Chapter 13: How come the city and the guardians are of the same lineage? In…
While Ethan was at the party, Starfall was idly reading a book, usually only recommending books he had already read to Ethan.
Over the long years, reading different books has been the only thing that has truly interested Xingyun.
Unfortunately, Xingyun recently found some books about workplace relationships and interpersonal interactions and was studying them when a speck of light flew in from somewhere.
Without even raising his head, Xingyun extinguished the light with a thought.
Then another one flew up, landed beside him, and started shouting, "Starfall! Starfall! It's a party, Starfall! You haven't had a party in 20 years..."
It kept calling out, but its voice wasn't loud, and its tone was like a child's, as if it were being affectionate, so it didn't sound noisy.
But Starfall wasn't human, and he found it very noisy.
Starfall turned another page of the book, and the light spot seemed to be choked, the sound stopped abruptly, and then it quickly disappeared.
"Starfall, starfall!" Another point of light appeared.
Xingyun finally realized something was wrong and looked up.
The alternate dimension was crammed full of countless points of light, moving without wind, numbering at least a hundred, illuminating the surrounding area.
Starfall: "..."
Don't we know each other very well? We're just acquaintances, aren't we?
I didn't even show any particular closeness to any of them; I treated everyone the same and ignored them all. It's just that I haven't had a get-together with you guys for a few years, and you act like I'm dead.
"Starfall, starfall—" The light spot was still dutifully trying to convey the message.
"...Understood." Xingyun closed the book, took a deep breath with her eyes closed, and felt her nameless anger subside: "I will participate."
So the points of light formed a giant heart shape and slowly dissipated. Before they completely disappeared, Starfall heard the voice laughing and leaving behind its last words: "Now, Starfall."
Starfall: "..."
Disgusting! Who did this? Was it that energetic blond guy, Kagerou? If you're so capable, never let him know for the rest of your life.
Xingyun's body transformed into several ravens, flapped their wings a few times, and disappeared into another dimension.
Almost instantly, the incarnation of Starfall flew into a dimly lit room, where several ravens collided and transformed into a grumpy-faced Starfall.
Of course, when hasn't he ever had a sour face?
In front of him was a large round table, where dozens of people were already seated, with only one empty seat left for him.
"Hi Starfall~" A blonde, blue-eyed, youthful girl greeted him from not far away, the chair behind her being the symbol of Yangyan City.
"How come I didn't know you guys had so much free time?" Xingyun casually pulled out a chair and sat down, ignoring Yangyan: "I thought we only gathered when we encountered a crisis that would destroy us all."
"Xingyun is really something. If we haven't been here for so long, our relationship might have grown distant." Yangyan wasn't annoyed by his neglect and playfully winked at Xingyun.
Xingyun made no attempt to hide her disgust. The last time she saw Yangyan, he was a burly man, but now, for some unknown reason, he had transformed into a little girl who looked like she was underage.
Everyone else is fixed in their gender and has a common body posture, so why are you the only one making such a fuss?
Seeing Xingyun's expression, Yangyan pretended to cry, covering her face. No one saw a single tear; they could only mutter, "Xingyun-chan is too cruel."
Novigrad, who appeared to be an intellectual woman, subtly shifted her position back without making any outward change.
Xingyun simply frowned in annoyance: "Who showed him Japanese anime?"
"Oh, come on, it's what I wanted to see." Kagerou dropped the pretense: "And it's 'her,' you know. I'm a girl now."
Xingyun silently turned her head away without responding to her.
As far as I can remember, he and Yang Yan, back then he didn't seem to be called Yang Yan yet, anyway, when their relationship was bad, they would fight each other.
No matter how disheveled they looked, they were all deeply imprinted on each other's minds. They killed each other countless times, their blood staining the ground red. Other avatars of will tried to break up the fight but couldn't, and were even killed by mistake.
Some joined in out of anger, but were later killed and forced to quit, only able to watch. In short, he and Yang Yan did not have a good relationship before.
So now it seems that Yang Yan isn't mentally ill. Xing Yun thinks he's always had something wrong with his head, and now he's just deliberately trying to disgust him.
"Alright, I'll stop teasing you." Yang Yan's figure twisted a few times, transforming into a man in his early twenties, the only things that remained unchanged were his blond hair, blue eyes, and the incongruous sunlight in the room.
Xingyun felt that Yangyan was really disgusting to him.
"How rude of me, I didn't turn into a girl to disgust you." Yang Yan saw through Xing Yun's thoughts and smiled. "It's because my current guardian is very interesting. He seems like the kind of person who has one-night stands often, but he's actually a kind-hearted person, especially soft-hearted towards minors and women."
At this moment, almost all the city's wills were united in the thought: "That guy's guardian is really pitiful."
So, it's because his guardian seems like a very romantic person, but is actually a good person, that he deliberately transformed into a girl to tease him? Does he mean he enjoys watching his guardian being flirted with? That can't be right, when did he become a pervert?
How pitiful, the guardian of Yangyan City.
"Speaking of guardians," Novigrad cleverly changed the subject, "I also really like my current guardian."
"Right, right?" Yang Yan echoed in an approving tone, as if he had finally found someone with whom he shared a common interest.
Novigrad City, Starfall remembers that the current leader of the Guardian Alliance is her guardian, I forgot her name, I think she was a woman.
Novigrad and the Will of the Sun were already quite close, being good friends, and coincidentally, their respective guardians were now supporting and cooperating in managing the Guardian Alliance.
