Chapter 9 We are husband and wife, don't say those words

The light was dim like an oil lamp bean. Su Wanwan rubbed her eyes to make sure she was not seeing things. She said with a mixture of surprise and joy, "Husband, are you awake?"

Her smile blossomed like a flower, so bright and beautiful that it seemed so out of place in this room.

Pei Changfeng turned his eyes away uncomfortably, feeling a little uncomfortable with her address.

In fact, he was occasionally conscious during his coma and could vaguely hear voices from the outside world. He also knew that there was a woman accompanying him recently, who was always chattering about gossip about family matters.

He rarely heard such gossip, and perhaps because Su Wanwan's voice was so pleasant, Pei Changfeng didn't feel annoyed.

Su Wanwan had already come close to Pei Changfeng to ask about his well-being, "Husband, are you thirsty or hungry? Do you want some water?"

"I..." Pei Changfeng's voice was very hoarse because he hadn't spoken for a long time.

Su Wanwan very considerately brought some water, "Husband, I'll feed you. It's hot now, so the water is warm."

As soon as she came closer, Pei Changfeng stiffened his body and closed his eyes.

"Husband? Husband?" Su Wanwan called him twice, not understanding what happened to him. She thought he just woke up and was not feeling well. "I'll go get a doctor for you."

As soon as she finished speaking, her sleeve was pulled. Pei Changfeng opened his eyes, shook his head slightly at her, and then said, "Clothes."

After saying that, he closed his eyes again.

Su Wanwan lowered her head. She was indeed only wearing a bellyband and knee-length pants, but they were husband and wife. Did they have to be so particular about this?

She muttered something under her breath, then wrapped herself in clothes, "It's hot to put on clothes."

Seeing that Pei Changfeng didn't respond, Su Wanwan tied the belt of her clothes perfunctorily and said, "Okay, put it on."

Pei Changfeng opened his eyes and saw that she looked unhappy. He didn't say anything and his eyes fell on the water.

Su Wanwan handed it to him and said, "Husband, can you only open your eyes or move now? Are you feeling uncomfortable? Wait for me in the room, I will go get a doctor for you."

Her concern was so obvious that Pei Changfeng felt a little better after drinking the water. "No need, thank you Miss Su."

"Miss Su?" Su Wanwan pointed at herself with a look of disbelief, "You call me Miss Su?"

Pei Changfeng's eyes were filled with a cold light, "Yes."

After working so hard to serve him for so long, Su Wanwan felt as if her heart was being pulled and said angrily, "We are getting married!"

"I was in a coma at that time, so the marriage doesn't count." Pei Changfeng said in a light voice.

She was so furious that Pei Changfeng thought she would leave in anger, but no one answered for a long time. Pei Changfeng looked and saw the woman with her head slightly lowered, her shoulders trembling slightly, as if she was crying.

"You..." Pei Changfeng hesitated.

Su Wanwan wiped her tears fiercely, turned her head and glared at him, "I don't care, I'm already married to you anyway, if you chase me away again, I'll hit my head and die!"

She said this, as if she was extremely aggrieved, but unwilling to admit defeat, with tears in her eyes, "Anyway, you are not allowed to say such things again!"

Pei Changfeng was stabbed by her gaze and lowered his eyelashes, "I'm sorry, I was rude."

After he finished speaking, he pursed his pale lips slightly, turned away, and stopped looking at her.

Pei Changfeng didn't want Su Wanwan to stay, he wanted her to leave.

Su Wanwan wiped her tears in two or three strokes, then crawled to the inside of the bed and lay down, leaning closer to Pei Changfeng, and said to him in a crying voice, "We are husband and wife, please don't say those things anymore, okay?"

Not only did she not kill Pei Changfeng, but she also brought him back to life. Su Wanwan really felt that they were a perfect match. Besides, Pei Changfeng was a scholar after all. If he recovered, he could take the imperial examination. If he passed, she would make a fortune.

Su Wanwan's eyes were filled with tears. She sincerely couldn't bear to let him go. She gently leaned against his shoulder and said in a soft voice, "Husband."

