With a face full of resentment, Wu Shufen returned to her bunk with heavy steps.
She plopped down on the bed, and the thought of the man next door made her furious anger rise uncontrollably.
Why is it that other women find such outstanding men? Not only are they handsome, but they are also considerate and, most importantly, willing to spend money on their wives?
Thinking back to the man she had found, she felt even more wronged.
She thought that marrying an official would allow her to enjoy a few days of happiness, but who would have thought that her husband would be demoted shortly after their marriage, all because of the trouble caused by his damned ex-wife.
Wu Shufen grew angrier the more she thought about it, and her face became increasingly pale.
Her brows were furrowed, her lips were tightly pressed together, and her teeth were clenched so tightly they made a grinding sound.
She felt that she was too unlucky. Why could everyone else find a good man, while she could only live a miserable life with a useless man?
Wu Shufen's resentment grew stronger and stronger; she felt she could no longer endure this kind of life.
She wanted to change, to find a better man, a man who could give her a happy life.
However, she didn't know what to do, and she felt helpless and confused.
When He Weian returned, he saw Wu Shufen looking even worse than before he left to buy food.
He Weian sat down opposite Wu Shufen and carefully placed the lunchbox on the small table.
Looking at Wu Shufen, whose face was gloomy and who seemed very unhappy.
He Weian explained softly, "When I went to the dining car, the staff were assembling the lunch boxes to be pushed into the carriages for sale, so I waited a little longer. Are you hungry? Eat while it's hot."
Wu Shufen was seething with anger. She had just seen the couple next door, who were also newlyweds visiting their parents' home for the first time.
Look at what that man bought! His lunchbox is full of rice, noodles, and three dishes—a perfect mix of meat and vegetables that looks very appetizing. And after the meal, there's even malted milk to drink.
Looking at her own lunchbox, she saw only a box of rice and a little less than half a box of braised pork, with a few pieces of meat floating forlornly in the half-full box of broth. And even then, she had to ask for it before he would reluctantly go to buy it.
Who can eat this little bit of food?
He Wei'an noticed his wife's dissatisfaction, so he quickly put on a smile and said, "Honey, don't be angry. Eat it while it's hot, or it won't taste good when it gets cold."
Wu Shufen said irritably, "Eat, eat, all you know is how to eat! Your wife is being treated like a beggar, and you're still eating. Look at what they're eating, and look at what I'm eating. And couldn't you have bought more? Who's going to eat this little bit?"
He Weian smiled awkwardly and said, "Honey, I'm sorry. I know you're hungry, but I couldn't help it. Food on the train is too expensive, so I bought less. But this is enough for your usual appetite."
Wu Shufen snorted and said, "All you know is to say sorry. Besides, what kind of person would I be if I ate alone? Would others laugh at me for being greedy? Would I be eating meat while watching men eat steamed buns?"
Turning her head to look at the food, which was only enough for one person, Wu Shufen became even angrier.
If she were to eat this by herself, outsiders would think she was incredibly greedy, eating meat while the man ate steamed buns. If it were the two of them, let alone He Weian's appetite, even she wouldn't be full from this little bit of food.
Hearing this, He Weian felt a little guilty and said in a low voice, "The food on the train is too expensive. This braised pork costs only 50 cents. You can get two or three dishes at a state-run restaurant. It's not worth it. You eat quickly. I'll just eat the steamed buns I brought from home."
Besides, there's no one else on the bus right now. Hurry up and eat; no one will laugh at you.
He Weian knew that rice and braised pork were delicious, but unfortunately he didn't have much money, and his wife's family lived in a big city like Beijing.
The main issue is that he's remarried, has two children, and is getting old. If he really goes to his in-laws' house, he's afraid that if he doesn't have a lot of money in his pocket, his in-laws will look down on him.
So I wanted to save money as much as possible and keep it in my pocket to spend in Beijing.
So when He Wei'an learned that a serving of braised pork cost 50 cents, he only ordered a box of rice. Wu Shufen also only ordered half a serving of braised pork, but she asked for extra soup to dip her steamed buns in later.
He Wei'an didn't expect that his words, meant to please his wife, would backfire. Wu Shufen immediately frowned and pointed at He Wei'an, shouting, "He Wei'an, what do you mean by this? So you think I'm the only one who's greedy? So you think I have to eat this expensive meat?"
He Wei'an was completely baffled by her. He couldn't understand why this person, who usually seemed so nice, was in such a bad mood today and he couldn't coax her no matter what he did.
He was getting angry too. He slammed his chopsticks on the small table and said with a stern face, "Didn't you hear people say that you have to eat braised pork? Now that I've bought it for you, you're making a fuss. Why are you so hard to please?"
He Weian's outburst silenced Wu Shufen, who sat on her bed and silently wiped away her tears.
Even in his anger, He Weian didn't try to comfort her. The two of them just sulked, one of them brooding and the other crying softly.
In contrast to the oppressive atmosphere here, the atmosphere on Chen Shuning and He Chaoyang's side was much more cheerful.
She pushed aside the few noodles she couldn't finish and watched He Chaoyang eat with a smile.
At this moment, He Chaoyang's brows furrowed slightly.
He hadn't seen He Weian for about six months. He knew about the trouble his wife's family had gone through, but because He Weian was a decent person in terms of both work ability and character, he spoke up for He Weian at the time, preventing him from being implicated by the Shen family.
