Du Qiang looked at Qin Yu, who this time did not object.

"Then I'll have to trouble you!" Seeing that Qin Yu didn't object, Xia Lan naturally wouldn't refuse anymore.

"That's why you're my sister-in-law! My brother didn't say a word, how did you understand what he meant?" Du Qiang looked at the silent interaction between the two, how could he know what his brother meant without even saying a word?
