Chapter 1296 Preserving the Corpse

With one attacking and the other providing support, the two quickly killed several men in black.

However, it seemed as if the enemy was never-ending, and soon many more rushed in.

Although Xu Yuehuai was highly skilled in martial arts, the prolonged battle had left her feeling exhausted. Fine beads of sweat appeared on her forehead, and her breathing became rapid.

"Give me your life!"

Bai Yu suddenly shouted and thrust his sword into the chest of a man in black. The man in black fell to the ground, stabbed in the chest, but Bai Yu's wound also reopened due to the excessive force of the thrust, and blood gushed out.

"Are you alright?" Xu Yuehuai hurriedly helped Bai Yu up and asked, her voice trembling with concern.

Bai Yu shook his head to indicate that he was alright, then looked at Xu Yuehuai and said, "I didn't expect that you would save me at this time."

Xu Yuehuai didn't say anything, but just glared at him coldly.

"Instead of wasting time talking nonsense, you should save your energy to kill more people later." Her voice was cold but full of power.

The two fought side by side again and quickly killed all the remaining men in black. However, Xu Yuehuai noticed that Bai Yu's face was growing paler and paler, knowing that his injuries were very serious.

"We need to get out of here quickly," Xu Yuehuai said, supporting Bai Yu, her voice firm and resolute.

Bai Yu followed her lead and walked out of the tent, only to find that the outside was in chaos.

The soldiers were engaged in a fierce battle with the men in black, and Xu Yuehuai and Bai Yu could only carefully avoid them, looking for a chance to escape.

Suddenly, Xu Yuehuai spotted a stray warhorse grazing leisurely in the distance. A thought struck her, and she quickly pulled Bai Yu towards the horse. The two of them leaped onto the steed, whipped it, and galloped away, soon leaving the men in black behind.

However, they did not let their guard down, because they knew that these men in black were only part of the assassination operation, and that greater dangers awaited them.

They sped along and finally arrived at a remote little village. They found a dilapidated corner and stopped.

Xu Yuehuai helped Bai Yu sit down on the ground, and she took out a bottle of wound medicine from her bosom and applied it to Bai Yu's wound.

"Thank you for not leaving me at that time." Bai Yu's voice was weak but full of gratitude.

Xu Yuehuai didn't speak, but silently looked down at the wound medicine in her hand. She knew that the reason she was able to save Bai Yu was not because she was brave, but because she couldn't let Bai Yu's body die.

"Why did you save me?" Bai Yu suddenly asked, his eyes filled with confusion and bewilderment.

Xu Yuehuai looked up at Bai Yu, "Because I don't want you to die."

"I don't want the original owner of this body to return as a wandering ghost."

She added, her voice tinged with helplessness and sadness.

Looking into Xu Yuehuai's eyes, Bai Yu felt a surge of inexplicable emotion. He reached out and gently took Xu Yuehuai's hand.

"Thank you, Xiaoyue. No matter why you saved me, I will always remember your kindness."

Xu Yuehuai simply lowered her head silently.

She knew there were too many barriers and differences between her and Bai Yu, but in this critical moment, she could not ignore the feelings deep in her heart.

In a remote village far from the hustle and bustle, Xu Yuehuai and Bai Yu spent a few rare days of peace.

The afterglow of the setting sun shone on the ancient locust tree at the entrance of the village, and the dappled light and shadow reflected the figures of the two people who depended on each other for survival.

However, they knew that this calm was merely the calm before the storm, and a greater danger was quietly approaching.

"No assassins have come after us during this time, so it seems we've escaped their pursuit. We should head back now," Xu Yuehuai said.

Bai Yu nodded gently, a slight smile appearing on his pale face: "My injuries have almost healed, so let's go now."

A few days later, the two bid farewell to the village and embarked on their journey back to the capital.

They chose a side road away from the main road, hoping to avoid possible pursuit.

However, they had not been gone long when devastating news came from behind them—the entire village had been massacred.

An indescribable sorrow welled up in Xu Yuehuai and Bai Yu's hearts. They knew that all of this was because of them. However, they had no time to wallow in grief, because they knew that only by moving forward could they find a glimmer of hope.

They arrived at a remote mountain forest, surrounded by thick fog, as if they were in a mysterious labyrinth.

Xu Yuehuai stopped and looked around, her brows furrowed: "I feel like we've been here before."

Bai Yu also felt a sense of unease, trying to find a familiar trace: "It seems we're lost."

The two continued on their way, hoping to find a way out of the mountains.

However, just then, they suddenly bumped into a group of people. It was a caravan, busy unloading goods on their way to the next town.

The caravan leader was a middle-aged man. He looked Xu Yuehuai and Bai Yu up and down, a hint of doubt flashing in his eyes: "What are you two doing here? This is not a safe place."

Before Xu Yuehuai could explain, Bai Yu spoke up first, saying, "We're lost. Why don't we come with you?"

The team leader hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded: "Okay. But you'll have to take care of yourselves; we don't have enough extra people to look after you."

Bai Yu then pulled Xu Yuehuai aside to help them.

Xu Yuehua frowned and said to Bai Yu in private, "Why did you agree to them? Aren't you afraid they're bad people?"

Bai Yu smiled faintly, "As long as they can take us out, we can separate then. Otherwise, how long will it take for the two of us to reach the capital on foot?"

Xu Yuehuai sighed and said nothing more. He knew Bai Yu's decision was correct; they did indeed need the help of the caravan to leave the mountains safely.

Although the caravan members were wary of them, they were generally friendly. They traveled together through the mountains and forests, stopping from time to time to rest and eat. However, just as they reached an open area, a sudden downpour began.

The torrential rain instantly enveloped the entire mountain forest in a misty haze. The caravan members scrambled to find shelter, and Xu Yuehuai and Bai Yu also found a relatively dry spot to stop.

The caravan members distributed their rations to everyone to stave off hunger. However, at that moment, poisonous insects suddenly approached.

These venomous insects were enormous and emitted a nauseating stench. They seemed to have been attracted by the torrential rain and were attacking the caravan members frantically.
