Chapter 14 The Unbearable First Night

Yang Xiaohong had a habit of eating things that fell on the ground. At home, she would often pretend to accidentally knock down things that her younger brother didn't like, so that she could eat them. Of course, she wouldn't dare eat things that her brother liked, because that would get her a beating.

So when she saw Chen Shuning take out a pure white steamed bun, she had this idea. However, Chen Shuning's good upbringing made her very focused when eating, and she didn't find an opportunity until Chen Shuning couldn't finish the food and wanted to put it away.

After enjoying the delicious steamed buns, Yang Xiaohong looked at Wang Chunni across from her and said, "Wang Chunni, I think you just said that braised pork doesn't taste good. If you don't like it, you can give it to me. It's shameful to waste food. If you don't like it, I can help you."

Wang Chunni was also stunned by Yang Xiaohong's actions. When she heard that Yang Xiaohong was eyeing her braised pork again, she quickly backed away, saying, "You misheard me. I didn't say I didn't like it. Braised pork is my favorite food."

Yang Xiaohong was already quite satisfied with being able to eat white flour steamed buns, and she had only casually mentioned braised pork. So she wasn't disappointed when she heard Yang Chunni's words.

She just pursed her lips and said, "Tch, I heard you clearly just now that the braised pork wasn't as good as Chen Shuning's meat sauce. If you don't want to give it to me, then don't. Don't blame me for not hearing well. You're so stingy, not as generous as Chen Shuning at all."

Chen Shuning: "Thank you for your compliment. Actually, I'm quite stingy too, okay?"

Yang Xiaohong smacked her lips as she quickly finished the half-eaten steamed bun in her hand. Then she took out a mixed flour steamed bun from her bag and ate it in big bites, muttering to herself, "This mixed flour steamed bun just isn't as good as the pure white flour one."

Yang Xiaohong, who also finished her mixed grain steamed bun in just a few bites, then asked Chen Shuning to watch her luggage while she took an enamel mug from her net bag to get some water.

Watching the girl eat, Chen Shuning felt inexplicably melancholy. These difficult times had driven people to such extremes.

Soon it was completely dark, and the lights in the carriage became dim. After a day of travel, the passengers had lost their enthusiasm from the daytime and began to sleep, some leaning against the ground, others slumped over. Even those who couldn't sleep and were still talking lowered their voices.

Wang Chunni and Xu Laidi woke up for a while in the middle of the night, and the three of them arranged the shifts for watching the luggage that night. Wang Chunni couldn't stay up too late, so she was assigned to the first shift, from 9 pm to 12 am, while Chen Shuning was assigned to the second shift, from 12 am to 3 am.

Because Chen Shuning had access to spiritual spring water that could refresh him, he volunteered to work during the time when people were most likely to feel sleepy. The shift after 3 a.m. was Xu Laidi's shift.

The three of them once again automatically ignored Yang Xiaohong, who was in the same booth. Yang Xiaohong was happy to be ignored by the others, as she was able to sleep soundly with the other three watching her luggage.

It wasn't Chen Shuning's turn to work yet. She was quite tired from using her mental energy to explore the space in the afternoon, so she was dozing off against the car window.

However, Chen Shuning did not sleep well. Sitting in this solid wood chair was really uncomfortable, and after sitting for a long time, not only did her back ache, but her buttocks also felt sore and numb.

Chen Shuning's seat was inside again. Although Yang Xiaohong was rather annoying, she was sleeping soundly, and Chen Shuning felt embarrassed to wake her up and have her go for a stroll.

She could only secretly rely on the spiritual spring water in the space to recuperate, but even so, Chen Shuning still had a very hard time getting through the night. Although it wasn't her shift in the second half of the night, she still couldn't sleep soundly.

Finally, dawn broke, and the people in the carriage gradually woke up. Many of those who had been cooped up all night began to stretch their arms and legs in the aisle. Chen Shuning didn't care whether Yang Xiaohong was awake or not, and directly woke her up. Then he couldn't wait to get up and rush into the toilet.

Fortunately, because she got up early, there weren't many people using the restroom yet. She sprinted ahead of a girl with braided hair and rushed into the restroom. Chen Shuning held her breath, closed the door, locked herself in, and entered the space in one smooth motion.

Shaking her hand as she closed the door, Chen Shuning rushed into the bathroom and washed her hands twice with disinfectant before she felt that her hand was usable again.

Although Chen Shuning felt sore and smelly after a day and night of travel, he resisted the urge to take a shower so that he could be like everyone else and simply washed his face and brushed his teeth.

Knowing that many people use the toilet in the morning, Chen Shuning quickly ate two pieces of bread in front of the kitchen counter after washing up, and then hurriedly left the space.

Even though Chen Shuning had sped up his movements, many people still complained that he had stayed inside for too long. In particular, the girl with braided pigtails said a few sarcastic things about Chen Shuning, such as that he had no public spirit and that he knew there were many people using the toilet in the morning and that he still took up so much space. However, Chen Shuning ignored them all.

There was no other way; this train was a special train for educated youth. Apart from stopping a few times when educated youth boarded within the territory of the northern province, it only stopped briefly when passing other trains, and even then, the doors were not opened. Therefore, the utilization rate of the toilets on this train was unusually high, especially in the morning.

Feeling somewhat guilty, Chen Shuning nodded and apologized all the way, secretly wiping the two fingers she had used to open the door with an alcohol swab.

Chen Shuning thought her movements were quite discreet, but she never expected that the little gesture she made with her fingers would be noticed by someone who had been watching her the moment she appeared.
