Chapter 158 A Proposal at the Hospital Bedside

After a loving and careful interrogation, the old men left the ward satisfied, eager to report to their old leader.

They also thoughtfully took a room full of doctors and nurses with them, leaving the space to the young couple.

He Chaoyang was very weak after the surgery. He lay on the hospital bed with a pale face, but his eyes were shining as he stared at Chen Shuning.

A smile played on his chapped, cracked lips as he said in a hoarse voice, "I heard everything you just said."

He Chaoyang's words made Chen Shuning blush. She had only been thinking about waking He Chaoyang up as soon as possible, and she couldn't even remember what she had said.

However, Chen Shuning did have some recollection of those words of confession.

In a panic, she tried to shake off He Chaoyang's hand, but although He Chaoyang was weak, his large hand was still strong, holding Chen Shuning's hand tightly, staring at Chen Shuning, whose face was flushed with embarrassment.

The surgical wound was still slightly bleeding. Looking at the weak and powerless man on the bed, Chen Shuning felt both ashamed and angry, secretly resenting that this man still had the leisure to tease her at a time like this.

However, Chen Shuning ultimately dared not try to shake off He Chaoyang's hand again.

Although He Chaoyang's wound was in great pain, he was overjoyed to be in the scene he had always dreamed of.

His lover sat by the bed, holding his hand, her eyes filled with concern and worry.

Unable to shake off He Chaoyang's hand, Chen Shuning simply didn't bother arguing with an injured man. Composing herself, she gently patted the back of He Chaoyang's hand with her other hand and said softly, "Don't worry, I won't leave. Let go of my hand first, and I'll go get you a glass of water."

Chen Shuning tried to persuade He Chaoyang to let go by talking to him. At this moment, she desperately needed to find a place to calm down, but He Chaoyang just shook his head slightly and said, "I don't want to drink water. Just stay with me for a while."

He Chaoyang was too weak from blood loss to even speak.

Seeing He Chaoyang like this, Chen Shuning could no longer hold back her tears. She shook her head and said firmly, "No, the doctor said you lost too much blood and need to replenish your nutrition."

It's getting late. Let me make you some malted milk powder first. Tomorrow I'll go to the cafeteria and see if I can borrow the kitchen to make you some chicken soup, okay?

Now be a good boy and wait here for me, just for a little while, I'll be right back, okay?

Chen Shuning coaxed He Chaoyang on the bed like she was coaxing a disobedient child.

Seeing He Chaoyang's weak and powerless appearance, Chen Shuning wanted to get him some spiritual spring water to drink as soon as possible.

Hearing Chen Shuning coax him like a child, He Chaoyang was speechless, but mostly felt sweet. He smiled and said softly, "Okay."

As he said this, He Chaoyang obediently let go of Chen Shuning's hand, but his gaze remained fixed on Chen Shuning's figure.

The small cabinet next to the hospital bed was filled with nutritional supplements: steamed egg cakes, malted milk powder, and milk powder were all laid out on the table, and hot water from the thermos was readily available.

It's unclear who knew that He Chaoyang's body would be very weak after the surgery, but they prepared all these things in advance.

Chen Shuning turned his back, using his body to block the small table, took the cup, scooped out two large spoonfuls of malted milk powder, poured in half a cup of hot water and stirred it, then secretly added half a cup of spiritual spring water before turning around and walking back to the bedside.

Chen Shuning sat back down on the bench, holding a cup in one hand and a spoon in the other, and carefully fed He Chaoyang spoonful by spoonful.

Even after drinking most of the glass of water, He Chaoyang still didn't know if it was just a placebo effect or if the half-glass of malted milk powder really had an effect.

After drinking most of a glass of water, He Chaoyang felt his energy return.

He reached out and took the cup, drank the water in one gulp, and then casually placed the cup on the small table to the side.

He then eagerly grabbed Chen Shuning's hand again.

She spoke with deep affection, "Shuning, do you know? Getting injured used to be commonplace for me. I've never been afraid of injuries more serious than this one."

But the moment I was shot, I was truly terrified. I'm not afraid of death, but I was terrified of never seeing you again.

During the time I was in a coma, the only person I could think of was you.

I thought of the first time we met, and every moment we spent together. Back then, all I wanted was to have you, and I wanted you to become my wife as soon as possible.

But Shuning, when I woke up and saw you, I was scared again. I don't know if I can be so selfish as to be with you.

Because my profession means I can't provide you with a stable life, this isn't the first time I've been injured like this, and it certainly won't be the last.

Shuning, I was lucid for a moment before entering the operating room. I heard the doctors and nurses talking about my injuries. At that moment, I made up my mind that if I couldn't leave the operating room safely this time, then I, He Chaoyang, would be sorry to you. We had spent time together without even saying goodbye.

But if I manage to leave the operating room safely this time, then I, He Chaoyang, will have to let you down, and I will break up with you.

As soon as the word "breakup" left his lips, He Chaoyang clearly felt the little hand he was holding tremble slightly. He felt a surge of sweetness in his heart because he knew that the little girl also had feelings for him.

He gripped Chen Shuning's hand even tighter, his expression and tone resolute as he continued, "But when I opened my eyes and saw you, thinking about what you said in my dazed state..."

I can never bring myself to say goodbye to you, so Shuning, even if I, He Chaoyang, have wronged you in this life, I will never let go of your hand no matter what.
