Chapter 18 Su Wanwan feels a little depressed
In the entire afternoon, Widow Liu cooked for Su Wanwan, fetched water, and folded clothes for the chickens and ducks. After the meal was ready, she left again, as she had to rush to the town to buy enlightenment books for Su Chaochao before dark.
Su Wanwan took out the dumplings and asked Pei Changfeng, "Do you find this troublesome?"
"No," Pei Changfeng shook his head, "I don't think it's a bother for you to take care of me. It's just teaching Chao Chao to read. It's nothing."
Su Wanwan thought about it for a moment and told him that Widow Liu was not her biological mother. Unexpectedly, Pei Changfeng smiled gently.
"I know."
"How did you know?" Su Wanwan was surprised. "Did I tell you about it sometime and then forget it?"
She looked very cute and innocent. Pei Changfeng lowered his eyes to look at the big bowl of dumplings in front of him. "It's not hard to tell that your mother-in-law looks only a few years older than you."
Su Wanwan suddenly stopped talking. Pei Changfeng looked over and saw her eating dumplings with her head down, and she didn't seem to want to continue talking.
She had been running around all day and must be tired. Pei Changfeng didn't say anything more and took the initiative to clean up the dishes after eating the dumplings.
Su Wanwan was a little depressed. After washing up, she lay on the bed without saying a word.
At Pei Changfeng's strong request, they now sleep with separate quilts, because there is only one bed in the house. Su Wanwan is convinced that if there is another bed in the house, Pei Changfeng will not sleep with her.
"Oh." She sighed softly. She was really afraid that Pei Changfeng would abandon her when he became successful in the future.
The door closed. Pei Changfeng had just come back from taking medicine. He sat down on the edge of the bed and asked, "Miss Su, are you worried about something?"
Su Wanwan turned her head away and ignored him. She felt a little uncomfortable and didn't want to talk.
How could Pei Changfeng say that...
"Let's buy mung bean cakes and glutinous rice cakes tomorrow," Pei Changfeng said in a gentle voice, making people feel as if they were being blown by the breeze on a summer night, very comfortable, "Don't be too hard on yourself for me, what matters most is that you like it."
These words sound like love words.
Su Wanwan pursed her lips and said sullenly, "Do you know what I like?"
"You may like sweet snacks like glutinous rice cakes, mung bean cakes, almond cakes, and shortbread," Pei Changfeng twisted a strand of hair on the pillow around his finger and placed it on a chair beside him, "Really?"
"No!" Su Wanwan raised her head, "Do you dislike me?"
Pei Changfeng was stunned, and then he realized that there was some anger on her face, "No, why did Miss Su say that?"
"Then you said I am about the same age as my stepmother!"
Pei Changfeng pondered for a moment, and it seemed that he was not saying this.
He tried to explain, "I mean my mother-in-law is very young. She doesn't look much older than you."
"What's the difference between these two sentences?" Su Wanwan turned her head, "Do you think I look old?"
"No, it's just..." Pei Changfeng didn't quite understand.
"Just what?" Su Wanwan muttered.
Pei Changfeng seemed to understand a little, "No, you are very young and well-born, but your mother-in-law and you don't look like you have an age gap like an ordinary mother and daughter, so I can guess that you are not biological mother and daughter."
Su Wanwan didn't hear the next sentence. She only heard Pei Changfeng say that she was young and beautiful. Just like that, the unhappiness in her heart disappeared in an instant.
"Really?" She smiled again. "Do you really think so?"
"Yes." Pei Changfeng nodded.
Su Wanwan sat up and unwrapped the quilt for him, "Husband, go to bed quickly. It's so late. Go to bed quickly."
Her temper came and went quickly, and Pei Changfeng preferred to look at her as a child. After all, he was four or five years older than Su Wanwan.
Su Wanwan moved closer to Pei Changfeng and leaned against his arm. Pei Changfeng turned slightly and faced away from her.
Su Wanwan poked his back, and when he didn't respond, she poked his shoulder.
She poked it here and there as if she were poking at something fun.
She didn't use much strength, just gently, with her fingers being soft, and it felt a little itchy when she poked them.
Pei Changfeng couldn't sleep because of her poking, "What's wrong, Miss Su?"
"Husband," Su Wanwan pressed her cheek against his back, "Are you really not going to look at your legs anymore?"
Pei Changfeng's breathing suddenly became heavy. "My legs are not in good condition anymore."