Pei Changfeng had never dated a woman before, and he found her closeness very uncomfortable, and he felt psychologically overwhelmed.

He had clearly driven Su Wanwan away. As long as she was gone, no matter what happened afterwards, it would have nothing to do with her and would not implicate her.

"Miss Su," Pei Changfeng sighed softly, "I am disabled and have no hope of passing the imperial examination. Even if I try my best in the future, I may only be able to barely make a living. It is not wise for you to marry me."

"Which couple would have to consider whether it's wise or not?" Su Wanwan said firmly, "It's fate between us, and it can't be compared with those empty words."

She didn't believe in disability or not. She would cure Pei Changfeng even if she had to sell everything she had. Even if she couldn't cure him, Pei Changfeng would open a school and be a teacher. Being with him was much better than being with others.

Su Wanwan hugged Pei Changfeng's arm and said, "I don't care. Anyway, I am yours in life and your ghost in death!"

"Miss Su..." Pei Changfeng wanted to pull his arm free, but his strength had not yet recovered, so he could only let Su Wanwan hold his arm.

He felt helpless towards Su Wanwan. His physical exhaustion did not allow him to think any more. He told her, "Don't tell anyone that I'm awake."

"I know." Su Wanwan wiped her tears on his shirt, "I won't tell anyone."

Her tears were wet and slightly cool. Pei Changfeng looked at her for the last time and then fell into a deep sleep.

The sunshine is warm, without the familiar darkness and dampness. The air is filled with the dry and warm scent of soapberries. Outside the house there is the sound of water washing clothes, dripping, so ordinary and yet so nostalgic.

Pei Changfeng looked at the ceiling of the tent and for a moment suspected that he had fallen into an illusory dream before death.

In fact, he seldom returned to the village. After he was ten years old, he lived in the academy. He came back once a month and left after one night. After his parents passed away, home became an illusory thing in his memory, with only thin walls and old furniture left.

Pei Changfeng closed his eyes and tried hard to support his body and sit up, but his body was too weak and it took all his energy just to open his eyes and wake up.

The door was half-open, and Su Wanwan's graceful figure could be vaguely seen walking around. She was holding a large wooden basin with difficulty, which contained dirty clothes and some summer clothes that Pei Changfeng used to wear.

Pei Changfeng only looked away when Su Wanwan shook her peach pink bellyband and hung it up.

There was a knock on the door, and Aunt Pei came in with half a winter melon and smiled warmly at Su Wanwan, "Wanwan, Aunt saw you went to the village chief's house early in the morning. What did you do? Is there no food at home? Look, Aunt got a big winter melon specially for you."

Su Wanwan took the winter melon with a sweet smile and said, "Nothing, just trouble the village chief to go to the town to ask a doctor to come and check on Changfeng."

"Is Changfeng feeling better?" Aunt Pei asked tentatively.

"Yes," Su Wanwan lowered her voice, "I'm awake."

Pei Changfeng clenched his fists, and his arms trembled slightly from exerting too much force.

Aunt Pei was startled and raised her voice involuntarily, "Awake?"

Su Wanwan smiled, "I dreamed yesterday that he passed the imperial examination. Auntie, do you think this is a hint?"

"Dream?" Aunt Pei was annoyed. "You dreamed that he woke up?"

"Yeah, I can only dream about it," Su Wanwan muttered, "My mother didn't tell me at the time that he hadn't woken up yet, and I was so anxious. Who can live without a man? How can I, a woman, live?"

Her eyes fell on Aunt Pei, "Aunt, you said you treat me like your own daughter, and now that I'm living like this, do you want to help me a little?"

Aunt Pei's face, which had not yet subsided from swelling, trembled and she said hurriedly, "It's not that I don't want to help, but Yaozu hasn't gotten married yet. Alas, I won't talk to you for now. Aunt Pei will come to see you in a few days."

After saying this, Aunt Pei ran away as if she was escaping.

Su Wanwan continued to hang clothes, feeling uncontrollably proud. As expected, apart from taking action, borrowing money was the best way to distance herself from the relationship.

She was humming an unknown tune, sweet and light.

Pei Changfeng watched quietly, unable to describe his feelings. He just thought...
