In the autumn of the Dawu Dynasty in Yunzhou.
The sun had just risen, and along the riverbank outside Xiaoshi Village, several people were frantically searching for something in the water.
"Oh dear, we've finally been rescued!" a strange female voice exclaimed in surprise.
"Quick, pull those next to you out." This was a gruff-voiced man.
As they spoke, several hands reached out and pulled the soaking wet Song Liyun ashore.
Song Liyun lay half-reclined on the withered grass, panting heavily.
That was so close!
She spent the entire day running around the city ruins searching for all kinds of supplies.
Exhausted, hungry, and mentally drained, they finally found a refuge that others had abandoned.
Unexpectedly, there was a swarm of mutated rats inside, and they were attacked as soon as they opened the door.
In the face of danger, her companions fled first. There were too many rats, and she could not escape even after fighting desperately. In despair, she could only jump into the river, hoping not to die too badly.
It seems that she was rescued.
The lingering fear of escaping death made her heart pound like a drum, and before she could even utter a word of gratitude, she was stunned by what she saw before her.
Around her were seven or eight men and women dressed in coarse cloth with diagonal lapels, much like the ancient farmers recorded in the original documents before the Great Cataclysm of the Epoch.
At this moment, everyone's face was filled with curiosity and sympathy.
"Hey! Young lady, where are you from? How did you fall into the river?" the middle-aged man holding a wooden stick asked loudly.
He had just gone to the field to check on the crops when he saw a girl walking towards the river with her head down.
The river was very deep over there. He shouted several times not to go over, but the girl seemed not to hear him.
When he arrived at the scene, he found that the girl had fallen into the river, and then he called on the people working in the fields nearby to come and rescue her.
“Yes, this girl looks unfamiliar. She doesn’t seem to be from our Xiaoshi Village. Could she be visiting relatives and not knowing the way, so she ended up at Laoyadang at the edge of the village?” Someone came forward to carefully examine Song Liyun’s face.
Another woman rushed in from behind the crowd. As soon as she saw Song Liyun, she shouted, "Girl, whose family are you? Why are you here by the water? Do you know that the water here is deep and people have drowned here before?"
The woman's voice was stern, yet it contained deep concern.
Song Liyun looked up and saw that the woman looked to be in her forties or fifties, with her hair styled in a round bun and adorned with a silver hairpin.
She squatted down and quickly wrung out the water from Song Liyun's clothes, then took off her own apron and draped it over Song Liyun's shoulders to cover the embarrassing wet clothes clinging to her body.
Seeing that Song Liyun remained silent, the woman softened her tone and continued, "Girl! It's not that I'm criticizing you, but these are rare peaceful days, so you should cherish them. As long as you're alive, you can overcome anything, no matter how big the problem is."
“My surname is Huang, and my husband is the village head of Xiaoshi Village. If you have any trouble, just tell me, and I will help you.”
A woman nearby helped her wring the water out of her hair and comforted her, saying, "Yes, girl, just tell me what's wrong. The village head's wife will support you. The people of Xiaoshi Village are very reasonable. We help each other with any difficulties. No one in our village has ever died."
The others were also chattering amongst themselves, asking for information, and people from the village were gradually heading this way.
Song Liyun's eyes flickered as she listened to the women's questions.
She looked at "her own" arms, which were thin and weak, not the strong muscles she had developed after using biological agents.
And the clothes she was wearing—long sleeves, a slanted placket, a light red long skirt—were the same style as the "ancient people" around her.
I looked up and around.
Although this place appears to be outside the base's moat, there are no waist-high, jagged weeds, no wild beasts baring their claws and fangs, and no gray, lifeless sky.
A gentle breeze blows, the sun shines brightly, the water ripples softly, and in the distance, neat fields and houses stand.
These are all beautiful scenes that existed before the Cataclysmic Era.
Could it be that I have already left that disaster planet and returned to ancient times before the dawn of an era?
Looking at the bright sunlight and feeling the care and concern of those around her, Song Liyun's heart warmed instantly.
Having survived ten years of apocalypse, she was willing to accept even a dream or the underworld at this moment.
She just didn't know the surrounding situation, so she needed to observe for the time being.
More and more people gathered around, speculating about who Song Liyun, who had fallen into the water, was and why she wasn't speaking.
Just then, an old woman screamed and rushed into the crowd, slapping Song Liyun across the face: "You shameless slut, you little whore, now you've got the guts to run around outside and even threaten to kill yourself to scare people."
"Believe it or not, if you run away, I'll kill those two beasts in my house."
Although Song Liyun was being supported by the village head's wife, she was startled by the woman's scream. When she looked up, she saw a withered claw swinging towards her cheek.
Before the village head's wife could even speak to stop her, Song Liyun's sense of danger prompted her to react, and she kicked out with her foot.
She had just been rescued from the water, her body was limp, and she was sitting on the ground when the kick landed directly on the old woman's stomach.
Not enough force was used; as the old woman lunged forward, she was kicked over, and at the same time, the old woman fell backward onto her back.
The incident happened so suddenly that the village head's wife and the woman nearby exclaimed in surprise and quickly helped her up, asking, "Young lady, are you alright?"
On the other side, because it was by the river, the ground was uneven, and with withered grass, broken stems, and gravel, the old woman was kicked by Song Liyun and immediately lost her balance, staggered a few steps and fell to the ground.
Like a startled chick, its originally sharp cry suddenly rose eight octaves in volume, piercing one's eardrums.
"Ouch! Ouch! Someone's fallen and died!"
