Ye Hufen and the others waited at the place where the oxcart was parked.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Ye Caiping return with a box of pastries.
The group rode in an oxcart, slowly making their way back.
"Auntie is amazing," Yang Xiaoyan praised again. "If... Mom could have chased them away like you did, we wouldn't have had to trouble you."
Ye Hufen was taken aback and felt very guilty.
...
I'm home.
Ye Hufen entered her room and was stunned.
Uncle Ye and Ye Si were both in their room, looking worried.
Aunt Ye sat on the bed, wiping away tears.
"What...what's wrong? Mother, why are you crying?" Ye Hufen asked in surprise, her heart filled with unease.
"Just now..." Aunt Ye looked up, and there was a handprint on her face. "I just tried to persuade Guangzong to break up with that widow, and he hit me..."
"How do you know he and that widow..." Ye Hufeng paused as she spoke. It was so obvious, how could her parents not see it?
No, that's not the point right now!
Ye Hufeng was shocked: "He even hit Mother? Impossible! Father, Siquan, are you just going to watch Mother get beaten by him?"
Ye Siquan sighed, "We couldn't stop her in time... By the time we realized what was happening, Mother had already fallen to the ground. We could only help her back to her room."
"What?" Ye Hufen was furious. "As the pillar of the family, is all you can do is help your mother back to her room? You should at least fight back!"
Ye Siquan said, "Well..."
"Why are you hitting me?" Aunt Ye said helplessly. "What will you do if you cause trouble? When we get back, won't all the beatings fall on you and Xiao Yan?"
Uncle Ye sighed and nodded.
Ye Siquan also appeared cowardly.
Ye Hufen trembled. It was all for her!
If she could stand up on her own...
If she could...
Meanwhile, outside the door—
Ye Caiping walked through the courtyard carrying the snacks she had just bought in town.
Yang Duobao was sitting on the ground playing with mud when he suddenly saw the snacks in Ye Caiping's hand and jumped up:
"Hey, stop right there! What's that in your hand? Give it to me!"
Ye Caiping gave a cold laugh: "Want some? Come here!"
Yang Duobao walked over, but unexpectedly, Ye Caiping kicked him directly.
"Ouch—" Yang Duobao was kicked and flew two meters away, rolling to the ground.
He sat up, looking completely bewildered, and then burst into a series of deafening sobs:
"Awooo! Murder! The Black Bear Demon's sister is killing someone! Waaaaah!"
"Duobao!" Yang Guangzong suddenly rushed out of the room.
Yang Hufen and Aunt Ye, who were talking in the room, were also startled and ran over.
"What happened? What happened?" Yang Guangzong asked, pulling Yang Duobao along.
Yang Duobao, however, was like a limp rag, refusing to get up no matter how much they pulled him, and even rolled around on the ground: "She hit me! She kicked me! Waaah..."
“How could that be? Caiping wouldn’t hit anyone.” Old Mrs. Ye walked in from outside the door, with Ye Sanquan following behind.
"She's the one who hit me! She kicked me... Waaaaah... It hurts so much!"
Yang Guangzong frowned and stared at Ye Caiping: "Little sister, how could you hit someone? He's still a child!"
"I hit him?" Ye Caiping looked puzzled. "I still don't understand what happened! Everything happened so fast!"
"I was walking by carrying this box of pastries when he suddenly pointed at me and said he wanted to eat it."
"But this box of pastries is very expensive, it costs three hundred coins! A friend asked me to buy it for him. How can I give it to him?"
"As soon as I refused, he sat down on the ground, yelled, and started throwing a tantrum! He even accused me of hitting him." His voice was full of grievance as he finished speaking.
Yang Guangzong stared wide-eyed; he believed it!
Because that's Yang Duobao's style; he's capable of doing this!
Yang Guangzong had already figured it out in his mind. It must be that Duobao was greedy and deliberately framed his sister-in-law because she wouldn't give him any.
But they cannot admit this mistake! They said, filled with shame and anger:
"You, you... how old is Duobao? Children don't lie! You must have hit him!"
"Hmph, brother-in-law, how can you make false accusations! It's one thing for Duobao to be ignorant, but don't you understand either?" Ye Caiping gritted her teeth, looking furious.
“Caiping, forget it…” Aunt Ye stepped forward, looking timid: “How can we say that Duobao calls Hufen ‘mother’?”
"Yes, little sister, for Hu Fen's sake..." Uncle Ye sighed.
"Brother-in-law, my sister didn't do it on purpose," Ye Sanquan said, apologizing on Ye Caiping's behalf.
"Third Brother... Hmph! Fine, fine, I'll take your fear."
Seeing his father-in-law's family so weak and easily bullied, Yang Guangzong's previous sophistry immediately turned into righteous indignation:
"You think you can just let it go like that? Look at my Duobao, you've knocked him to the ground. You owe me an explanation!"
"Son-in-law... I'm so sorry about this. What do you want to do? How about we take Duobao to see a doctor?" Aunt Ye said humbly.
Seeing the Ye family's forbearance, Yang Guangzong became even more demanding: "Of course we have to see a doctor. But if we see a doctor, will my Duobao stop hurting? Wouldn't he be suffering for nothing?"
"Then what do you want?" Ye Caiping asked.
Yang Guangzong's eyes darted around: "I didn't mean anything by it. It's just... you have to make it up to me with a job. Like I told you last time, I'll deliver goods for you, thirty copper coins a day."
Ye Hufen was so angry that her face turned pale when she heard him still saying this.
“Okay, anything else?” Ye Caiping asked.
