Chapter 5 This Life Is Unbearable
There is no rush to curry favor with others.
Chunxi was so tired that she quickly washed up and went to bed.
It was not until the next day that he told Wang and his elder sister-in-law about the outing.
The eldest sister-in-law was timid. When she heard that Wei Lingze had stabbed Ye Er with a sword, she quickly covered her chest and said, "The eldest young master is too angry. It has been really hard for my sister to stay in the Wei family for the past three years."
"The eldest young master is also worried that someone will sow discord and ruin their marriage," Wang retorted, looking at Chunxi reproachfully, "and you too, why are you running around instead of staying home? What if the eldest young master misunderstands you as a traitor?"
Although Chunxi said that the young master of the Ye family forced her to go with him, in Wang's eyes, it was wrong for her to go out.
Moreover, she said in front of Wei Lingze that she wanted to get married. Isn't this cutting off her own retreat?
Wang strongly disapproved of Chunxi's approach.
Chunxi didn't explain, but simply said, "The misunderstanding has already occurred. I don't know how much trouble it will cause in the future. Mother, it's better for you to marry me off as soon as possible."
Chunxi mentioned getting married again, and Wang was a little shaken.
Chunxi is about to turn nineteen. Before, she seldom came back to the Wei family, and the neighbors didn’t say anything. But now that she has been restored to a good family, if they don’t find a husband for her, people will say that their family is a blood-sucking parasite on their daughter.
But Qian was about to give birth, and with the addition of a new member to the family, the expenses would increase, and Qian also needed to recuperate. After Chunxi got married, she could no longer contribute to the family as before, and life would have to be tight again.
More importantly, the money Chunxi brought home over the years has almost been spent. What if Chunxi asks her for a dowry?
This girl doesn't even care about her mother anymore.
Thinking of this, Wang frowned and scolded: "A girl keeps talking about getting married all the time. Isn't she afraid of being laughed at?"
Seeing that the atmosphere was getting bad, Qian quickly changed the subject and asked how Chunxi came back.
Chunxi didn't mention the encounter with a ride, but lied that he was rushing back to the city before curfew, but fainted from hunger on the way, so he didn't get home until midnight.
Qian was a simple-minded person. She comforted Chunxi with a few words and did not ask any more questions.
After lunch, Chunxi asked about the cloth and silk that the Wei family had sent earlier. Wang Shi immediately became alert: "I have put all those things away. Why are you asking this?"
Although those things were given to Chunxi by Madam Wei as rewards, once they were brought home, they belonged to the family, and Wang, as the mother, had absolute say.
Chunxi had expected Wang's defensiveness. She didn't care about the cloth. After all, she still had 1,000 taels of silver on her.
"I found a buyer who is willing to pay twice the market price for these cloths. I should be able to get nearly a thousand taels of silver."
"How can these things be worth so much?" Wang's eyes widened, and then her face was full of doubt. "You didn't get scammed, did you? How could someone be so stupid as to pay double the price for something like that?"
Why not?
People are still rushing to do it.
Ye Er only gave a verbal promise, so he had to strike while the iron was hot.
Chunxi persuaded Wang and prepared to send the cloth to the Ye family. When counting, Chunxi found that two pieces of cloth were missing.
"These things have always been in my room. How could they be missing? You must have remembered them wrongly."
"Those two pieces of cloth are one navy blue and one lake green, and both are Shu brocade. The Wei family also has records of this. Mother, do you want me to go to the government and report it so that I can remember it?"
Seeing Chunxi's adamant attitude, Wang knew she couldn't hide it anymore. She glared at Chunxi and said, "The things are in my room, and there's no one else home. If two horses are missing, it's naturally me who gave them away. Why are you shouting?"
"After Dad died, none of the relatives came to visit. Who did you give it to?"
"My mother-in-law came to see your sister-in-law yesterday with eggs. I heard that you got a lot of good things from the Wei family, so I gave her two."
After Chunxi's father died, Wang felt that she had lost her man and was inferior to others in every way. She always liked to put on a brave face. In order to marry the eldest sister-in-law, she was extorted a lot of money. Later, she often asked the eldest sister-in-law to help her parents' home to save face.
Chunxi felt disappointed when he thought that Wang Shi was not happy about him eating two more buns, but turned around and gave away the best Shu brocade for free.
Moreover, she did not return home last night, but Wang did not go to the government to report the loss, nor did she worry and lose sleep. Even if she knew the truth, she only blamed her for going out and did not care about her at all.
Wang Shi felt uncomfortable with Chunxi's cold and melancholy gaze, and she defended herself with a stern face, "You've been away from home for these years, and many things at home are thanks to your mother-in-law's help. Besides, your eldest sister-in-law is about to give birth to your eldest brother's child. We have so much cloth, it's only right to give them two pieces. When you get married, don't you miss your parents' home?"
Speaking of the latter part, Wang felt more confident.
She asked Qian to take care of her parents' home to set an example for Chunxi, so that Chunxi would find a way to get things back from her husband's family in the future.
"Mother, do you know what your daughter has been through these past three years? She hasn't had a full night's sleep in these three years. Madam Wei knows how hard she's worked, so she's given her lots of compensation. But what about you, mother? Did you ever think of her when you sent her things?"
"Of course I wasn't thinking about you. I advised you to make plans early and to follow the young master. If you had listened, you wouldn't be arguing with me today about these two pieces of cloth. Now everyone knows that you're helping people in the Wei family with their shit and piss. Who would be willing to marry you?"
Wang did not dare to admit that she did not love her daughter and put all the blame on Chunxi.
Qian was terrified when she heard this. She stepped forward and pulled Chunxi aside, saying, "Don't be angry with your mother, sister. It's all your fault. You'll go home and get those two pieces of cloth back."
Qian's grandmother was paralyzed in bed for two years before she died. Qian took care of her grandmother for a period of time. At that time, there were people in the family who shared the burden, but Qian felt overwhelmed. Chunxi took on the responsibility alone for three years and suffered a lot.
Qian's eyes were red and her face was full of heartache.
When Chunxi heard Wang's last words, all his anger disappeared and he became strangely calm.
She worked day and night for the past three years and brought almost all the money back home, but her mother didn't feel sorry for her at all and looked down on her like everyone else.
She was doing the job of taking care of people's excrement and urination in the Wei family. No good family was willing to marry her, so she had to lower herself to get into bed and shamelessly pester Wei Lingze to be his concubine.
It turned out that she was the one who was taken advantage of.
Chunxi thought it was funny and actually laughed out loud.
She didn't vent her anger on her sister-in-law, but said calmly, "There's no point in asking for something back after you've given it away. Mother is right. I'm too stingy."
Chunxi finished speaking, pulled her hand away and looked at Wang: "Now that these cloths have been delivered to our home, I will listen to you as to how you deal with them. My daughter will become an outsider sooner or later, so I won't say anything more in the future."
Wang Shi didn't have the ability to find another buyer willing to pay double the price for these cloths, but Chunxi's face was cold, as if she was an enemy. She couldn't bring herself to apologize, so she could only say hatefully: "I think you are deliberately lying and looking for trouble. There is no buyer. You just think that these things are yours to take home and no one can touch them. I don't care anymore. When you get married, take them all away as your dowry!"
Chunxi remained calm and said, "Okay, as long as someone comes to propose marriage, I will take these things and leave immediately."
Wang: “…”
This life is unbearable!
