Chapter 199 The Little Monster's Revenge
Before Ning Wanwan appeared, the little boy had a furrowed brow and seemed quite agitated. But the moment Ning Wanwan appeared, his dark eyes stared straight at him, and a big smile appeared on his face.
The mangled remains beneath its feet seemed to hold no interest for it; their deaths were insignificant. Only the human girl before it could capture its attention.
"..."
Ning Wanwan's mind went blank, and she instinctively took a few steps back.
Then, she vomited.
"Don't come any closer!"
She vomited violently for a while, her usually soft and gentle voice showing such resistance for the first time.
"Wanwan..." The little monster jumped off the table and was walking towards her impatiently, but when he saw her reaction, he stopped in his tracks, somewhat at a loss.
Ning Wanwan took a breath, raised her eyes, and said coldly, "Don't come near me."
The little monster didn't understand what it had done wrong, but realized that it seemed it had indeed done something wrong, and stood there blankly.
It gazed at her longingly, calling softly, "Wanwan, Wanwan..."
It had indeed been constantly taught by Ning Wanwan not to eat people or kill them. Did it remember? Of course it remembered. But all of this was contingent on it being able to be with Ning Wanwan.
Nothing takes precedence over this.
That's the logic of the little monster.
Ning Wanwan's groggy mind cleared up a little, and the little monster's obedient behavior of not approaching gave her enough time to process the situation.
She looked at the corpses at the little monster's feet. Clearly, the little monster was responsible for the research institute's quietness.
It killed...the entire research institute.
Ning Wanwan even caught a glimpse of the research institute director's face amidst the scattered corpses. The director, who always wielded power, was always at ease in her presence, issuing orders that appeared gentle but were in fact utterly unquestionable.
But now, his face, which had been so composed, was contorted with terror, his eyes wide open, clearly indicating that he hadn't expected this to happen before he died.
Ning Wanwan didn't want to think about how powerful the little monster was, or why it didn't resist when she was experimented on before. She also didn't want to think about whether she would be killed if she angered it now.
She was just a little... slow to react.
All of this happened so suddenly.
But she truly didn't want to face this little monster anymore. All that so-called guidance, looking at this pile of corpses now, was a complete joke.
“I’m not feeling sorry for these people…” Ning Wanwan suddenly spoke, it was unclear whether she was talking to the little monster or to herself.
She was certainly not feeling sorry for these people.
Although she hadn't been at the research institute for a particularly long time, the various events that had happened had already made Ning Wanwan realize that these scumbags would stop at nothing for experiments and profits, including conducting human experiments and sacrificing lives.
What distressed her was that she clearly understood that the little monster harbored no hatred towards them and was not seeking revenge, yet it still killed them in the blink of an eye.
The rule he had repeatedly emphasized was that killing was forbidden.
Ning Wanwan realized that her attempt to tame him had probably failed.
She couldn't tame such a capricious, instinct-driven monster.
It cannot be killed, nor can it be tamed.
The last glimmer of hope she held in her heart was shattered, and Ning Wanwan's eyes went unfocused for a moment before she fell into a daze.
What else can we do?
"Wanwan, Wanwan..." Ning Wanwan ignored it and didn't even look at it. The little monster became agitated and kept calling out, but it didn't dare to disobey Ning Wanwan's words and remained standing in place.
Ning Wanwan's gaze refocused on the little monster.
She slowly smiled at it.
Just as the little monster showed a joyful expression, thinking that Ning Wanwan had forgiven it, and wanted to pounce on it and act cute, Ning Wanwan spoke softly.
“I don’t want to stay here anymore,” she said. “I want to go back to reality.”
A familiar crackling sound of electricity came to mind.
[I'm sure I want to go back]
Ning Wanwan let out a breath, her feelings complicated: "As expected, System, you're still here."
"You're the one who orchestrated all of this, aren't you?"
[Not really, I just really want to know what you'd do.] The system said, [Staying here might be safer for you, and it will protect you too.]
"No." Ning Wanwan refused without hesitation.
Clearly, she didn't want to stay with an untamable little monster forever.
"System, can you take me away from here?"
[...Of course, if you want to do it that way.]
"Okay, then I need to get back to reality immediately." She didn't want to stay in this space filled with the smell of blood and dampness for even a second longer.
"Wanwan!"
The little monster sensed something was wrong and pounced on it hastily.
But it was too late; the spot was already empty.
The little monster circled around in frustration, searching for any familiar scent, but the human girl seemed to have vanished into thin air, leaving no trace.
"Wanwan—"
"Waaah, Wanwan—"
"Slap, slap... Wanwan—"
The shouts echoed in the empty space. The little monster seemed to have forgotten how to speak, and it kept calling out without eating or drinking.
It waited patiently and obediently in the same spot, thinking that this would bring the girl to it.
But it was no use.
...
Ning Wanwan closed her eyes, and the familiar feeling of weightlessness came over her.
When she opened her eyes again, the system hadn't lied to her; she had returned to reality.
