Chapter 140 Hunting in the Mountains

After leaving Chen Shuning's sight, He Chaoyang handed a safety-locked air rifle to Chen Jiandang, and the two of them, each carrying a rifle, headed towards the back of the mountain.

This sight made everyone they met along the way extremely envious, especially the kids who had recently become close friends with Chen Jiandang.

They all expressed their desire to go up the mountain together, but this was not the same as playing around in the village; who knew what unknown dangers they might encounter on the mountain.

He Chaoyang was confident that even if they encountered tigers and wild boars, he could protect Chen Jiandang with his skills.

But he wasn't so arrogant as to think that he could protect a group of children with the air gun in his hand, which wasn't very lethal.

So he refused the requests of the children who wanted to come along.

Chen Jiandang wasn't unaware of the gravity of the situation. Instead of trying to show off by insisting that He Chaoyang bring his friends into the mountains, he helped persuade the children who wanted to secretly follow back.

No one knows a brother better than his sister; once Chen Jiandang entered the mountains, he was like a wild horse that had broken free of its reins.

Especially after He Chaoyang taught him how to use the air rifle and guided him to fire a few shots, Chen Jiandang became eager to try it out and began searching for prey everywhere.

To be fair, Chen Jiandang really did have some talent. After firing a few shots in the air and scaring away a few rabbits, he actually managed to shoot a pheasant.

Once he had his harvest, Chen Jiandang became unstoppable, running around like a rabbit in the mountains.

He Chaoyang let him be, silently following behind and cautiously observing the surroundings.

He Chaoyang had already decided that his purpose in going into the mountains was simply to watch Chen Jiandang have fun; he wouldn't fire unless he encountered something valuable.

Of course, if Chen Jiandang didn't catch anything before going home, he would hunt a few rabbits or other small game on his way down the mountain to take back with him. It wouldn't be good to come to the mountains for nothing, would it?

But seeing that this kid seems alright, the two of them really shouldn't go back empty-handed.

The two had a great time in the mountains, and Chen Shuning, after seeing them off, got busy with his own affairs.

He picked up a few frozen glutinous rice cakes from the woodshed, and then found two boxes of pastries in his spatial storage before heading out.

It was lunchtime, so Chen Shuning wasn't worried about being seen.

Chen Shuning headed straight for the brigade leader's house. He Chaoyang's holiday lasted until the eighth day of the Lunar New Year, so Chen Shuning didn't plan to have He Chaoyang make the trip every day.

Although his current unit is not far from their brigade, she couldn't bear to see He Chaoyang travel back and forth in such cold weather.

She only noticed yesterday at lunchtime that He Chaoyang's hands were covered in chilblains, red and swollen.

So during He Chaoyang's Chinese New Year holiday, Chen Shuning still planned to rent the empty house in the backyard and let He Chaoyang stay there.

There's no custom of knocking on doors in rural areas, so Chen Shuning simply carried his things into the yard.

Fortunately, people were starving in those days, and not many families kept dogs. Only the hunters in the village kept two dogs. Otherwise, Chen Shuning really wouldn't have dared to enter other people's yards so casually.

As soon as Chen Shuning entered the courtyard, he called out towards the main house, "Is Aunt Guixiang home?"

The brigade leader's family was having dinner when Wan Guixiang recognized Chen Shuning's voice and quickly put down her chopsticks to greet him.

As soon as Wan Guixiang came out, she saw Chen Shuning and quickly ushered him into the house.

Wan Guixiang and her husband had already sent their married sons out early in the morning, so at this moment, only the elderly couple and their unmarried sons, Shen Dayang and Shen Xiaohua, were eating in the house.

Both of them were familiar with Chen Shuning, especially Shen Xiaohua, who really liked Chen Shuning.

Upon seeing Chen Shuning enter, he quickly put down his chopsticks and greeted her in a very light tone, "Sister Shuning, you're here! Come and sit on the kang (heated brick bed), it's warm there."

This girl usually attends high school in town and is the only girl in the village who has completed high school. However, the situation is not good this year, and the town is becoming increasingly chaotic, so schools have stopped holding classes.

So Shen Baogen thought that since she was already in her final year of high school and would graduate in half a year, he didn't let her go back to school after the autumn harvest, because safety should be the top priority for a girl.

Perhaps because of her education, Shen Xiaohua didn't like playing with the girls in the village, but she enjoyed associating with the educated youth.

Chen Shuning, in particular, had a good relationship with the brigade leader's family, so he often talked with Shen Xiaohua.

Looking at Shen Xiaohua sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed), wearing a floral cotton-padded jacket, with two long braids tied with red hair ties, Chen Shuning remembered that when she sold things last time, Hei Zi had specifically asked her if she had any new styles of hair ties or hair accessories, saying that many people were looking for those before the New Year.

There were indeed a few accessory shops in her shopping mall, and Chen Shuning picked out some small accessories suitable for this era, such as pig intestine hair ties and bow hair clips.

He went to the black market again and earned more than 500 yuan. Although this amount was not as much as he earned from buying watches, it was enough to bring back the money he had sent home to buy a house. Chen Shuning did not mind the small amount.

Seeing Shen Xiaohua now, Chen Shuning remembered that these little things were also good gifts. So he pretended to take out a bright red pig intestine hair tie with a few plastic pearls embedded in the edge from his pocket, but actually took it out from his space.

"Xiaohua, I saw some new styles of hair ties in town a few days ago, so I bought two. When I bought them, I thought that since you have fair skin, this bright red one would look good on you, so I bought one for you."

Why don't you try it on and see if it looks good?

"This, this won't do, Sister Shuning, I can't accept your things."
