Chapter 55 Returning Home
"Didn't I tell you to wait for me in the carriage? Why did you get off?"
As soon as he got on the carriage, Wei Lingze growled.
His tone was very bad and his face was extremely gloomy, as if ice was about to form.
Quezhi was so frightened that she dared not even breathe and looked at Xiao Qinghe worriedly.
Xiao Qinghe's expression remained unchanged. He stared at Wei Lingze for a long moment and said, "Wei Lang, why don't you ask me if it hurts?"
Xiao Qinghe's face was still pale, and his eyes were a little red.
She was born noble and has always been pampered. She is a girl who is extremely afraid of pain.
When she first came to Guishui, she happened to be a guest at the Wei family. She was so embarrassed that she kept crying and hid back at the Xiao family and refused to see Wei Lingze again. Wei Lingze found countless excuses to go to the Xiao family to coax her.
Later, he kept the day of her menstrual period in mind and would always prepare a heater for her to warm herself up in advance.
Back then, if she cried out in pain, he would feel heartbroken for several days. Now that she was injured and bleeding, he had forgotten even to care about her.
Wei Lingze also recalled the past, his expression stiffening a little. After a moment, he said, "In the past three years, I have endured pain a hundred times and a thousand times more than this."
On the wedding night, Wei Lingze said his legs hurt. Xiao Qinghe thought it was just drunken talk, but now it seems that he brought it up on purpose.
In the past three years, he has endured pain that ordinary people cannot imagine, and the Xiao family postponed the wedding, and she has never been with him.
He resented her.
So, for three days after their marriage, although he was extremely affectionate with her, he showed no mercy to her.
So even though Chunxi was already married, he would still lose his composure.
Her breathing hitched, and she spoke softly, "Wei Lang, you weren't like this before."
A flash of sarcasm flashed across Wei Lingze's eyes, but he didn't say anything harsh to Xiao Qinghe anymore. Instead, he softened his tone and said, "I'm sorry. I scared you today. Ever since I became paralyzed, I've been unable to control my emotions. I'll change when you're around. Don't be angry with me, okay?"
Xiao Qinghe closed his eyes to hide the disappointment in them.
She knew that Wei Lingze was not really giving in, but was using paralysis to shut her up.
He didn't want to have too much communication with her, he just wanted her to be a good wife of Wei Shao.
Xiao Qinghe had thought about this possibility a long time ago, but when he really faced it, he found that it was much more painful than he had imagined.
It really hurts.
Even breathing hurts.
Chunxi felt sorry for Xiao Qinghe all the way, but as soon as she entered the house, she was woken up by her mother's scolding.
"Oh, you still remember to come back. I thought you were living such a good life that you even forgot which way the door of your mother's house opened. Lord Shen is such a noble person. How could I have the blessing to be your mother-in-law?"
It was already past noon, and the mess in the yard showed that Wang had already treated her neighbors to the cooked food. Now that she was full of food and wine, she had the energy to scold them.
Chunxi immediately withdrew from her sympathy for Xiao Qinghe.
She is just a poor creature whose father died early and whose mother didn't love her. How could she have the right to feel sorry for Miss Xiao who grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth?
Chunxi stopped Shen Qingyuan who was about to explain and said coldly: "Since mother doesn't welcome us, we won't come back in the future."
Although Chunxi's wedding was held in a low-key manner, Wang still boasted about Shen Qingyuan's identity.
She had already boasted that her daughter and son-in-law would prepare generous gifts to honor her as their mother-in-law when they came back today. However, after she cooked the meal and waited for a long time, no one showed up.
Wang thought Chunxi really didn't recognize her as her mother and felt embarrassed, so she invited the neighbors to eat. When she saw the two men appear, Wang's anger subsided a lot. She said a few sarcastic words just to get Chunxi to coax her, but she didn't expect Chunxi to pull Shen Qingyuan and turn around and leave.
Wang couldn't hold it in any longer and quickly ran out to stop the man. "You really have a bad temper. I just said a few words to you and you left. Aren't you afraid of being laughed at by the neighbors?"
Wang was about to pull Chunxi into the yard, but Chunxi stood still. "There's nothing to eat at home. What are we going to do? Clean the table and wash the dishes?"
"Who asked you to work? There's chicken soup simmering on the stove, how come there's nothing to eat?" Knowing Chunxi was being stubborn, Wang looked at Shen Qingyuan and explained, "Don't be angry, Master Shen. I'm just a bit of a nag, but I don't mean any harm. You guys haven't come yet, and it's not good to make the neighbors wait, so I let them eat first. But your portion is reserved for you, and no one has touched it."
Cao Wen and Qian came out at this time. Shen Qingyuan squeezed Chunxi's hand and said softly, "I can smell the chicken soup. It smells so good."
Chunxi sighed silently. Her father was too easy to talk to. She didn't know how much she had suffered over the years.
Before entering the house, Shen Qingyuan asked Qingshu to bring the return gift into the house first.
Chunxi did not pick anything from his private store, but only prepared some cakes and tonics. Shen Qingyuan also added a dozen books. These books would be very helpful to Cao Wen, and his nephew would be able to read them when he grew up.
The status of scholars in Zhaoling was very high, and books were sold at high prices. The books that Shen Qingyuan brought also had annotations written by him, which could not be bought even with money. Wang was very disappointed after reading them.
There are plenty of books in the academy, so why take books home? You might as well take something substantial.
Chunxi pretended not to see Wang's expression, and quickly cleared the table and served chicken soup and rice.
The soup made from old hens is really delicious.
After taking a bite, Chunxi felt better. Just as she was about to eat a big mouthful, Cao Wen suddenly came over, grabbed Shen Qingyuan's sleeve and said, "Brother-in-law, someone in the academy is bullying me. Can you find me a different place to study?"
Cao Wen's voice was as thin as a mosquito's, and it was impossible to hear it clearly unless you listened carefully.
Chunxi paused while eating and said softly, "Awen, please speak louder. I didn't hear what you just said."
Cao Wen's lips trembled, his eyes were red, he couldn't speak, and he was about to cry.
Wang took him into her arms and said, "Awen doesn't know anyone in the new academy and is bullied all the time. He's lost a lot of weight. You should find him a new place to study."
Wang looked distressed, as if Cao Wen had suffered a great injustice.
Chunxi didn't notice how Cao Wen had lost weight, so she followed up on Wang's question and asked, "Mother, where do you think it would be best for me to go to school?"
"I haven't been to school, so how would I know a good place?" Wang pretended to decline, then looked at Shen Qingyuan and said, "Young Master Wei mentioned before that he wanted Awen to attend the Yun Clan's school. That should be a good place. Can you find a way to get Awen into the Yun Clan's school?"
Wang's abacus beads were about to break Chunxi's face.
Chunxi's face darkened. She didn't look at Wang, but only at Cao Wen: "Awen, you are almost ten years old. If you have anything to say, you must learn to speak up for yourself. You can't always hide behind others, understand?"
Wang immediately defended her son: "He is still young, and it is pitiful that he is bullied. If your son-in-law can't do it, just say it directly. Why are you being mean to your brother?"
Chunxi slammed the chopsticks on the table. The sudden burst of momentum made Wang and Cao Wen tremble all over, and the child in Qian's arms was so scared that he started crying.
"I'm letting Awen speak. If Mom interrupts again, I'll just pretend I don't have this brother anymore."
