Chapter 67 The Stinking Intellectual Who Almost Died

"Stop with the tears. I'm not a man, who's going to fall for that? Everyone here is a woman. Do you think we're all stupid and can't see through your little scheme?" Xia Lan looked at Fang Yiyi's hurt and aggrieved expression.

She'd seen faces like that many times before.

"I didn't," Fang Yiyi said, glaring at Xia Lan with a wronged expression.

"I……"

Just as they were about to explain, the bell rang, signaling the start of work for the afternoon. Everyone hurriedly ran to the fields; it was time for them to get to work.

"Time to get to work!"

"Yiyi, let's hurry! It's time to go to work!"

"Hurry up, let's get to work!"

Fang Yiyi was also going to work, and Hu Li pulled her away.

Xia Lan smiled smugly at Fang Yiyi and waved playfully.

"Fang Zhiqing, it's time for you to go to work!"

Fang Yiyi gritted her teeth and stormed off.

Xia Lan strolled leisurely through the village, while everyone else went to work. Xu Fulin was assigning tasks to them.

Wandering aimlessly, Xia Lan had no idea where she was. Just as she was about to turn back, a muffled groan came from behind her. Xia Lan paused. The sound carried suppressed pain. After thinking for a moment, Xia Lan decided to follow the sound.

The sound came out intermittently, and Xia Lan slowly found a very remote house. It was called a house, but it was drafty from all sides and even more ridiculous than Qin Yu's mud house. Half of it had been cut off.

Xia Lan followed the sound of the pain and found an elderly man with white hair lying in the dilapidated house. The man was only wearing a thin garment, which was not enough to keep him warm.

Xia Lan walked over and heard the old man's cry of pain. He hadn't even noticed her approaching, and his whole body was trembling. Xia Lan noticed the unusual flush on his face and touched it.

The temperature was scalding hot; the old man was running a high fever, at least 38 degrees Celsius.

The person was already delirious with fever.

"Are you alright?" Xia Lan shook the old man, but he didn't react at all, only trembling and crying out in pain.

Seeing that the man's condition was getting worse, Xia Lan quickly ran back the way she came, wanting to find Qin Yu.

Just as she reached the intersection, she ran into Qin Yu, who had come looking for her. Xia Lan grabbed Qin Yu and ran towards the dilapidated house.

"What's wrong?" Qin Yu looked at Xia Lan's anxious appearance and thought something had happened, but Xia Lan didn't seem to be injured.

Xia Lan pulled Qin Yu to the old man's side. Qin Yu looked at Xia Lan in surprise, and Xia Lan directly grabbed his hand and placed it on the old man's forehead.

"Brother Yu, he has a high fever, what should we do?"

"Do you know who he is?" Qin Yu asked earnestly, taking Xia Lan's hand in his.

“I don’t know him, but seeing him living in such a dilapidated place, what did he do wrong?” Xia Lan asked Qin Yu.

"He's burning up like this, we can't just leave him to die, can we?"

“He was sent down to the countryside,” Qin Yu explained to Xia Lan. “I heard he was a university professor who was reported by his own students, criticized, and then sent here. The higher-ups ordered that we not save him, not to treat him well, and to call people like him ‘stinking intellectuals.’”

“No matter who he is, he’s at least a human being, right?” Xia Lan frowned. “He hasn’t done anything immoral or heinous; he’s just a gentleman.”

"Since we've encountered this, we can't just stand by and watch someone die. It's a human life, after all!" Xia Lan wanted to save him, and Qin Yu's eyes softened when he heard her words.

"Go ahead and try to save him if you want. Go to the clinic and buy some fever reducers, but don't let anyone know you're buying them for him," Qin Yu said, rubbing Xia Lan's head.

"Remember, don't tell anyone."

"He needs to eat. I'll go home and cook some porridge for him," Qin Yu said to Xia Lan, gazing at the old man's head.

Xia Lan nodded and then ran out. After Xia Lan had gone for a while, Qin Yu slowly called out Xia Lan's name all around.

"Wife~" Qin Yu called out Xia Lan's name as he walked home.

Fang Yiyi, who was in the field, saw Qin Yu alone. Her eyes lit up, and she dropped what she was holding, saying she was going to the toilet, and sneaked away.

"Brother Qin Yu~" Fang Yiyi caught up with Qin Yu breathlessly. Qin Yu raised an eyebrow and looked at Fang Yiyi.

"Who?" Qin Yu asked, looking puzzled.

"I'm Fang Yiyi, you saved me before!" Fang Yiyi said, somewhat hurt. "It was when I first went to the countryside, my legs got stuck in the mud while I was working in the fields, and you pulled me out."

A look of indifference flashed in Qin Yu's eyes; he couldn't remember anything at all.

"Brother Qin Yu, why did you marry Xia Lan? Did she force you?" Looking at Qin Yu's handsome face after he shaved his beard, Fang Yiyi became increasingly fascinated and asked Qin Yu with a hint of grievance.

"Everyone said we were a perfect match, but you married her instead..."

"Where do you get the confidence to compare to my wife?" Qin Yu found Fang Yiyi's words laughable. "Who said we're a good match? Call him over here and I'll ask him."

"Everyone says so!" Fang Yiyi stepped forward with a sad expression, trying to grab Qin Yu's clothes, as if Qin Yu were some kind of heartless man.

Qin Yu had virtually no memory of Fang Yiyi, and upon seeing her approach, he immediately took two steps back. "People say you're a good match for Zhang Laosan, are you going to marry her?"

"Brother Qin Yu, I haven't been able to forget you since you saved me. What do I lack compared to Xia Lan? Why can't you see me?" Fang Yiyi said plaintively. She was the one who met Qin Yu first, and he even saved her. Why was Xia Lan snatched away from her?

"You saved her too, and you saved me too. We're both saviors. What she can do, I can do too." Fang Yiyi lunged at Qin Yu, but Qin Yu coldly raised his foot, causing Fang Yiyi to miss her target.