“She’s resilient, tenacious, intelligent, and a great strategist, but she’s just too busy.” Novigrad sighed as he thought of his Guardian, whom he saw less and less these days. “How can the Alliance have so many things going on? My Guardian isn’t getting any rest these days either; I’m afraid she’ll suddenly die.”
It's truly exhausting not having the chance to be a leader like her, with her busy schedule, battle damage, casualties, public relations, and a whole host of documents to review.
“It’s like this.” A red-haired woman said, her voice falling. “You must make sure she gets some rest.”
Starfall remembers her, Arcadia Port. Her previous guardian was the leader of the previous generation, but he didn't die in battle; he died suddenly by accident.
Each city has a different will and strength. Some cities can't even resurrect people. Some rely on pure technology, some on pure power, and Starfall is a magic-based city.
"I will." Novigrad knew about her situation and didn't know how to comfort the still dejected Arcadia, so he could only give a dry reply: "How is your current Guardian?"
“Alive, loves to eat, quite sensible, I don’t have to worry about her,” Arcadia said succinctly.
Although the city's will always favors its guardians, it's clear that she prefers her previous guardian, who truly represents her pain.
Unable to let go for a long time, Arcadia found the cause of death—sudden death—to be too hasty and ridiculous. It took him quite some time to change the days when he was constantly thinking about his ex and feeling sad.
“My guardian is very good too.” Vidaris, whose green hair was braided into a side braid, spoke softly. When she saw the other wills looking at her, a shy blush rose on her face. She unconsciously fiddled with the flower tucked into her braid and said in a soft voice, “Although he looks a bit fierce and his temper is easily out of control, for example, he will get angry and yell at people when he sees someone injured, but after he finishes yelling, he will still heal them one by one. He is a good boy.”
It's like a treatment for a fiery temper. Vidaris is a city with a rather mild and shy nature, but its guardian happens to be someone who sounds like he has a fiery temper, and is quite handsome, the kind of person who could easily infuriate his guardian.
Because of his overly hesitant and indecisive personality, Vidaris once had an impatient guardian who drove the other person to the brink of collapse.
When the guardian was in a calm state, he commented that Vidaris was a very good city lord, both in terms of ability and conduct, but too slow-paced, and even if he offended her, he would not get angry, but would apologize instead.
You really can't let someone with an impatient personality and someone with a slow-paced personality spend a lot of time together, and someone who is easily angered is even worse.
Even if Vidalis keeps backing down, it won't work. If Vidalis keeps backing down, it will eventually trigger the other party's tipping point... Vidalis once had a guardian like this, so the other city wills can only hope that she can always choose a guardian whose personality is compatible with hers.
“My Tenas-chan is super nice too—” Kagerou chimed in, “He seems frivolous, accepting every girl’s business card he gets, but he’s actually a good kid who can’t refuse them outright, so he just accepts them and then secretly throws them away later~”
"And another thing, I feel like my guardian inherited all my traits." Yang Yan smiled and listed them off: "Sunny and enthusiastic, though sometimes that's mistaken for flirting. Gentle, I don't think I have that, I don't know where I inherited it from. Soft-hearted, especially towards children, like how I'm soft-hearted towards Xingyun-chan~"
Xingyun thought Yangyan was a truly extraordinary person. Xingyun hadn't felt nauseous for a long time.
Yang Yan was too enthusiastic and kind; he felt a bit nauseous. So, what did he have to do with this?
Other city will incarnations: "?"
Your enthusiasm, you do have an inescapable enthusiasm, but it's an unsettling kind of enthusiasm.
You're quite self-aware; you don't actually have a gentle personality.
Soft-hearted? You're specifically referring to Xingyun? Your relationship has only eased a little in the last few centuries, unlike before when you were always fighting head-on. But look at your crazy behavior back then, where is the soft-heartedness?
You'd love to actually kill Xingyun, yet you're still soft-hearted.
Although Starfall really wants you to die.
"Oh, right, Xingyun-chan." Yangyan tossed the conversation to Xingyun: "Why don't you ever talk about your guardian?"
A note from the author:
----------------------
Starfall and Sunfire don't get along. They used to fight each other to the death, but now they only fight when they're angry. In the early days, the cities were constantly fighting and killing each other to get along.
Kagerou City = Warm and hospitable. Novigrad = Wisdom [City of the current leader of the Guardians]. Arcadia = Symbol of utopia [But also of assassins]. Velidas = Symbol of vitality [Has unconsciously driven his own Guardians mad several times]. Starfall, as its name suggests, was initially conceived as Ethan being Selene's star, and then his surname being the moon… [Taking the blame and running away]
If you feel that the Ethan I wrote in the previous text seems like a child, that's because I set Ethan to be 14 before raising him, and even the character card for the "Old Man" commissioned by me was filled in as 14. My "motherly" filter really doesn't feel that way. I would even subtract ten years to make him four years old, but because the plot required me to raise him to 18, I really think he's a very cute baby.
Incidentally, Xingyun read those social books on getting along with colleagues, but like Ethan, it was still useless. Ethan couldn't apply them, but Xingyun didn't consider the other cities as colleagues at all; she only saw them as cities she had met in the early days of fierce fighting, and she single-handedly isolated all of them.
P.S.: Yang Yan did intentionally try to disgust him. She even disguised herself as a girl to harass Xing Yun, and was killed ten times, although Xing Yun also died several times.
And to the readers who have seen this post twice in a row, I only feel better when there's interaction; it really boosts my creative drive.
Also, even if I start other novels while this one is still being serialized, I will mainly focus on updating this one, unless the other novels do well in terms of data. In that case, I will alternate between updating this one and updating that one, trying to distribute my updates evenly.
