Chapter 18 Stalemate

Ignoring Chen Shuning's scheming, Yang Wanqiu, who had regained some composure, remained calm. After all, in her previous life, when she went to the countryside in the Northwest, the conditions there were even worse than this.

All year round, let alone taking a bath, it's difficult to even have water to wash your face every day. The water you drink is mixed with yellow mud and has a bitter taste.

So Yang Wanqiu didn't pay much attention to where she lived. After feeling a little better, she went straight to the well in the courtyard. Looking at the well water reflecting the moonlight, Yang Wanqiu smiled.

Although she knew life in Heilongjiang Province wasn't easy either, the thought of snatching that man away from Chen Shuning and living a life of luxury for the rest of her life made her feel that she could endure any hardship.

Yang Xiaohong and Zhong Lingling, however, did not look too good. After all, they were both children who grew up in Beijing. Even if their families were not well-off, they still lived in a better house than the one in front of them. They rarely even saw the house in front of them, let alone lived in it.

Zhong Lingling, in particular, lived in a two-story villa with her own room. When she heard that she would have to sleep on a kang (a heated brick bed) with more than a dozen other people, her face immediately turned ugly.

"Feng Zhiqing, Feng Zhiqing, come out here for a moment." Hearing the various complaints around him, the brigade leader frowned again. At this moment, he just wanted to settle these educated youths down so he could go home and rest. This half-day was even more tiring than working.

"Hey, it's Captain Uncle." Hearing the voice from inside the house, Feng Baoguo quickly came out with a kerosene lamp, followed by several other educated youths.

"The captain is here. Come in and sit down."

"Captain, these must be the new educated youths?"

"Why are there so many female educated youths again? Our room can't accommodate them all."

"Yes, why are there so many female educated youths again?"

Apart from Feng Baoguo, who was the first to come out and greet the brigade leader, the other former educated youths began to talk in hushed tones.

“I won’t go inside. It’s getting late. Feng, you and Liu, discuss how to settle the new educated youth. It’s too late today. You can make them something simple to eat. Their food can wait until tomorrow. You can bring them to the brigade to register and collect it when you have time.”

After finishing speaking, the brigade leader turned back to Chen Shuning and the others and said, "This educated youth Feng is the person in charge of the educated youth settlement. You can ask him for help if you need anything in the future. There isn't much work to do in the fields right now, so you new educated youths can rest for a couple of days, put your things away, and then come back to work."

"Understood, thank you, Captain."

"Yes, Captain."

"Thank you, Captain."

Although they weren't entirely satisfied with the housing at the educated youth settlement, they weren't stupid. Since they were already there and wouldn't be able to leave anytime soon, they didn't need to offend the brigade leader, so they all obediently agreed.

Feng Baoguo's expression was alright as he looked at the six new female educated youths, but Liu Shumei, who was standing behind him, looked rather unpleasant.

Ignoring whether it was appropriate or not, she grabbed the sleeve of the brigade leader who was about to leave and pulled him into the house, saying, "Uncle Captain, come with me and take a look. You know the situation at the educated youth settlement. This room is only so big. We already have seven female educated youths here, and now six more have come. Do you think we're going to sleep on such a small kang (heated brick bed)?"

The brigade leader had never seen anything like this before, and before he knew it, Liu Shumei had dragged him into the house.

The others, curious, followed the two into the house.

The kitchen was right inside the house, with a room on each side. Each room had a large kang (heated brick bed). Since Liu Shumei had pulled the brigade leader directly to the room on the left, it was assumed that the girls lived on the left and the boys on the right.

Chen Shuning followed behind the group, first glancing into the room on the right before following them to the room on the left. He saw that the boys' side was fine; there were only four bedding sets on the kang (a heated brick bed), and even with the three people who came this time, there were only seven people, so it was quite spacious.

But it wasn't the same for the girls. The seven bedding sheets on the kang (a heated brick bed) already took up most of the space. Even if the wooden boxes at the end of the kang were moved away, there would only be room for four more people, and even then, it would be difficult to even turn over.

But now that there are six of them, there's no way they can squeeze in.

The brigade leader knew exactly what the situation was like at the educated youth settlement. The reason he didn't mention it on the way was that he planned to hand the problem over to the person in charge of the settlement once they arrived. However, he never expected that he would be dragged into the house by Liu Shumei.

The brigade leader, who was secretly sighing in his heart, looked at Liu Shumei, the female person in charge of the educated youth settlement, and discussed with her: "Educated Youth Liu, how about this? I'm afraid that if we squeeze together on this kang, three people can sleep. I'll see if the remaining three comrades can be arranged to eat with the villagers."

Then he turned back to the male educated youth and said, "Baoguo, go and make arrangements for the male educated youth."

Feng Baoguo, who was in charge of the male educated youth group, smiled and said with a simple and honest expression after hearing the brigade leader's words: "Okay, we have enough space for the male educated youth group, so it's easy to make arrangements."

After saying that, he introduced himself to the new educated youth: "Hello everyone, my name is Feng Baoguo. I am the person in charge of the male educated youth at this educated youth settlement. I have been in the countryside for six years and I am quite familiar with the situation here. If you need anything in the future, you can come to me."

After Feng Baoguo finished speaking, Liu Shumei's expression was still not very good, but she still introduced herself: "Hello everyone, my name is Liu Shumei, and I am the person in charge of the female educated youth. As the brigade leader just said, we can still accommodate three people in this room, even if it is crowded. As for who will stay at the educated youth point and who will go to the villagers' homes to eat, you can discuss it yourselves."
