Chapter 61 Drinking Causes Trouble

Seeing Xu Yan'er's pathetic state, Granny Cui couldn't help but scold, "You chose this man yourself, so don't go back to your parents' home crying later."

Xu Yan'er burst into tears: "Mother, don't tell my sister-in-law, she'll scold you again."

If I get married like this, I'll definitely never be able to go back to my parents' home.

My sister-in-law has a sharp tongue; she can curse people for three days straight without repeating herself. If she found out that she got married and her family didn't get any benefits, she would definitely say some nasty things.

The thought of her daughter getting married without a dowry and in such a desolate state filled Granny Cui with heartache, and the mother and daughter immediately embraced and wept bitterly.

Inside, there was crying and talking, while outside, the banquet was nearing its end, and everyone reeked of alcohol.

One of the soldiers in Xue Zhuang's unit, speaking with a thick tongue, said, "Brother Xue is truly a role model for his brothers. He won over the bride in no time."

Although he's no longer in the military, he'll have a wife and children and a warm bed, which his brothers greatly envy.

Although Xue Zhuang lost his military post and was beaten, he kept his life, had a house and land, and even got a wife for free. He was happiest today.

When someone offers a toast, he naturally accepts it without hesitation, his face flushed from the drink.

Hearing his brothers' envy of him, he smiled and said, "Hey! Old Fang, we brothers said we'd share the good times. From now on, I'll live in town, and I'll get you any girl you fancy in this Broken Gold Town."

A burst of laughter immediately erupted at the table.

Old Fang, also drunk, immediately exclaimed, "The one Brother Xue left over, isn't that Miss Song? Although she's not as fair-skinned as your wife, she's still quite pretty."

"No problem, I'll go get him for you. He's someone I don't like..."

"Bang!"

Before he could finish speaking, a bowl was smashed on the table in front of him, splashing soup everywhere and startling the people serving the drinks.

At the table next to him, Song Zhenping stood up, his eyes red, and pointed at the soldiers who were talking nonsense, shouting, "My sister will not marry you... um!" His mouth was covered.

The room fell silent as the soldiers noticed that the woman they had mentioned, Song's, brother was present.

It's no wonder the girl was angry after being talked about like that.

Having his wedding table smashed in front of him, Xue Zhuang was embarrassed. Even though he had been in the wrong, he refused to admit it and said with a stern face, "Song Zhenping, everyone was drinking and having fun. You took a few drunken jokes seriously and even smashed my bowl. Isn't that going too far?"

Song Dekui covered Song Zhenping's mouth and gave a forced laugh, saying, "Today is Brother Xue's big day, so we shouldn't be so rude. But shouldn't you gentlemen also watch your words, lest you have to have your tongues cut out in the underworld after you die?"

Enraged that someone had cursed him to death, Xue Zhuang was furious.

He was also drunk, and he pointed at Song Dekui and yelled, "What are you all? I didn't invite you to drink!"

Song Zhenping was even more furious when he saw that Uncle Kui had accompanied him to the banquet and was being scolded.

He may seem weak and easily bullied, but he has a strong sense of justice, especially when his loved ones are wronged.

Song Zhenping quickly pried Kui Shu's hand off his mouth and spat at Xue Zhuang: "Pah, do you think we wanted to come?"

Your mother-in-law said you invited me to a banquet, and that since we'll both be military households in the future, I'd be disrespectful if I didn't come.

He also said that everyone else gave one or two hundred coins, and that I should give one or two taels of silver, otherwise he would be disrespectful to me.

Listen carefully, I'm here to eat at your banquet out of respect.

I've come to check if the rice that costs one tael of silver contains dragon meat.

"Look at this! If it weren't for this acorn tofu to fill the table, would a few bowls of bland taro soup even be worth a tael of silver?"

When honest people get angry, they always confront each other directly.

Yeah! They can't change their minds either.

Song Dekui had never seen Song Zhenping nearly strangle Gu Pozi in Xiaoshi Village. At this moment, his eyes were so wide they almost popped out of their sockets: "It's true that you've seen him for a day and he's become so bold. When did Daping become so daring?"

Xue Zhuang was so angry his face twitched: "Coming to the banquet was a favor to me, how come I didn't even know?"

He wanted to come forward and drive the person away, but he had been beaten with a stick a few days ago, and his buttocks were in excruciating pain. He could barely walk or sit, and he couldn't get into a fight.

Fortunately, other soldiers were there and pushed and shoved the Song uncle and nephew out of the house.

The situation was getting out of control, and Xue Zhuang could only grit his teeth and explain to the others that he had never mentioned the gift money.

He didn't say it, but Song Zhenping mentioned Granny Cui's name.

It doesn't matter who says it's the same for a family.

The people inside looked at each other in dismay: Good heavens, a gift of one or two taels of silver, even a hundred or two coins, they couldn't afford it!

This is an expensive meal; if we sit down any longer, it's hard to say whether we'll be able to leave.

Seeing that things were not going well, someone immediately took out twenty coins, placed them beside his seat, bowed, and quietly left.

Others followed suit. Aunt Guo and a few others couldn't sit still. They had come to help with the cooking and get a free meal, not to give gifts, so they immediately got up from their seats.

Xue Zhuang kept one person and let another go, and the lively room was soon deserted, with only a few soldiers from the garrison still keeping the scene intact.

Seeing the once joyous wedding banquet turn into such an awkward situation, Xue Zhuang wanted to confront Song Zhenping.

When I turned around, I realized that Song Zhenping and Song Dekui had already left.

I can't drink anymore.

The talkative and troublesome soldier surnamed Fang offered eighty coins as a gift, which made Xue Zhuang blush again, and he quickly refused.

The army's pay was always in arrears. Ordinary soldiers only received twenty coins a month. He had to rely on his brothers to chip in money to buy things for Xu Yan'er.

The banquet was just meant to be a lively affair, but now Song Zhenping is saying that coming to dinner requires a high dowry, leaving everyone in an awkward position.

After seeing the guests off, Xue Zhuang was both ashamed and angry, and entered the bridal chamber with a sullen face.

He wanted to find out if Granny Cui had actually said those words.
