Chapter 189 Grandparents

This was the first time Chen Shuning had seen He Chaoyang so serious. Not knowing the situation, she didn't know what to say, so she looked at the man opposite her with a nervous expression.

The man opposite clearly understood He Chaoyang's temperament better, and besides, now that you're here, there's no way to hide this from me.

So, with a hint of worry on his face, he said, "This isn't the place to talk. I'm going back to see my grandma anyway, I'll talk to you in the car."

As the group walked out of the department store, a car was already parked at the entrance.

He Zhaoyuan gestured for his secretary to go back first, and then walked to the driver's seat.

Worried about his grandmother, He Chaoyang opened the back door and gestured for Chen Jianjun to sit in the back with Chen Shuning, while he sat in the passenger seat so he could talk to his cousin.

As soon as he got in the car, He Chaoyang couldn't wait to ask about his grandmother's condition.

Now that there were no outsiders around, Lu Zhaoyuan said while turning the steering wheel, "Just a few days before I received my aunt's call, my grandmother suddenly fainted while taking a walk in the garden. She was taken to the hospital and was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage."

Fortunately, the patient was taken to the hospital in time and was saved. However, the patient has been very weak and has been receiving treatment in the hospital for some time. The condition has only stabilized in the last few days, and the patient only started to recuperate at home yesterday.

"If Grandma's condition hadn't been so critical at the time, and her life hadn't been in danger at any moment, even if Grandpa and Grandma couldn't go to your wedding, Dad and several uncles would have gone."

Lu Zhaoyuan's words explained why none of them attended He Chaoyang and Chen Shuning's wedding.

It was only because the old lady's life was in danger at any moment, and the old man firmly prevented her from telling Lu Jinghua, who was happily preparing for her son's wedding, that his wedding with Chen Shuning was able to proceed smoothly as scheduled.

The old lady is out of danger now. Her father said yesterday that he would call his aunt in the next few days and ask her to come back and see his grandmother.

He felt extremely guilty after hearing this. Fortunately, his grandmother was alright. Otherwise, if something had really happened to her, he would have lived with guilt for the rest of his life because he couldn't see her one last time because of his wedding, and he couldn't let his mother see her one last time.

He let out a long sigh, leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes, and his mind was filled with memories of his childhood with his grandmother.

My maternal grandmother's family used to run a teahouse and knew how to make many Jiangnan snacks. When he was a child, he and his brothers loved to follow their grandmother around and pester her to make them delicious food.

Grandma always granted his requests, and he loved eating her wontons the most; they were the most delicious taste in his memory.

Whenever he and his brothers got tired or hungry from playing, their grandmother would bring out a bowl of steaming hot wontons and watch them devour them with a smile.

Back then, every winter and summer vacation, they would beg their parents to send them to their maternal grandmother's house.

However, as time went by and they got older, they visited their maternal grandparents' house less and less often, especially him, who hadn't visited his grandparents even once since he joined the army in the black market.

Fortunately, his grandmother was alright this time. If she hadn't survived, he doesn't know how much he would have regretted it.

The car drove smoothly on the highway, and after about thirty minutes, it arrived at a manor.

The gatekeeper saw the car approaching from afar and opened the gate early, standing at the entrance to wait.

Lu Zhaoyuan nodded to the old man through the car window, then drove the car into the yard.

This is a typical Jiangnan-style garden manor, with lush trees, rugged rocks, pavilions and towers, all arranged in a harmonious and orderly manner.

He Chaoyang got out of the car, took a deep breath, and felt the fresh air and that long-lost sense of familiarity.

But now he has no time to reminisce about the past or appreciate the beautiful scenery; he is in a hurry to see his sick grandmother.

Although he was in a hurry, He Chaoyang did not forget his wife and pulled Chen Shuning along the way to the main house.

They walked through the Lu family's garden, where the flowers, trees, and shrubs were still lush and fragrant, but He Chaoyang had no interest in appreciating them.

His heart was filled with anxiety and worry; he didn't know how the old lady was doing.

Upon entering the main house, one sees many domestic helpers.

The servants in the Lu family have all been working there for decades. Although He Chaoyang hasn't come for many years, they still recognize this young master.

Especially Zhang Ma, who had been by the old lady's side, recognized He Chaoyang as soon as she saw him rushing in. She was just about to arrange for the maids to prepare dinner.

Aunt Zhang exclaimed in surprise, "Young Master Chaoyang!" Hearing that familiar voice, He Chaoyang felt a warmth in his heart and quickly went to greet him.

Zhang Ma said excitedly, "Young Master Chaoyang, you're finally back! The old lady has been talking about you all this time."

He felt a pang of sadness upon hearing this, and tears almost welled up in his eyes.

He held back his tears and asked, "Grandma Zhang, how is the old lady now?"

Aunt Zhang said, "The old lady has been feeling much better these past few days. She drank a full bowl of porridge at noon today and is in much better spirits. But these past few days she has been complaining that she had to get sick at this time, which has prevented everyone from attending your wedding. She said she felt sorry for you and your new daughter-in-law."

Upon hearing this, He Chaoyang, who had been holding back his tears, finally let them fall. He turned his head and quietly wiped them away.

He took Chen Shuning's hand and said to Zhang Ma with a smile, "I knew the old lady was thinking about my wife, so I brought her here."

As he spoke, He Chaoyang turned to Chen Shuning and introduced her: "Shuning, this is Grandma Zhang. She has been with her maternal grandmother since she was a child. Our mother was raised by Grandma Zhang."
