Chapter 116 Awakening

Knowing that she wouldn't get a good look from Chen Shuning, Yang Wanqiu didn't make a fool of herself and instead went to Gu Xinyi's room.

Just then, Wang Zhi returned carrying the meat that the three of them had been given.

Because the wild boar was the first thing discovered, according to village rules, the educated youth and the hunting team members would get a larger share.

Wang Zhi always ate with Gao Hongyuan and Gu Xinyi, so after he got his share of the meat, he took it directly to Gu Xinyi's room.

Knowing that his friend must be in this room right now, Wang Zhi did not follow his usual practice of going back to the room first to give Gao Hongyuan his things to carry over.

It was precisely because of this that Yang Wanqiu arrived just as she was knocking on the door and waiting for a response.

As Yang Wanqiu turned the corner, she saw Wang Zhi knocking on the door, so she quickly ran a few steps to Gu Xinyi's door.

Because of the unpleasant incident last time, she and Gu Xinyi hadn't spoken for a long time, so Yang Wanqiu wasn't very confident about going to the black market with Gu Xinyi this time.

However, seeing Yang Zhi bring meat, and thinking that Gao Hongyuan should be in Gu Xinyi's room, with the two of them there, if he humbled himself and apologized, Gu Xinyi, with her brainless and soft-hearted nature, should be easy to talk to.

After all, no woman wants to leave her boyfriend with the impression that she is cold-hearted.

It has to be said that Yang Wanqiu's plan was quite good, but she didn't expect to run into a wall with Yang Zhi.

Yang Wanqiu, who was running over with a smile from afar, was about to greet him when she saw Wang Zhi push open the door and enter the house without even looking at her.

What's most infuriating is that the person clearly saw her coming, yet he just closed the door right in front of her.

This left Yang Wanqiu unable to say anything, leaving all her words stuck in her throat.

Knowing she needed his help, she could only suppress her anger and gently knock on the door, softly calling out, "Is Xinyi home? It's me, Wanqiu. I need to talk to you about something."

Gu Xinyi, who was inside the house, really wanted to say that she wasn't home, but there were two men in her house, and it would be inappropriate to say that she wasn't home or to not respond.

So, with no other choice, Gu Xinyi could only reluctantly reply, "Yes, come in."

Yang Wanqiu and Wang Zhi entered the door almost one after the other. Wang Zhi had always looked down on Yang Wanqiu's behavior. They were both kids who grew up in the compound, and how many of them were stupid?

In their eyes, Yang Wanqiu's actions were utterly insignificant.

So when Yang Wanqiu entered, Wang Zhi didn't greet her. Instead, he waved the large piece of meat and the pig's heart that Gao Hongyuan had specifically asked for, saying, "Xiao Gu, Hongyuan said you were frightened today, so he specifically asked me for a pig's heart. I brought it, but we really can't cook it properly. You'll probably have to make your own arrangements."

Gu Xinyi was good at cooking and knew that pork heart and red date soup had a calming effect. However, she did not expect Gao Hongyuan to be so thoughtful. He had thought of something that she herself had not thought of.

If Gu Xinyi doesn't realize this by now, she'll really be a fool.

Then I thought about how I used to argue with him over trivial things all the time. Many times I was being unreasonable, but in the end he was the one who had to swallow his pride and coax me.

Through Wang Zhi and Tian Mi, Gu Xinyi could easily tell how proud he originally was. Yet, such a proud person would always shamelessly try to coax her. Doesn't that say something?

This made Gu Xinyi feel even more upset, and she looked at Gao Hongyuan with even gentler eyes as she said, "Thank you, Brother Hongyuan."

Gao Hongyuan looked at Gu Xinyi's flushed face and knew that the girl had probably figured out his feelings, so he was naturally happy.

With a doting smile, he said, "We don't need to talk about this between us. It's only natural. You two talk first. Wang Zhi and I will go get some firewood and water. We'll cook when we get back. We didn't eat much at noon, so you must be hungry by now."

"Yeah, I've been hungry for ages. Tonight we'll make sauerkraut stew with pork and pork heart and red date soup. The sauerkraut we pickled a while ago should be ready to eat."

Gu Xinyi ate quite a lot at noon; she ate a whole big bowl of egg noodles cooked by Gao Hongyuan.

Gao Hongyuan's words were actually meant for Yang Wanqiu, telling her that they were about to start cooking and that she should keep things brief so as not to delay their cooking.

Everyone in the room understood what he meant, and Yang Wanqiu naturally understood as well.

Her face was somewhat unpleasant, and she glanced at Gao Hongyuan with resentment in her eyes. Unfortunately, he didn't pay any attention to her at all. After giving instructions to Gu Xinyi, he turned around and left the room, showing no interest whatsoever in the purpose of her visit.

This made Yang Wanqiu very unhappy. She couldn't understand why, even though her face was considered one of the best among the educated youth, these men were all blind. Didn't they know how to take care of a beautiful woman?

However, despite not finding it funny and being unhappy, she had come to ask for a favor, so she couldn't show any displeasure.

She gave an awkward laugh, and seeing that Gu Xinyi, who was sitting on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and showed no intention of inviting her to sit down, she had no choice but to sit down next to Gu Xinyi herself. She said with a forced smile, "Xinyi, I think we had some misunderstandings before. You have to believe me, I really didn't mean it. You have to believe me."

Looking at Gu Xinyi's fake smile, Gu Xinyi felt a wave of unease, but her stiff expression did not soften because of Yang Wanqiu's obsequious flattery.

He remained calm and spoke in a cold voice, "It's all in the past now. Whether it was intentional or not doesn't matter. Neither Hongyuan nor I took it seriously."
