Chapter 78: The End of Love Between Husband and Wife
Those words echoed in Su Wanwan's mind.
"But I can divorce my wife and marry another."
She felt pains in her stomach, as if something had broken. Her whole body seemed to have suddenly lost strength and she could only feel pain, a pain that came from the bottom of her heart.
When he saw Su Wanwan, Pei Changfeng was stunned for a moment, then flew over and caught Su Wanwan's body which was about to fall to the ground.
His voice trembled, "Wanwan..."
Su Wanwan's face turned pale. She pursed her lips and turned away, not looking at him.
Pei Changfeng picked up Su Wanwan and held her sideways. Seeing Liao Cheng's smug smile, he didn't even have time to care. "Go back home quickly! Let the midwife get ready! Quick!"
The driver whipped the horse as fast as he could, but this place was far from Pei's house, and it would take at least half an hour to get back.
Su Wanwan clutched Pei Changfeng's sleeve tightly, as if she had something to ask but couldn't say it. She opened her lips, tears flowed down, and soon she lost consciousness.
Pei Changfeng's sleeves had been stained red by her blood. He begged with a sobbing tone, "Please, hold on a little longer, please..."
The carriage rushed all the way, and when it arrived at Pei Mansion, everyone was shocked.
It was not until Pei Changfeng came out holding Su Wanwan, whose skirt was stained with blood, that people in the mansion started running around like boiling water and oil.
In addition to the two midwives, there was also a doctor who entered the room with Su Wanwan.
When Su Cha rushed over after hearing the news, he only saw Pei Changfeng sitting on the ground in a daze. His face was covered with tears and half of his body was bloody. He did not look like a living person.
Su Cha went up and slapped him, "You bastard! If anything happens to my daughter today, you won't be able to pay it back even if you have ten lives!"
Pei Changfeng let him beat him, staring at the direction of the delivery room, watching basins of blood coming in and out, feeling a tearing pain in his heart.
He claimed to be a smart man, but now he had lost his composure and harmed his closest relatives.
He sobbed like a hysterical little animal.
Pei Changfeng, the imperial physician from the palace, was also invited, as well as the best doctor in the capital.
Su Cha brought the hundred-year-old ginseng given by Emperor Chongming. They were trying their best to find anything that could save Su Wanwan's life.
From dawn to dusk and then back to dawn, countless hours passed before the cry of a baby was heard.
Pei Changfeng's eyes lit up again, and he murmured, "It's born, it's born..."
He stood up, staggered, and fell to the ground in embarrassment, "Wanwan, Wanwan... Can you hear me, Wanwan?"
Sucha waved him away.
Imperial Physician Chen came out with sweat all over his forehead, "Finally he was saved."
The next person to come out was the midwife, holding a small child in her arms. "It's a boy. Congratulations, sir, congratulations, general."
Widow Liu breathed a sigh of relief, "Buddha bless you!"
Pei Changfeng raised his bloodshot eyes and looked at the child. He stood up and wanted to look at the child, but was blocked by Su Cha.
Su Cha said coldly: "I will take them back to the General's Mansion. If you don't solve your mess, don't even think about seeing them again!"
Pei Changfeng closed his eyes and said, "I miscalculated today."
Since there were outsiders present, the two didn't say much.
After sending away the imperial physician and the midwife, Pei Changfeng went to see Su Wanwan. Su Wanwan was in poor condition and was surrounded by doctors.
When Pei Changfeng thought that everything that happened today was caused by him, he blamed himself so much that he wanted to kill himself.
Widow Liu was holding her child, whose name was Pei Fuguang.
Widow Liu looked worriedly between Su Cha and Pei Changfeng. Finally, she sighed and said nothing.
The people brought by Su Cha had already returned to the general's mansion to prepare the things that Su Wanwan and her son would need.
Su Cha looked quietly at Xiao Fu Guang's red face, wondering what he was thinking.
After a while, Pei Changfeng took the initiative to come to him and said, "Father-in-law, today's matter was indeed my negligence..."
Before he finished speaking, Su Cha's angry shout came, "Do you know that your negligence almost cost the lives of my daughter and grandson!"
His voice was so loud that it scared little Fu Guang.
Little Fu Guang started crying, and Su Cha immediately stopped talking.
Widow Liu tried to smooth things over while coaxing the child, "Okay, okay, Wanwan and the child are both fine."
Su Cha lowered his voice, pointed at little Fu Guang and said to Pei Changfeng: "Do you know that it's all because of you that this child can't even be close to his own mother after he was born, because his mother is still being kept alive by the imperial physician!"
Pei Changfeng looked at the child crying because of fear and lowered his head.
