Chapter 10 No Need to Please Anyone

After the meal, Grandma Ye smiled and took out osmanthus sugar.

She used a knife to cut the two thumb-sized pieces into eight smaller pieces, each about the size of a little finger.

"Oh my, these are Jin'er and Huan'er's candies. You've shared them all. How generous of you!" Ye Daquan said proudly.

Grandma Ye smiled broadly: "Our children have suffered, so we old men won't eat. Yong'er, Xuan'er, Peng'er, Jinhua and Yinhua, you eat."

Ye Yong was nineteen years old, a quiet and honest young man. He waved his hand and said, "I don't like to eat it. You guys eat it. I'll chop the firewood while the moonlight is still bright."

He then went out of the house.

Ye Jinhua pouted and said, "I'm not eating either! Let's go back to the house first."

These candies were originally bought with money borrowed by her father, but he only gave them to Ye Jin'er and her sister. Now he's pretending to share them.

Using the Ye family's money to act generous, what a shameless thing to do!

"You brat, what kind of attitude is that!" Ye Daquan was annoyed and was about to lose his temper.

Ye Caiping quickly said, "Brother, stop arguing. If you don't like it, then don't eat it. Why force the child to do something?"

"Can……"

"Alright, I'll listen to your little sister," said Old Man Ye.

Although Ye Daquan was unwilling, he had no choice but to back down after his younger sister and father had spoken.

"So sweet." Ye Peng from the second branch stepped forward, took one and put it in his mouth. "You can have the honeysuckle."

He placed the candy in Ye Yinhua's hand.

Ye Yinhua, the youngest at only eleven years old, finally got to eat the candy she had been longing for, and grinned from ear to ear.

Ye Peng then placed the candy in Ye Jin'er and Ye Huan'er's hands and said gently, "Cousins, you should try some too."

"Mm." Ye Jin'er nodded gratefully, noticing Ye Peng's slightly reddened eyes.

The second branch of the Ye family has always treated them the best, not just now, but in the past as well. The first branch, apart from their eldest uncle, doesn't like them.

Ye Daquan, Ye Erquan, and Wei Shi ate the remaining candy, and Ye Peng took the last one.

After everyone had returned to their rooms, Ye Peng took the candy, pulled Ye Yinhua along, and led her to the sisters' room.

Ye Jinhua was sitting on the edge of the bed sewing shoe soles.

"Here you go!" Ye Peng placed the candy on the dresser and said cheerfully, "Alright, little sister, what's past is past, your aunt has changed. Don't be angry anymore."

"Don't be angry, sister," Ye Yinhua also advised.

Ye Jinhua's face darkened, and with a loud slap, she slammed the sole of her shoe onto the dresser.

"She squeezed all our money dry, caused my eldest brother to be unable to get married at nineteen, and made my second brother drop out of school! She even made my mother go back to her parents' home in anger! You are so forgiving! So magnanimous! It's only because she didn't harm your second branch of the family!"

Ye Peng was stunned for a moment before his face darkened and he said, "Yes, yes, we're all bad guys, okay?"

After saying that, he turned and left, followed by Ye Jinhua's cursing voice:

"Hmph, it's easy for you to talk when you're not the one suffering! Why should I forgive this person and that person? Stop meddling in other people's business!"

Ye Peng left, leaving Ye Yinhua standing there looking embarrassed.

To ease the awkwardness, Ye Yinhua had no choice but to tidy up her bed.

...

Ye Caiping took her two daughters back to their room.

After closing the door, Ye Caiping sat on the bed and said:

"You don't need to curry favor with anyone. Let the eldest son's family be prejudiced against us. Just do your job well, don't cause trouble, and that's enough. I will pay back what I owe the Ye family."

Ye Jin'er and Ye Huan'er were stunned, their eyes reddening.

“But…we have to live here,” Ye Jin’er said. “Grandpa said that even after Mother gets married, we will still stay here.”

"I won't remarry in three months," Ye Caiping sighed. "But I will take you all out of here."

"Move out?" The two sisters were taken aback.

“Yes. I already talked to your aunt yesterday. Within three months, you either get married or return the thirty taels to her. That way, she can't interfere with me anymore. Then I'll take you out and we won't have to live under someone else's roof anymore.”

The two sisters' eyes lit up.

Although they changed their names, they were still from their maternal grandparents' family, and their maternal aunt, cousins, and other relatives didn't like them.

No matter how much your uncles dote on you, you're still living under someone else's roof.

When their mother remarries, their situation will become even more difficult.

Hearing Ye Caiping say this, both sisters felt a lump in their throats, and their restless hearts finally calmed down.

"Mother!" The two sisters rushed into Ye Caiping's arms at the same time.

Ye Caiping was knocked backward by their bumping.

She was a time traveler, and she didn't really have any feelings for them. Her raising them was just out of a sense of responsibility.

But now, as she was hugged like this, Ye Caiping felt a warmth in her heart, and the corners of her lips involuntarily curved up slightly.

Well, this feeling isn't bad.

"But... how can Mother earn thirty taels?" Ye Jin'er looked up.

"Don't worry, I have plenty of ways," Ye Caiping said with a smile. "Just remember, you don't need to please anyone, but you also can't cause trouble. Just do your job and treat people sincerely."

"After we move out, if we get along well with these people, we'll continue to be relatives; if not, we'll become strangers. It's that simple."

"Um."

The two sisters nodded deeply, and for some reason, they had complete faith in their mother.

Their mother had never given them this feeling before. Whenever something happened, she would only scold them as worthless girls who were disliked by others, all because they hadn't been raised.

Although their mother was divorced and became somewhat strange after the shock, this change made them feel safe.
