"You didn't come here to see this house?"
"I've come to take what's mine..."
A week ago, Pei Tingyu received a letter from his uncle Yang Yuejin, who wanted to meet him and return some things left to him by Pei Tingyu's grandfather.
"We'll take a boat to Wufeng Island tomorrow..." Pei Tingyu said and prepared to take Si Yang away.
When he turned around, two aunties carrying vegetable baskets came towards him. They cast inquiring glances at Pei Tingyu's face without any hesitation.
"Is that the boy the Bai family adopted before? He's grown so tall now?"
"That's true. I used to think that boy had a good-looking face, like his uncle who married into the family. Now it seems that he is even better-looking than his uncle!"
"That's right. I heard that he joined the army before he was 18. It seems that he doesn't need to rely on his appearance to marry into the family like his uncle did."
Pei Tingyu listened to the two people's discussion with a calm expression, as if it had nothing to do with him.
Until I heard another aunt's voice sighing, "What's the point of being good-looking? He's still a heartless ungrateful person. The eldest sister of the Wu family used to secretly give him food, but now he has come back as a decent person. The eldest sister is almost tortured to death, and he probably didn't even look at her."
"What did you say?" Pei Tingyu suddenly stopped.
"No...nothing..." The two aunts were obviously frightened by Pei Tingyu's serious look.
"Yangyang, let's go..."
Pei Tingyu didn't ask them any more questions, but pulled Si Yang into the alley deep in the courtyard.
When Pei Tingyu lived under the Bai family's roof, he often had no food to eat. Sometimes, Bai Tian would sneak out for a whole day to play, and he would have to endure the Bai family's wrath.
Being whipped, forced to kneel, and starved for a whole day were common occurrences.
If there were no kind-hearted people who helped him from time to time, how could he have survived for ten years?
The person who helped him the most was Aunt Wu. Aunt Wu always secretly fed him food, brought him medicine after he was beaten, and sometimes secretly took him out to eat a bowl of meat wontons.
"The Bai family is such a piece of shit! You're still growing up, how could they not give you food?"
"Auntie, I will repay you when I grow up." Ten-year-old Pei Tingyu promised in a muffled voice while wolfing down his food.
Aunt Wu gently touched his head, her eyes full of tenderness, "Auntie doesn't want you to repay me, just grow up safely..."
Pei Tingyu never forgot the promise he made when he was young. He would send Aunt Wu a sum of money every year that was enough for her living expenses, and would also send her some food and daily necessities during the holidays.
Logically speaking, she should be living a good life.
But what did those people mean when they said Aunt Wu was tortured to death? This chapter has been read (please click on the next chapter to continue reading!)