Widow Liu took the child and went to find the wet nurse, leaving the seat in the front hall for the two people.
Su Cha said to Pei Changfeng directly, "This is the second time I tell you, I want to take them mother and son away. Don't come to my general's mansion until you have dealt with your mess!"
Pei Changfeng said in a hoarse voice, "Okay."
After Su Cha carried Su Wanwan, who was wrapped tightly, into the carriage, Pei Changfeng followed all the way to the gate of the general's mansion.
Until the door was closed tightly, Su Wanwan did not open her eyes to look at him.
Pei Changfeng sent his wife and children away just like that, and overnight, he seemed to become a lonely man.
After returning home, Pei Changfeng sat quietly for a long time. He didn't know how long it was. It seemed like the second sun had risen again. Then he moved, changed into his official uniform, and went to the Hanlin Academy to report for duty.
Many people knew that Su Wanwan had a difficult delivery the day before, but almost no outsiders knew the reason.
Bai Jitong saw that Pei Changfeng looked unhappy, as if he hadn't slept for days and nights, so he couldn't help but ask, "Are your wife and children okay?"
Pei Changfeng took a sip of tea and said, "Mother and child are safe."
Although he hadn't slept for two days, he was now very awake. If possible, he would even have the strength to go to the palace and skin Liao Cheng.
Bai Jitong smiled, "Congratulations, have you chosen a name for the child?"
"Pei Fuguang."
"Nice name, nice name."
"We did what happened that day together." Pei Changfeng said this out of the blue.
Bai Jitong realized something and reacted quickly, "What do you mean?"
Pei Changfeng did not intend to hide this from him. He told him what Liao Cheng had done, "She found out what I did and took revenge on me. What about you? What evidence do you have against her? How will she take revenge on you?"
Bai Jitong's face suddenly turned ugly. He knew better than anyone what he had.
Bai Jitong gritted his teeth and said, "This damn woman, she is only allowed to bully others, but not others to fight back?"
Pei Changfeng lowered his eyes, "So, how are we going to fight back?"
"I can't believe it," Bai Jitong pressed his nose with a headache, "She doesn't seem to be afraid of anything."
"Yeah... I'm not afraid of anything."
Pei Changfeng suddenly laughed.
Bai Jitong knew that he must have already made a plan in his mind, so he didn't ask too many questions, because if Pei Changfeng needed him, he would definitely help.
After finishing his shift, Pei Changfeng went to the general's mansion first.
Su Cha did not let anyone in, and did not reveal even a single bit of information about Su Wanwan and Fu Guang, mother and son.
The next day, it was still the same.
Su Wanwan woke up in the afternoon of the next day. Her eyes were empty until she heard Fu Guang crying, then she became a little more sober.
Fu Guang was lying next to her, a small one.
Su Wanwan moved and felt severe pain all over her body.
Widow Liu pushed the door open and came in. "I figured you should be awake by now. Are you hungry?"
Su Wanwan didn't say anything, so Widow Liu spoke first.
"You and Fu Guang are in the general's mansion now. Your father has also told you not to think too much and take good care of yourself after the baby is born. He can support you and Fu Guang for the rest of your life."
Su Wanwan opened her lips, "Fu Guang?"
Widow Liu fed her a spoonful of brown sugar water and said, "Yes, this child is called Fu Guang, which is the name of Chang Fengqi."
When Su Wanwan heard the word "Changfeng", her heart felt like it was stabbed by a knife. It hurt so much.
"Hey, don't cry," Widow Liu said quickly, "crying during confinement will hurt your eyes."
Su Wanwan couldn't help it, she felt very uncomfortable.
"Although I don't know what happened between you, I guess it's most likely a misunderstanding," Widow Liu said her guess, "Changfeng is not the kind of person who would do something to let you down."
"Whether it's true or not, I want him to tell me in person." Su Wanwan closed her eyes and stopped thinking about him.
She looked at Fu Guang's eyebrows and eyes carefully. This child looked very much like Pei Changfeng.
Fu Guang slept most of the time. It was not until the tenth day after his birth that he seemed to fully open his big eyes.
Su Cha was reluctant to put Fu Guang down, and said cheerfully: "This kid is so handsome. He will become the top scholar in the imperial examination and come back to show his grandfather."
Fu Guang didn't understand, but his big eyes would follow people and he would occasionally hum a few words, as if in response.
Pei Changfeng still came every day, but Su Cha didn't let him see Su Wanwan and the child, so he couldn't see them.
Su Wanwan's health improved a little and she was able to get out of bed, but she couldn't leave the house. A doctor came to take her pulse every day. As long as the doctor said it was useful, Su Cha would buy it immediately.
