Seeing the women rolling up their sleeves, Qin's mother knew she couldn't afford to offend them, so she snorted and turned to go home.
"Tsk, what a piece of trash." Several aunties watched her fleeing figure and spat disdainfully.
Qin Yu pulled Xia Lan toward home, but Xia Lan pulled Qin Yu to turn a corner and head toward the clinic. Shanghe Village was the only village in the vicinity with a clinic.
Fortunately, Qin Yu had taken Xia Lan there before, otherwise Xia Lan wouldn't know where it was.
"Where to?" Qin Yu asked softly, looking at the ruffled little rabbit in front of him, seeing that Xia Lan had changed her mind.
"Shut up, I'm very angry right now, don't talk to me." Xia Lan turned around and glared at Qin Yu.
Seeing the tenderness in her eyes, Qin Yu's heart softened, and he let Xia Lan lead him to the clinic.
"It's you again?"
The familiar white coat, the familiar impatient doctor—before Qin Yu could answer, Xia Lan pulled him inside.
"Take off your clothes!" Xia Lan said fiercely to Qin Yu.
Qin Yu glanced at Xia Lan, then obediently took off his shirt, revealing the scratches on his body.
Xia Lan didn't need to say anything; the doctor knew what had happened just by looking at the scratches on Qin Yu's body.
"Did you pull a fight with the village auntie? You hit her so hard..." The doctor had obviously treated many injuries like this before, and skillfully took out his tools, preparing to disinfect and apply medicine to Qin Yu.
Qin Yu shook his head, lifted Xia Lan's scratched hand, and told him to treat it first. "Apply the medicine to her first."
The doctor glanced at the wound on Xia Lan's hand.
"She'll heal on her own without any treatment..."
Under Qin Yu's gaze, the doctor beckoned to Xia Lan, and then pressed a cotton ball soaked in disinfectant onto her.
"Hiss..." Xia Lan twitched in pain. Qin Yu walked over nervously and took Xia Lan's hand, not forgetting to glare at the doctor.
You hurt her.
The doctor rolled his eyes at Qin Yu. "You're all better now."
Xia Lan's pain subsided, and she was about to let Qin Yu sit down when Qin Yu looked at the doctor with displeasure. "Will it leave a scar?"
"...No." The doctor's lips twitched. It was just a superficial wound; how could it leave a scar so easily?
However, seeing how nervous Qin Yu was, the doctor still gave him a word of advice: "Just don't get hurt again. It will be a little itchy while it's healing, so don't scratch it."
Qin Yu nodded before sitting down to let the doctor treat his injuries.
If Xia Lan hadn't insisted, he would never have come to the clinic with this injury.
If people find out, he'll be too ashamed to show his face.
He used to roll around in the mud when a bullet pierced his chest, but now that someone has scratched him a few times, he actually comes to get medicine.
The doctor applied the medicine to Qin Yu's wound, but Qin Yu remained expressionless and didn't utter a sound.
Xia Lan felt a sharp pain in her hand from the sight of the disinfectant touching her wounds.
However, seeing the scars on Qin Yu's body, it's not hard to explain why Qin Yu didn't even groan.
After treating Qin Yu's injuries, Xia Lan stepped forward and asked, "Doctor, how much does it cost?"
"Five stars will do." The doctor nodded calmly and symbolically accepted the money for the medicine.
After Qin Yu and Xia Lan left the clinic, they returned home and opened the long-unused door. A strong smell of yellow earth, along with a musty odor, hit them.
Xia Lan choked and coughed, so Qin Yu quickly pulled her out of the room. "I'll go tidy up the room; it's been too long since I've been back."
Qin Yu took all the bedding from the room to the yard to air it out.
After living in the city, Qin Yu couldn't help but glance at Xia Lan when he returned to this earthen house.
He was beginning to understand what his third and seventh uncles meant.
Having lived in a better house, why would I still want this mud house?
"Shitou, Xia Lan, where have you been these past few days?" Aunt Liu walked over carrying groceries and asked Qin Yu and Xia Lan.
"Auntie, I found a job in the county town, and I've been working there these past few days," Xia Lan said to Aunt Liu with a smile.
Aunt Liu looked at Qin Yu in astonishment. Qin Yu nodded, but did not tell Aunt Liu that he had also found a job in the city.
"Xia, how are you so capable?" Aunt Liu patted Xia Lan's hand and handed the vegetables to Qin Yu, who took them to the kitchen.
Aunt Liu immediately looked at Xia Lan seriously. "You silly girl, you didn't pay money to buy this job, did you?"
Seeing the disapproval in Aunt Liu's eyes, Xia Lan asked, puzzled, "Isn't it good?"
“You silly girl! Of course it’s not good! It’s so good for you to stay in the village. Why did you have to go to the county town? You could have built a new house in the village with your six hundred yuan. That would have been enough for you and Shitou to live happily ever after. Why did you do something so foolish…” Aunt Liu said to Xia Lan.
Xia Lan didn't think so. "Auntie, money will always run out eventually. Besides, isn't it good to have a job in the city and receive a government-subsidized food ration?"
"You silly girl, what will happen to Shitou if you go to the city? Are you going to take care of him?" Aunt Liu asked Xia Lan anxiously.
“He lives in the city with me too…” Xia Lan was about to say that they had already rented a house in the city.
Qin Yu walked over and asked Xia Lan, "What do you want to eat for lunch?"
"I'll eat whatever you make!" Xia Lan said happily when food was mentioned.
"I'll head back now, I still have chores to do at home!" Seeing Qin Yu come out, Aunt Liu didn't know what else to say and left dejectedly.
After Aunt Liu left, Qin Yu walked up to Xia Lan.
"Just give me a general idea of what happened between us in the city. If you ask me anything, just say that I ate and lived in your house."
Qin Yu patted Xia Lan's head and whispered his instructions.
