After the living room in Madam Lin's courtyard was smashed to pieces, the Marquis of Dingguo waved his hand and said, "Let's go!"
Then he swaggered away with a few guards.
"Shen Zhiqiong—you rude brute! You rogue—" Old Madam Lin clutched her chest and fell straight down.
When the Marquis of Dingguo went mad, the maids and servants who had been hiding in the corner rushed over to support her.
Old Madam Lin was so shocked and furious that her hands trembled: "Go and inform the old master! How dare they take our Lin family for granted! Go now, go now—"
Lin Yaxian, her face pale and her eyes filled with tears, helped Old Madam Lin leave and went to Lin Yaxian's room to rest.
But they couldn't wait for Prime Minister Lin to return home.
The constable arrived, and he knelt outside the house, looking troubled, and said, "Madam Lin, the Marquis's Mansion has sent a group of suspects who tried to disrupt and offend Master Shen's wedding yesterday. The suspects said they were bribed by Madam Lin. Please come with us, Madam Lin."
Madam Lin's face darkened further: "How dare you! Who do you think you are? Prefect Song is only a third-rank official, yet you dare to offend our Lin family! My patriarch is a first-rank Grand Secretary!"
The constable turned pale: "Please forgive me, Madam... Although Chief Minister Lin is a first-rank minister, Madam Lin is a commoner and has not received any official title."
"Her behavior yesterday was offensive to a lady of the third rank."
Upon hearing that she had "offended" Ye Caiping, Lin Yaxian's eyes immediately turned bloodshot, and she abruptly threw back the curtain and rushed out:
"Who does she think she is! Just a lowly peasant woman..."
The constable: "..."
Lin Yaxian said coldly, "Fine, fine, she said I bribed someone to offend her. Did I offend her? Who said that?"
The constable said, "Yes, it was those people who were carrying out the funeral procession. The leader, Liu Daniu, was crying his eyes out, saying that a girl had given him one hundred taels of silver to have the funeral procession start early. He even used the coffin to ram the bridal sedan chair. The magistrate said that Madam Lin is the most suspicious person, so he invited her to the yamen just to ask her a few questions."
Lin Yaxian: "He can forget about it!"
The constable shrank back and stammered, "Madam Lin... please don't make things difficult for me. I'm just doing my duty. If Madam Lin is unavailable, she must send a maid."
Madam Lin came out: "You insolent wretch! Don't even mention a maid, you can't take even one of our dogs with you! When my master returns, see how he skins you alive! Guards, throw him out!"
The constables were thus kicked out of the house.
The number of guards and servants at the gate has doubled, and it has been declared that no one other than family members is allowed to enter.
At noon, Prime Minister Lin finally returned and stormed straight to Lin Yaxian's room.
As soon as Madam Lin saw him, she complained, "That Shen Zhiqiong is a mad dog! He falsely accused our Yaxian of bribing people to disrupt their wedding, and he even smashed up my courtyard."
Prime Minister Lin, however, asked with a grim face, "Did she do it?"
He stared coldly at Lin Yaxian and said, "Tell me, did you do it?"
Lin Yaxian's face turned pale: "Father..."
Before she could finish speaking, with a "slap," Prime Minister Lin actually slapped her across the face.
Lin Yaxian was stunned for a moment, and finally turned pale with fright, not daring to utter a sound.
The old father never lays a hand on her, but now he's actually hitting her, which shows how angry he is.
Prime Minister Lin pressed on, "I'll ask you one more time, did you do it?"
Lin Yaxian bit her lip tightly: "..."
"Grandpa, you've gone mad!" Old Madam Lin grabbed him, angrily saying, "So what if she did it? Xian'er was just angry for a moment, and in the end, she didn't actually clash with anyone, did she?"
"Something that never happened at all, yet the Shen family came to our house to cause trouble and act crazy. Do they have any respect for the Lin family? Do they have any respect for you, sir?"
"After going crazy, he even went to the government office to cause trouble. What does he want? Does he want to send Xian'er to court? He really doesn't give you any face at all."
"Shut up! Like father, like son!" Prime Minister Lin stared intently at Madam Lin. "If it weren't for you, how could she and Ya Ting have developed such selfish and vicious personalities?"
Madam Lin's face darkened: "Lin Zhongwen, if it weren't for the support of my family back then, would you have been able to get to where you are today! And now you dare to yell at me!"
The Prime Minister Lin was furious: "Then in all these decades, in what way have I wronged you? In what way have I failed to please you?"
Madam Lin choked up; Prime Minister Lin had indeed done nothing wrong to her.
Even though he had several concubines, he always put her first in everything. Even though he had a son born out of wedlock, he separated from the family early on, and all the family property belonged to her legitimate son.
Prime Minister Lin shook his head, turned and left with a gloomy face.
......
After leaving, Chief Minister Lin went to the residence of the Marquis of Dingguo to apologize to the Marquis and Madam Shen.
Let the Marquis of Dingguo give him some face and not let things escalate to the point of being so ugly in court.
Madam Shen, however, said with a stern face, "Over the years, she has been making trouble, scaring Manbao so much that she doesn't even dare to return to the capital. We've tolerated her for so many years, haven't we already given you enough face, Elder Lin?"
"And then there was the time when Caiping first came to the capital, when she hired people to slander Caiping, and the incident at the Plum Blossom Banquet. One thing after another, haven't we given you face in every way?"
"This matter is absolutely not going to be settled today!"
When Prime Minister Lin heard her say all this, he felt ashamed and had no face to ask for peace anymore.
After returning home, it was impossible to actually send Lin Yaxian to court. Instead, Lin Yaxian's maid, Shangxue, was sent there instead.
Shang Xue took the blame, saying that no one instructed her; it was she who couldn't stand seeing Shen Zhiyan marry a new bride and took it upon herself to bribe the funeral procession to disrupt the wedding.