On the day of leaving confinement, Su Wanwan received a gift, a ruby hairpin. She knew at a glance that Pei Changfeng was the only one who knew her vulgar taste.
Widow Liu asked, "Why don't you go meet him? I'll tell you the truth, he comes here every day, but your father won't let him in."
Su Wanwan looked at her son in the cradle without answering, and no one knew what she was thinking.
Su Chaochao kissed Fu Guang's fair and tender face several times and said, "Sister, are you really not going to see your brother-in-law?"
Su Wanwan shook her head, "No."
She had thought about a lot during this month, all about Pei Changfeng's words that day.
The power of that sentence actually made Su Wanwan begin to doubt his sincerity over the past year.
Is it that Pei Changfeng is untrustworthy, or is she too easily shaken?
Su Wanwan couldn't figure it out, and she didn't want to think about it anymore. When she thought about it, her heart ached and she couldn't breathe.
At this time, little Fu Guang started crying for some reason. Su Wanwan held the child in her arms and coaxed him, "Good boy, don't cry, don't cry."
Little Fuguan cried heart-wrenchingly. Pei Changfeng, who was standing at the gate of the mansion, seemed to sense something and he raised his head.
The housekeeper of the general's mansion said to him, "Sir, please don't waste your time here. The general has ordered that you cannot see the young lady and the young master."
Pei Changfeng didn't move. The housekeeper sighed and closed the ear door.
On the other side, Su Wanwan finally managed to coax little Pei Fuguang, but she felt uneasy again.
Su Cha saw through it, and he said, "Girl, we have steamed sea bass tonight. Isn't that your favorite? Let's go and eat."
Su Wanwan nodded and took two steps forward, and suddenly it started raining in the sky.
At the dinner table, Widow Liu served Su Wanwan a bowl of soybean stewed pig's feet, "Eat more, it's good for your health."
Su Cha picked up a piece of beef for Su Wanwan with chopsticks, "These are all your favorites."
The two of them have taken great care of Su Wanwan over the past month, and her health has indeed improved.
Su Wanwan took a bite of the pig's trotter, then stopped, not knowing what she was thinking about.
Su Cha put down his chopsticks and said, "If you want to see him, Dad won't stop you, but you have to eat well. We can talk about it after dinner."
Su Wanwan suddenly felt wronged and lowered her head with red eyes.
Su Cha said softly, "You are such a loser."
At the door, the butler reopened the door and saw that Pei Changfeng had not left yet. He smiled and said, "Sir, the general wants you to come in."
Pei Changfeng was pleasantly surprised, "Wanwan is willing to see me?"
The butler shook his head. "I don't know about that. Please come in first."
Pei Changfeng walked all the way to the house where Su Wanwan lived. There was no one inside. He looked around at the furnishings. They were all objects and colors that Su Wanwan and Su Lili liked.
Suddenly, his eyes fell on the cradle beside the bed. He walked over and saw Pei Fuguang.
Little Fuguan was looking at the sky with his eyes open. When he saw Pei Changfeng, he frowned, not knowing this person.
"Fu Guang," Pei Changfeng reached out and touched the child's cheek, "I'm sorry that Daddy took so long to come and see you."
Xiao Fuguang said "ah" and didn't understand.
Pei Changfeng did not hug him, but just watched him quietly, until little Fuguang yawned and fell asleep again, then he smiled gently. There was relief in his smile, but more of bitterness.
During this month, he had wondered countless times about how Su Wanwan's health had recovered and what his child would look like. Now that he saw them, he suddenly felt that all his persistence for a month had not been in vain.
Pei Changfeng stood up, stroked Su Wanwan's pillow, and carefully folded every corner of the quilt.
He picked up a strand of Su Wanwan's hair and placed it in his palm, as if he was feeling Su Wanwan's warmth.
When Su Wanwan came in, she saw Pei Changfeng's appearance. It would be a lie to say she didn't feel sad or distressed.
But because of the misunderstanding, she didn't want to show her vulnerable side, so she had to pretend that she didn't care to avoid revealing her embarrassment.
Hearing the voice, Pei Changfeng turned around and saw Su Wanwan.
The person he has been worried about every day for the past month, his wife.
"Wanwan." Pei Changfeng spoke.
Su Wanwan turned her face away.
Su Wanwan had lost some weight, and Pei Changfeng felt guilty and blamed himself.
The wind blows through the eaves.
Pei Changfeng still saw the moisture in the corners of her eyes.
He walked over and put his arm around Su Wanwan, “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault.”
The next moment, a dull pain came over him, and Su Wanwan bit his shoulder as if she was trying to bite off a piece of flesh.