"How do you know it won't work if you haven't tried it? If it doesn't work, let's find a few more doctors. There's always someone who can help."
Her voice was soft, and the hot air that came out when she spoke made Pei Changfeng very uncomfortable.
He exhaled heavily, then turned around. Su Wanwan did not move away, and her cheek was buried in Pei Changfeng's chest.
"Miss Su," Pei Changfeng gently pressed two fingers against her forehead, pushing it once but not moving it, "Men and women should not touch each other."
"That's a man and a woman, we're not," Su Wanwan smiled and hugged him, "We're husband and wife."
What on earth made her so devoted? Pei Changfeng couldn't understand her.
Su Wanwan was bullying Pei Changfeng, obviously bullying him.
Pei Changfeng was helpless. He was still a soft-hearted person, especially when it came to Su Wanwan. He couldn't find any place that could harden his heart. He owed Su Wanwan.
After Su Wanwan fell asleep, Pei Changfeng took her hand away, moved her head back onto her pillow, and then lay down again.
But there was still the fragrance of Su Wanwan in the breath, like the scent of gardenia.
Because Uncle Pei was crazy and no one cared for him, the village chief asked Su Wanwan to bring him a bowl of rice every day. Su Wanwan didn't want to agree at first, but Pei Changfeng agreed first.
The village chief was pleased and said, "You are a good child."
Pei Changfeng smiled, "Uncle has taken good care of me, I should take better care of him."
After the village chief left, Su Wanwan was curious, "Husband, do we really have to take care of your uncle?"
"Yes," Pei Changfeng looked at the chickens and ducks fighting for food in the fence, his smile still undiminished, "Uncle treated me well, I will never forget it."
In that case, Su Wanwan didn't say much, but after all, she and Pei Changfeng had been husband and wife for such a long time, so she could probably guess a little bit.
The meat from yesterday had not been finished yet, so Su Wanwan made a bowl of steamed pork with rice flour today, still for two people. Pei Changfeng did not ask. After eating, he went to bask in the sun for a while before going to the kitchen. After a while, he went out with the bowl in his hand.
He was gone for half an hour, and when he came back, Su Wanwan was washing clothes. She felt hot, so she took off her coat and washed it while Pei Changfeng was away, and only wore a bellyband.
When Pei Changfeng came back, she had just wrung out the last piece of clothing and hung it up to dry. She really didn't want to listen to any words about rules or regulations, so she hurried back to the house to change her clothes.
Now Pei Changfeng also understood that he could not reason with Su Wanwan, because Su Wanwan simply would not listen.
He felt a heat on his face and went to get some water to wash his hands.
"Husband, when will your classmate bring the books to me?" Su Wanwan fanned herself because she was so hot.
"The academy is closed every two weeks, so we probably have to wait until next month." Pei Changfeng saw that her hair was all tied up and piled on top of her head like a dark cloud, and couldn't help but praise her, "Miss Su has a lot of hair."
"That's right," Su Wanwan said proudly, "My hair is black and shiny, so many people envy it. My father said that I have had a lot of hair since I was born, unlike some people who have less hair and yellow hair."
She looked at Pei Changfeng's hair and said, "My dear, you have a lot of hair too. I heard that scholars have less hair, but you don't look like that."
No matter what the topic is, Su Wanwan can always bring out a lot of things to say, and it is almost never boring to be with her.
"Really?" Pei Changfeng touched his hair, "I didn't notice it."
As she spoke, Su Wanwan sat down in front of him and touched his hair with one hand. "Yes, my husband, you not only have a lot of hair, but it is also good-looking. The most important thing is that you don't have so many requirements. There is also a scholar in our village who never cares about his wife. Not to mention washing dishes and sweeping the floor, he never even does farm work."
As she spoke, her voice became sweeter and sweeter, "How can you be so nice to me? You help me with everything. If I tell others about it, I don't know how many girls will envy me."
She held her cheeks with both hands and her eyes were shining, as if she was explaining a very happy fact.
Pei Changfeng had never seen such a woman.
Su Wanwan looked at him with bent eyes, hoping that he would cheer up soon and let her live a life without worries about food and clothing. There was a teacher in the village next to them, or even several villages away, and he had already lived in a big brick and tile house.
"Miss Su..."
Pei Changfeng hadn't finished speaking when he looked down and saw that Su Wanwan's collar had opened at some point, revealing a piece of fair skin and a deep groove between her and the corner of her lotus-pink blouse.