Qi Lin and Zhou Yanyao, who were looking in one direction, were shocked to notice that Wanwan had returned.
They had many wounds and blood on their bodies, and their clothes and hair were disheveled. Clearly, they had gone through more than one fierce battle since Ning Wanwan left.
A deep sense of guilt welled up in Ning Wanwan's heart. She lowered her head and whispered, "I'm sorry, I failed..." She had neither killed the beast king nor tamed it.
"It doesn't matter."
Zhou Yanyao snapped out of his daze, a wide smile spreading across his face. He instinctively tried to reassure her, "It's good that Wanwan is safe. These kinds of things are inherently difficult to succeed at. It's just..."
But why did they have to come back at this particular time?
Didn't they say we could stay there and live there indefinitely?
Now, ironically, is the most dangerous time...
Suddenly, the ground shook violently, and the two of them looked anxious, as if facing a formidable enemy.
Qi Lin immediately grabbed Ning Wanwan and tried to leave first: "I must take you to a safe place first."
Ning Wanwan felt her head spinning. She leaned her upper body on Qi Lin's arm, trying to suppress her dizziness, and realized something.
"Is the 'King' of the beasts about to awaken?"
Qi Lin nodded. "Don't be afraid, we will protect you."
"Hurry up!" Zhou Yanyao urged.
But it seemed too late. The crack in the ground suddenly accelerated, and a huge, black, shiny monster, like a puddle of gelatinous substance, burst out from underground. In the blink of an eye, spiderweb-like liquid spread in all directions, as if it had no intention of letting any creature escape.
This is the "Emperor" of the strange beasts that they have been wary of for so long!
This space was no longer easy to leave, so Qi Lin and Zhou Yanyao had to temporarily place Ning Wanwan in a relatively safe corner before going to attack the monster together.
Besides them, there were many other people, and Ning Wanwan saw many familiar faces among them.
As expected of the villainous big boss, basically all the main characters from the book are here...
Ning Wanwan realized that she actually had time to think about all sorts of things at this moment.
The system's voice echoed in my mind: "[Don't worry about them dying.]"
Ning Wanwan was stunned for a moment: "The protagonist shouldn't die, right..."
The system gave an ambiguous chuckle.
That was in the past. Now... it's hard to say.
Ning Wanwan wanted to ask more questions, but the system had already fallen silent.
She was somewhat uneasy, her eyes fixed on the battle. Qi Lin and his men were fighting a desperate battle against the awakened alien beasts; blood and flesh were flying everywhere, the scene was brutal.
As Ning Wanwan looked at it, she felt that the Beast King did look somewhat familiar. It was probably the same little monster she encountered when she transmigrated. She didn't expect it to grow so big now.
It also became more ferocious and terrifying. The intense sense of oppression was enough to make ordinary people tremble.
I'm afraid this monster won't even remember me, after all, so many years have passed, I'm a time traveler, but the other one isn't.
How could they possibly remember a tiny, ordinary human being?
Just as Ning Wanwan was thinking this, the Beast King, who was locked in a fierce battle, suddenly made a cunning feint, and then, just when everyone thought he was going to continue fighting—
It rushed over, grabbed Ning Wanwan from the side, and ran away!
Ning Wanwan:
Everyone else: !!!
"Stop! Put her down!!" Numerous voices roared from behind, but the Beast King ignored them completely, wrapping Ning Wanwan tightly inside its body.
Ning Wanwan was in a daze the whole way, and she thought in disbelief that she had been kidnapped!
When Ning Wanwan opened her eyes, she thought she would be torn to pieces, but she was still lying on a soft bed in a room that could be considered comfortable from a human perspective.
The monster remained motionless by the bed, "watching" her.
After a brief standoff, Ning Wanwan finally couldn't help but speak first: "What...what do you want to do?"
The monster's glossy black body flowed downwards, as if it was about to unleash a powerful attack, and Ning Wanwan couldn't help but shrink back even further.
Then she saw that the monster in front of her had turned into a boy with delicate features, and she could still vaguely see the familiar shadow of her childhood.
This was such a stark contrast to the monsters they had encountered before that Ning Wanwan was stunned for quite a while.
Then she watched as the little monster, now transformed into a boy, approached her slowly with a cold face and fierce eyes.
"What I'm going to do is, of course, to get revenge on you and toy with you."
"You haven't forgotten all the terrible things you did to me back then, have you?"
His hand pressed against the wall behind Ning Wanwan, and his body pressed down, forcing Ning Wanwan to shrink further in, and he better contained her within his arm's reach.
Ning Wanwan could feel the simulated human breathing he was giving her, but it was also cold.
"...excessive things"
After thinking for a long time, the only excessive thing Ning Wanwan could think of was to obey the researchers and cut his body with a knife.
...This description seems rather excessive.
Seeing that the other person's almost entire body was about to cover her, Ning Wanwan let out a soft "uh" and had no choice but to place her hands on his chest.
...What exactly is this supposed to do?
If you're going to talk, talk properly. If you're going to take revenge, take revenge properly. Do you really have to get this close?
