Chapter Forty-Eight: Enemy or Ally?

As the group of soldiers arrived, Qi Guze turned to look at Xu Yuehuai.

"You and Ah Qi, Lao Ma Shao, and the others be careful and continue making traps. I'll deal with this group of martial arts people. Don't worry, we'll be back soon."

Seeing Qi Guze about to leave, Xu Yuehuai's eyes were unfocused; she was too worried about Qi Guze.

Ironically, this worry seems to contain a certain fondness.

Could it be...?

Is it romantic love between a man and a woman?

The moment Xu Yuehuai thought of this, she couldn't help but shudder.

Neither of them spoke. In the silence, Xu Yuehuai leaned closer and took Qi Guze's hand.

"Brother Qi, please be careful." Qi Guze found it amusing. In the capital, both his parents had passed away, and only his mother would speak to him like this when she was alive. This girl, however, perfectly replicated his mother's every word and action.

Qi Guze thought again, if only he could take Xu Yuehuai to see his mother, but alas.

"Anything else?"

Qi Guze continued to ask.

A deep, indescribable pain and sorrow welled up in Xu Yuehuai's starry eyes, and she finally muttered, "I'll wait for you to come back."

"Wait for me to come back?" Qi Guze nodded. "Don't worry, I'll be back soon."

The two went their separate ways.

After everyone saw Gu Ze leave, they asked, "What should we do? What if they are all wiped out?"

"Shut up. Do you think they'll forgive us after we surrender? Don't you understand the principle of making an example of someone? If we go all out now, we still have a chance to survive. If we're all prepared to back down like you, we've already lost. Now that Brother Qi is gone, you'll follow my plans and arrangements."

"but……"

Someone muttered, "You're just a little girl; you're nowhere near as clever as Lord Qi."

"you……"

Xu Yuehuai was surprised that they thought highly of Qi Guze, but not of her at all. "Who says women are inferior to men? In ancient times there were Hua Mulan and Mu Guiying, and today we have Xu Yuehuai. Just wait and see."

Seeing Xu Yuehuai's restlessness and the others' skepticism towards her, Old Ma Shao immediately became unwilling.

"Damn it, it was Miss Xu who risked her life to bring us here. You're not only ungrateful, but now you're doubting her. Anyone who keeps spouting nonsense, I'll kill them. Today I'm in the mood. Killing good people is killing, killing bad people is killing, killing one is killing, killing two is killing. Now I'll wipe you all out."

At this point, Old Ma Shao stood behind Xu Yuehuai.

"I, Old Ma Shao, will listen to Miss Xu the most. If Miss Xu asks me to go through fire and water, I will do it."

Count me in.

"I will listen to whatever Miss Xu says."

Xu Yuehuai glanced gratefully at Old Ma Shao, "Uncle Ma, you...you're doing great! Let's quickly dig a trap and make some hidden weapons. They're all cavalry, and they're most afraid of this."

"Let's begin."

Xu Yuehuai arranged for Aqi and Lao Mashao to be in charge, and in no time they had set up quite a few traps.

At that moment, Wang Ping'an's soldier arrived. He was a bearded man. "You have rebelled today. Now surrender and I will not do anything to you. Drop your weapons."

"You're the ones who surrendered! You bunch of bastards, how many civilians have you harmed? You've captured all the able-bodied men from the surrounding villages! This is outrageous! Brothers, kill them!"

Qi Guze had trained them on the way, and the two armies faced off again.

The general-looking man hadn't expected everyone to be so powerful, and was quickly routed.

Upon seeing this, everyone realized that the cavalry battalion was nothing special, and they were no longer afraid.

Little did they know, this was entirely due to Qi Guze's excellent leadership.

At the age of thirteen, he went to Jiayuguan to guard the border. Three years later, he returned to the capital for the coming-of-age ceremony of the crown prince. After returning to the capital, he arranged many ambush battles, which drove the Rouran people to the foot of the Qilian Mountains and sent the Tubo people to the Yarlung Tsangpo River.

Qi Guze was a true tactician and a master strategist.

This is already a glimpse of what's to come.

The general was anxiously scratching his head. Although the opponent was not as strong as him, he was exceptionally powerful, and he seemed to be no match for him at all. Just then, countless sparks of fire flashed in the distant jungle.

The flickering, leaping spots of light were so far away that they seemed like the eyes of an endless array of foxes or hunting dogs. But when the spots of light drew closer, it became clear that they were a group of soldiers.

Upon seeing this, Xu Yuehuai hurriedly climbed the tree.

Ah Qi also climbed up from the other side. The two focused their gazes on the distance. Xu Yuehuai could hear his heart racing, and Ah Qi also became uneasy. He pointed to the distance.

"Oh no, can we handle this army of thousands?"

yes.

If this group of people were to attack, not to mention the three or five hundred farmers, even the seven or eight hundred well-trained soldiers would probably tremble with fear. The crowd also heard the sound of horses' hooves in the night, and everyone was stunned once again.

"We're surrounded by pursuers."

Someone shouted out.

The unrest began to spread, and everyone became vigilant and tense. Xu Yuehuai, however, understood that if she showed any weakness, the entire team would be in trouble. At that moment, she looked at Aqi.

"I'm going to lie."

"Let's tell everyone, these aren't pursuers, they're allies, right?" Ah Qi frowned. "But even if we say that, will they believe us?"

Whether they believe it or not is their business, but whether we do it or not is our business. This is the last resort; we have no other way out.

The two climbed down from the tree and saw Old Ma Shao, whose face was dark and grimy, from afar.

Clearly, a terrifying gloom had also descended upon Old Ma Shao's heart. If these soldiers were to attack, even a thousand troops would not be able to withstand them; they could be completely crushed into dust.

Xu Yuehuai looked at Old Ma Shao, her eyes seeming to be confirming something.

Old Ma Shao remained silent for a long, long time before finally speaking.

“I know what you’re going to say, but you still need credibility, so I’ll make the announcement.”

He understood that this lie could ruin his reputation and make him a target of public criticism, but how could Xu Yuehuai let Lao Mashao announce it?

She shuddered, but before she could say anything...

The old man was already shouting to the crowd.

"Please be patient, everyone. It's not the enemy who's here, but our allies. These are the people Lord Qi sent to rescue us. Don't worry, just wait here for a bit. But don't let your guard down at all. Be sure to stay safe. Everyone is on their own."

Everyone was relieved to hear this.

Everyone was exhausted. The moon in the sky had already tilted towards the jagged mountains in the west. Half of the long night had passed. I wonder if the next period of time will be peaceful?

Or perhaps, these ruthless soldiers would sweep over and devour them, leaving no one alive.
