He Chaoyang wasn't about to let Chen Shuning jump back on her own. He quickly nodded to Feng Baoguo and chased after Chen Shuning.
He Chaoyang caught up with Chen Shuning and picked him up from behind.
He explained with a grin, "Don't be angry. I was careful. I didn't dare pick up too many. It was just two pieces of dried wood, not even as heavy as you. It didn't take much effort and wouldn't worsen your injury, really."
Chen Shuning was already worried about his injuries, and now that he was being held in his arms, she naturally didn't dare to struggle. She could only glare angrily at He Chaoyang, and keep complaining in her heart, "Who said I was too thin and needed to eat to be healthy? How come today I'm heavier than two pieces of wood that look so thick?"
So one of them sulked and brooded, while the other coaxed her with a smile.
Chen Shuning ignored He Chaoyang until the two returned to Chen Shuning's small house.
Finally, He Chaoyang couldn't take it anymore and promised with a pleading look, "Don't be angry, okay? I promise I won't go up the mountain again until my injury heals, alright?"
Chen Shuning knew that He Chaoyang was worried that he didn't have enough firewood, so Chen Shuning wasn't really angry with him, but just worried about his injury.
Having received He Chaoyang's assurance, Chen Shuning stopped pressuring the matter.
He shoved the two bowls of meatballs and fried sweet potatoes into He Chaoyang's hands and said in a deep voice, "You're being punished to deliver these to the families inside. Deliver one bowl to each family. Come back and get the rest after you've delivered these two bowls."
Seeing that the little girl had finally spoken to him, He Chaoyang breathed a sigh of relief, smiled and responded before taking the bowl and leaving the room.
This time, Chen Shuning even prepared a portion for Yang Wanqiu, since she was also a member of the educated youth compound.
He Chaoyang wasn't an educated youth, so it wasn't really appropriate for him to stay here. That's why Chen Shuning specially prepared food for everyone, so naturally Yang Wanqiu's share wasn't left out.
While waiting for He Chaoyang to deliver the gifts, Chen Shuning also received some return gifts one after another.
Wang Chunni and Xu Laidi made cornbread pancakes this morning, knowing that Chen Shuning liked them, so they sent over a few.
The old house sent a small dish of cold wild vegetables, along with other food from other people.
Of course, it's not as good as the fried meatballs and fried sweet potatoes that Chen Shuning sent out. Nowadays, it's hard for people to even eat oily food, and fried food is usually only made during the Chinese New Year.
So everyone accepted Chen Shuning's favor, which was tantamount to tacitly agreeing to He Chaoyang staying there.
When He Chaoyang returned, a lot of things were already laid out on the dining table.
After the two had a hearty breakfast, He Chaoyang cautiously looked at Chen Shuning and asked, "Shuning, you have a lot of firewood in your woodshed, but it's not enough to burn for the whole winter, so I was thinking..."
Before He Chaoyang could finish speaking, Chen Shuning interrupted him firmly: "No, you just promised me you wouldn't go up the mountain."
Seeing the little girl suddenly bristle, He Chaoyang couldn't help but smile wryly. He Chaoyang had never listened to his parents since he was a child; the only person in the family who would listen to him was his grandfather.
Who would have thought that he would be completely controlled by a little girl, and he wouldn't even have the slightest temper?
Seeing the little girl's face gradually darken, He Chaoyang quickly explained, "I'm not going. I promised you I wouldn't go, and I promise I won't. I just wanted to say that I wanted to go to town later to see if I could buy some wooden tripods."
The Daqing Mountains in winter aren't as safe as they look. What if you, a young girl, encounter danger while climbing them? If I don't prepare everything for you, my unit won't feel at ease."
Upon hearing this, Chen Shuning's expression, which had just darkened, instantly brightened, realizing that He Chaoyang was thinking of her.
She just didn't want to be a parasitic vine dependent on a man. She could actually handle these things herself, but she just didn't want to tell He Chaoyang how.
You know, as long as she goes up the mountain once, she can bring back almost all the firewood for the whole winter. Her spatial ability is no joke.
But she couldn't say a word about it, though she still objected, saying, "Even if it's not enough to burn for the whole winter, it won't make a difference if it's just for a few more days. Once my foot is better, I can go to town to buy it myself. I can't go up the mountain, but there's no danger in town, right? Don't worry, I can buy it myself."
Chen Shuning thought that he should deliver some goods to Hei Zi in a few days, so he planned to go to town, as well as to his home and his older brother and sister's place, and send them some more things.
He Chaoyang thought that made sense, but he didn't want the little girl to buy it herself; he figured it wouldn't make a difference if she bought it in a couple of days.
Thinking that he had just made the little girl angry that morning, He Chaoyang didn't argue with Chen Shuning and readily agreed.
After breakfast, He Chaoyang first washed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen with Chen Shuning, and then helped Chen Shuning into the house to rest.
He himself went to the brigade headquarters with the other educated youth to help Chen Shuning collect grain.
Having nothing to do while being ordered to stay at home, Chen Shuning sat on the kang (a heated brick bed) with his eyes closed, checking the inventory in his spatial storage.
During this period, Chen Shuning had stored up a lot more watches, bed sheets and duvet covers in his space. This time, in addition to these, Chen Shuning also took out the fabric hair accessories and leather covers that he hadn't taken out last time.
With the Lunar New Year just around the corner, these little items should sell well.
After preparing everything for the next operation, Chen Shuning withdrew his mental energy from the space.
Looking outside, no one had returned yet, so he figured that distributing the food among so many people wouldn't be quick.
So Chen Shuning got off the ground, thinking that since she had nothing else to do, she decided to make some snacks for He Chaoyang.
