Chapter 218 Returning to Haishi

Chen Shuning stayed with Gu Xinyi for quite a while until Gu Xinyi gradually calmed down and fell asleep. Only then did Chen Shuning quietly leave the room.

On the way back to her own little house, Chen Shuning kept thinking about what delicious food to cook and bring to Gu Xinyi after she woke up. Since Gu Xinyi went to the countryside, she had been eating with three people, and she was used to the lively atmosphere. Now that the other two were going to do dangerous things, it was understandable that Gu Xinyi would feel sad.

As Chen Shuning walked, she kept thinking about what she should do, but when she got home, she saw He Chaoyang already busy in the kitchen.

The pot was simmering with the pheasant they had just hunted in the mountains, along with potatoes, and on top of it was steamed mixed grain rice, which Chen Shuning liked.

Chen Shuning never thought that housework was a woman's job, just like women of this era. So when He Chaoyang cooked, she only showed her happiness, but she didn't have the same special feelings or emotions as others.

He took the small stool handed to him by He Chaoyang and sat down in front of the stove. While poking at the firewood in the stove, he explained, "Brother Gao and the others had to go back to Haishi on urgent business. Xinyi was a little sad, so I stayed with her for a while."

He Chaoyang knew that Gao Hongyu and Wang Zhi, like himself, had just returned yesterday and were rushing back to Haishi just before the Chinese New Year. He knew without a doubt that the matter was urgent.

Since their marriage, He Chaoyang would always meet up with Gu Xinyi, Gao Hongyuan, and others whenever he returned home, having a meal or chatting together.

In He Chaoyang's opinion, both of them were worth getting to know. Gao Hongyuan was smart and quick-witted, and handled things in a generous and proper manner, while Wang Zhi was generous and loyal. He had a good impression of both of them.

When he wasn't home, the two of them took good care of his wife. Since she wasn't very strong, they usually helped her with fetching water.

Most importantly, Gu Zhiqing is his wife's good friend, and it's normal for him to lend a helping hand when her boyfriend is in trouble.

So after a brief moment of thought, he casually asked, "Didn't Hongyuan and the others just return from Haishi yesterday? Why are they in such a hurry to go back now? Is there something urgent?"

"If that's the case, when you see Gu Zhiqing later, tell her that I have a few friends in Haishi who I can talk to. If Hongyuan encounters any difficulties there, she can let me know anytime."

Chen Shuning had been considering whether to ask He Chaoyang for help, but he was worried that it would cause him trouble.

She was feeling conflicted at the moment, but her eyes lit up when she heard He Chaoyang say those words.

After all, it was because of her reminder that Gao Hongyuan and Wang Zhicai decided to return to Haishi.

If they do encounter misfortune on this trip, Chen Shuning will probably feel extremely guilty.

However, her inner turmoil prevented her from making up her mind to speak.

Just as she was still hesitating, He Chaoyang unexpectedly offered to help. This sudden surprise made Chen Shuning feel both astonished and gratified.

Chen Shuning's previously dim eyes suddenly brightened. She looked at He Chaoyang with surprise and asked in a voice full of expectation and anxiety, "Is it really possible to do this? I'm worried it will cause you trouble. After all, the Tian family doesn't seem like someone to be trifled with."

He Chaoyang gazed at the little girl in front of him, who was filled with joy but also looked worried, and the corners of his mouth couldn't help but turn up slightly.

He could tell that although she was worried about her friends, he was clearly more important to her.

Subconsciously reaching out and gently rubbing Chen Shuning's hair, He Chaoyang smiled and explained, "Actually, the old master of the Tian family, Tian Chengyuan, was just a small gang leader at the canal wharf."

Later, due to certain reasons, he managed to get in touch with the Wei family, but it was only through the Wei family that he gained some influence in Haishi.

Not to mention them, even the Wei family had only helped a few underground party members before the founding of the People's Republic of China.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, one of the underground party members was assigned to a leadership position in Haishi.

It was precisely because of this friendship that the Wei family was able to establish a firm foothold in Shanghai.

Therefore, strictly speaking, the Tian family was at best an insignificant nobody under the Wei family, nothing to be afraid of.

In fact, as soon as Chen Shuning entered the room, He Chaoyang keenly sensed that this little girl seemed to have something on her mind.

Who would have thought that she was such a simple and innocent girl? I only asked her a couple of questions, and she opened up about her troubles without any reservations.

After hearing He Chaoyang's explanation, Chen Shuning finally felt relieved. She said with a smile, "If it won't be too much trouble for you, please help Xinyi! Xinyi is so pitiful. Her parents died early, and her uncle's family treats her extremely harshly."

Now that she has finally met someone like Brother Gao who treats her wholeheartedly, I really don't know if Xinyi could withstand the blow if something else were to happen.

Xinyi told me that she and Brother Gao had already discussed it; if Brother Gao returned safely this time, they would get married. Clearly, she had feelings for Brother Gao.

Looking at Chen Shuning, who was beaming as she recounted everything, He Chaoyang couldn't help but feel happy.

Meanwhile, Chen Shuning's long-standing worries were finally resolved, and his mood improved as a result.

Knowing that Gu Xinyi had just fallen asleep, Chen Shuning didn't rush to tell her the news, but planned to tell her later.

Anyway, Gao Hongyuan and Wang Zhicai had only just left, and they couldn't even get to the guesthouse in Wangshan County. They didn't have cell phones right now, so even if Xinyi told them, she wouldn't be able to contact Gao Hongyuan.
