Chapter 5 The protagonist's good brother
Ning Wanwan was startled by the sudden question; she hadn't expected anyone to strike up a conversation with her in a breakfast shop.
She glanced up slightly and quickly. The boy was tall and had his back to the door, blocking the light. All she could see was that he was wearing the same school uniform as her.
They're students from the same school, no wonder she's called classmate.
Ning Wanwan answered softly, "No one is sitting here."
She only glanced at him before immediately lowering her head to continue eating her steamed bun, so she didn't notice Zhou Yanyao's stunned expression as he looked down at her.
Zhou Yanyao stood there for a few seconds, his ears gradually turning a faint blush.
He paused, then sat down, but instead of sitting at the empty table on the other side, he sat next to Ning Wanwan.
"Are you also a student at A High School?" Zhou Yanyao asked Ning Wanwan with a bright smile, as if they were just having a casual chat.
Ning Wanwan had been tense ever since he sat down next to her. It took her a while to realize that the boy was probably talking to her.
To confirm this, she glanced at him again, meeting Zhou Yanyao's gaze. This time, Ning Wanwan finally saw his face clearly.
He had a short, dark buzz cut, honey-colored skin, and his hair was still damp with sweat. His smile, however, was refreshing. The zipper of his school uniform jacket was open, revealing a slightly see-through sports vest underneath, damp with sweat.
In short, he's the kind of athletic student who gives off a very energetic and strong vibe at first glance, and he's definitely the kind with a sunny and cheerful personality who's popular with both boys and girls.
Now, he is looking at her with focused, smiling eyes, appearing very patient, as if he won't give up until he gets her answer.
Even if this question is actually meaningless.
What's more, Ning Wanwan hasn't even answered such a simple question for him yet.
When he noticed Ning Wanwan looking at him, his eyes seemed to light up slightly, and his smile became even brighter and more cheerful, revealing a set of big white teeth.
Ning Wanwan paused subtly for a few seconds, then quickly looked away as if she had been burned.
“Yes,” she said softly.
I have a feeling that it looks a bit like a big dog.
Ning Wanwan had never owned a dog, but in her original world, she had seen her neighbor's Golden Retriever. That big dog looked tall and strong, quite intimidating, and its tail would wag as soon as it saw her, as if it wanted to pounce on her and lick her face.
It's not that this boy is as harmless as a golden retriever... but there's a strange resemblance.
"I'm also from A High School, what a coincidence!" Big Dog seemed oblivious to her coldness and continued to relentlessly strike up a conversation.
Ning Wanwan munched on the steamed bun in her hand while staring at the steamed buns in the bag, as if there was something interesting about these ordinary white steamed buns.
After a brief silence, feeling that she might have been impolite, she whispered back, "Yes."
The girl kept her head down and ate without looking at him, but Zhou Yanyao was not discouraged. His gaze followed her and fell on the steamed bun in her hand, as if he were deep in thought.
Then he stood up and left.
Ning Wanwan thought he had left the store or changed seats, but to her surprise, he returned quickly and sat down next to her again.
At the same time, a bottle of warm milk was placed in front of her.
Ning Wanwan was slightly taken aback and subconsciously turned to look at him.
He was also propping his head up to look at her, and when he saw her looking over, he immediately flashed a big smile.
"Eating this might be a bit dry, so you should have something to drink."
He didn't ask her why she only ate steamed buns for breakfast, but simply gave her a drink.
Ning Wanwan pursed her lips and declined, "Thank you, but it's alright."
Seeing that Zhou Yanyao was about to say something, she immediately added, "I brought water."
She also took out the water bottle from her schoolbag and drank it sip by sip.
The cup was bought by the original owner; it was a very bright color and covered with all sorts of flashy, glittery stickers, which was completely out of character for Ning Wanwan.
However, Ning Wanwan only cared about things that worked. Even the most extravagant cup was only needed when drinking water, and could be kept in her bag so it wouldn't attract attention. Therefore, Ning Wanwan used it directly.
At this moment, Ning Wanwan was really afraid that Zhou Yanyao would ask her why she would use such an un-student-like cup.
She couldn't give any reason either.
Fortunately, Zhou Yanyao only glanced at the blindingly bright cup a few times, touched his chin, and looked at Ning Wanwan a few times, without asking any further questions.
“But it’s better to drink warm milk in the morning.” He enthusiastically pushed the milk towards Ning Wanwan again, “I’ve already bought it.”
Because of his movement, his upper body was closer to Ning Wanwan, and Ning Wanwan could even feel that his body temperature was higher than that of ordinary people.
Even though there was a little distance between them, that vibrant and intense aura seemed to envelop her.
Ning Wanwan instinctively leaned her body to the other side, her brows furrowing slightly.
Too, too close!
"Sorry!" The boy quickly noticed Ning Wanwan's discomfort and hurriedly stepped back a little. Looking at Ning Wanwan's expression, he scratched his head, seemingly at a loss.
Ning Wanwan shook her head: "It's nothing."
She sensed that this boy wasn't as carefree as he appeared on the surface.
Or rather, he is actually meticulous despite his rough exterior, even to the point of being overly meticulous.
This is undeniably a contrast...
But no matter what, his intention to strike up a conversation with her was far too obvious, so obvious that he didn't even try to hide it.
Ning Wanwan had absolutely no desire to get involved with strangers, especially someone who looked anything but ordinary.
She put the half-eaten steamed bun into a plastic bag, held it in her hand, and was about to leave when Zhou Yanyao subconsciously stood up as well.
Where are you going?
“…Go to school.” Even Ning Wanwan, who was socially awkward, felt a little speechless.
Zhou Yanyao realized he had asked a silly question and quickly tried to salvage the situation: "What I meant was, could I ask which class you're in?"
Ning Wanwan didn't say anything, quickly shook her head, slung her backpack over her shoulder as if trying to avoid the breakfast shop, and hurriedly ran out.
Given Zhou Yanyao's speed, he could catch up in just a few steps if he wanted to.
But if I start arguing again at this point, I'll definitely be disliked...
"Sigh." Zhou Yanyao scratched his hair in frustration, picked up the milk that Ning Wanwan hadn't touched on the table, and casually picked up his untouched breakfast in his other hand, then walked out of the breakfast shop dejectedly.
It looked like a dejected big dog.
"It's okay, there will be other opportunities. We're in the same school, so we'll definitely meet again in the future..."
He muttered to himself.
"Try to do better next time."
...
Ning Wanwan was walking down the street when she asked the system, "Was that a character from the story just now?"
"Huh?" The system, which was secretly catching up on sleep, responded with a confused voice, then, slightly more awake, "I'll go check..."
Ning Wanwan slowly ate the half-eaten steamed bun, looking around at her surroundings as she walked towards the school.
The weather was lovely today. Although it wasn't fully light yet, there was no rain or smog. Students and office workers hurried along the streets, creating a simple yet peaceful scene of life.
But Ning Wanwan knew that this peaceful and normal life wouldn't last long.
This caused Ning Wanwan, who longed for a peaceful life, to feel an indescribable sadness.
But thinking about it all is useless. After all, the system has already said that she is just an ordinary person with no special abilities or talents. The only thing she can do is to ensure her own survival while trying her best to maintain the protagonist's career and love life.
【Found him! He's definitely not an ordinary person!】The system started screaming like a chicken again.
He's the male lead's best friend!
