Chapter 8: Hiding from the Male Lead

Chapter 8: Hiding from the Male Lead

Ning Wanwan stood frozen in place.

In that instant, a scene flashed through her mind: how the male protagonist in the world's storyline fought his way up to the throne of gods, stepping over bloody corpses.

In short, even disregarding her status as the protagonist, she is a ruthless person whom she absolutely cannot afford to offend.

The voice behind the "classmate" was low and calm, but seemed to be mixed with a hint of doubt because of Ning Wanwan's stiffness.

Ning Wanwan didn't dare turn her head, and whispered, "Okay." She slowly moved to the side, then turned her back to the male lead and quickly ran into the corner of the rows of shelves, disappearing from sight.

Qi Lin watched this scene with a strange feeling rising in his heart.

When did he become so scary? He just asked the other person to move aside, and his tone was polite, yet he scared the person so much that they didn't dare to turn around and ran away immediately.

But the girl's voice was very soft and gentle; if he hadn't had good hearing, he might not have been able to hear what she was saying.

He didn't remember anyone he knew who had that voice or that personality.

That's far too timid.

Given Qi Lin's impoverished family background and his quiet, bookish personality, there were practically no people in school who would be afraid of him, if not extremely rare.

Qi Lin suddenly felt an inexplicable urge to see the other person's face, to see who this person was that could be so frightened by a simple sentence from him.

"Qi Lin, you haven't finished shopping yet?" Zhou Yanyao walked over, patted his shoulder, and curiously peeked in the direction of his gaze.

"What are you looking at?" He stroked his chin and grinned mischievously. "Not looking at some girl, are you?"

Qi Lin calmly withdrew the foot he had taken a step forward, his face expressionless: "Don't assume that just because you fell in love at first sight this morning, you're the same way about everyone else."

Zhou Yanyao, unfazed by the mockery, retorted, "You're only thinking this way now because you don't know what it feels like to love someone. You won't say this when you have someone you like in the future."

Qi Lin remained expressionless, completely disapproving of what he said.

He held a few loaves of bread nearing their expiration date in his hand, completely ignoring the stares of others: "I wonder who it was that was shouting just a few days ago, 'I have no love in my heart, only exercise and studying!' Probably some idiot."

"Hey, are you making fun of me? You definitely are!" Zhou Yanyao was shocked and began to regret that he had been absent-minded that morning and couldn't help but tell his best friend about this sweet trouble.

Qi Lin: "Heh." A rare look of disdain appeared on his usually calm face.

It's like you're making it seem like no one will notice if you don't say anything.

He looked so heartbroken over love, he didn't even try to hide it, it would be a miracle if you didn't.

Forget about being love-struck.

On the other side.

Ning Wanwan stood at the corner of the shelf and vaguely heard a conversation between the two of them, where they were arguing back and forth without any politeness, but their relationship was obviously quite good.

"These two are indeed very good friends."

Of course, the plot won't go wrong. They remain good brothers and friends throughout the story, fighting side by side many times, and never betraying each other no matter how tempting the opportunity.

Ning Wanwan quite likes this kind of friendship based on mutual trust.

"Host, I can do it!" the system eagerly raised its hand. "After all, in this world, we have the most inseparable and intimate relationship!"

"I feel like we're more like grasshoppers on the same rope," Ning Wanwan complained, but she was in a good mood.

As the conversation between Qi Lin and Zhou Yanyao gradually faded away, Ning Wanwan did not intend to go out immediately.

[Speaking of which, why are you avoiding the male lead?]

"The secret to surviving in a high-risk world is to avoid contact with key figures unless absolutely necessary," Ning Wanwan said seriously.

Really? But I think you're more like a socially anxious person...

Ning Wanwan: "...Shut up."

Imagine you're faced with someone you know is incredibly capable, yet you're completely different from them. You don't know how to communicate with them, and you're even afraid to be around them, while they don't know you. So, as a severely socially anxious and inept individual, is it wrong for you to instinctively want to run away and avoid any potential interaction?

No problem at all!

As Ning Wanwan thought this, her initially timid heart gradually became more righteous.

She's definitely not the only one who did this!

Not planning to leave immediately, Ning Wanwan looked at the shelves, keeping an eye out for nail clippers that Lin Ruowei needed, and also for anything she might need in the future.

Or anything under 81 cents is fine.

Her gaze fell on the bottom, where the essential item in supermarkets on campuses from elementary to university was placed—spicy strips!

[Host, the price of spicy strips has gone up; the cheapest pack costs one yuan.]

Ning Wanwan silently put the spicy strips back, lamenting how money is becoming increasingly worthless in this world.

"If I were to win the 'instant wealth' prize, I would definitely buy a ton of snacks and stock up at home! I could eat whatever I wanted and play on my phone until the end of time."

[Host, you're too easily satisfied.]

“You don’t understand how wonderful this is.” Ning Wanwan shook her head, then looked up and suddenly noticed a bag of spicy fish for 80 cents on the shelf against the wall.

This price is absolutely perfect!

Ning Wanwan's eyes lit up, and she tried to reach for it, but sadly discovered that for some reason, the snack was placed too high, making it difficult for her to reach.

"Shouldn't food be placed where it's most easily accessible? That's so illogical!"

There weren't many people around this corner, so Ning Wanwan felt a bit carefree. She looked up at it for a while, not quite happy, and then reached out to grab it with increasing determination.

Just when it was almost over, the light overhead was suddenly blocked by a shadow.

The small bag of snacks with a picture of a staring little fish was picked up by the other hand.

"What a coincidence, we meet again."

Hearing that familiar, cheerful voice, Ning Wanwan turned her head and, as expected, saw Zhou Yanyao's face.

He looked down at Ning Wanwan's raised face and grinned, revealing a big, seemingly innocent smile.

Ning Wanwan felt embarrassed and instinctively turned her face away, pretending to look at the shelf. She stared at the remaining small bag of spicy fish and stared at the wide-eyed cartoon fish for a few seconds before realizing that her reaction was really impolite.

She mentally prepared herself, then turned back, but this time she didn't look up. Instead, she lowered her gaze, avoiding his eyes: "It is quite a coincidence..."

Why did Zhou Yanyao suddenly appear?

But since everyone's here to shop at the supermarket, it seems perfectly normal for them to wander around here...

My dodging movement just now seemed too obvious; it really wasn't a good idea, considering he was quite friendly to me this morning…

Thinking of this, Ning Wanwan made up for it by asking a pointless question as a polite excuse: "You're here too? Are you here to buy something?"

That was close! It almost got stuck!

The girl's voice was very low, easily missed if you didn't listen carefully. Zhou Yanyao, who had been paying attention to the girl's reaction, did not miss her words. It was just a small response that didn't even look at him, but Zhou Yanyao's eyes suddenly lit up!

"Oh yeah, you're here to buy something too, what a coincidence... Were you thinking of taking this or that?"

As Zhou Yanyao spoke, he became somewhat flustered. Suddenly remembering something, he handed the small fish snacks to Ning Wanwan.

He could easily get along with anyone normally, but now, despite his strong and urgent desire to win someone's favor, he was incredibly awkward, afraid that he might do something wrong and cause the girl to run away without hesitation, just like she did in the breakfast shop that morning.

Ning Wanwan noticed a bag of spicy fish in her lowered gaze. After staring at the staring fish logo on the bag for a few seconds, she took it.

"Thank you," she said softly.

Unbeknownst to the girl, Zhou Yanyao's exceptional eyesight was being used almost greedily to capture her every single movement.
