Chapter 39 The feeling of home

This idea made He Chaoyang even more determined to trick the little girl into his hands, or rather, to win her over.

Seeing He Chaoyang lost in thought with a smile on his lips, Chen Shuning raised his voice and called out, "Brother He."

Feeling somewhat guilty about his earlier thoughts, He Chaoyang was brought back to his senses by the call. He scratched his head sheepishly, pointed towards the woodshed, and said, "I'll put the firewood in the woodshed and come over."

Chen Shuning was unaware of He Chaoyang's thoughts, assuming he was simply tired, so she didn't take it to heart. She placed the basin on the washbasin stand by the door and said, "Brother He, please wash your hands first. I'm going to deliver some vegetables to the old house and will be back in a bit."

After saying that, Chen Shuning turned around and went into the kitchen. He took a large bowl, filled it with a big bowl of stew, and headed towards the old educated youth's room.

Chen Shuning only wanted to deliver a bowl to the old house. As for the people in the small house in the backyard, Yang Wanqiu would avoid them like the plague, so Chen Shuning naturally wouldn't take the initiative to visit them.

The others hadn't been there long, and they were all arrogant and didn't even greet each other when they met. Chen Shuning naturally wouldn't bother to be friendly to them.

It's almost six o'clock now, but because it's a holiday today, many people went to town and came back a bit late, so the old house is just starting to cook. The kitchen door is open, and Liu Shumei and Wang Meixiang are cooking.

Chen Shuning had a good relationship with both of them. Having just cooled down a bit, Chen Shuning found the kitchen too hot, so instead of going inside, she stood at the door and called out, "Sister Shumei, Sister Meixiang, are you cooking?"

Liu Shumei, who was cooking, heard Chen Shuning's voice and replied with a smile without looking up: "Yes, Wang Zhiqing and the others went to town today and came back a little late, so I'll cook a little later and have some with them."

"By the way, Shuning, what brings you here? Wait a moment, I'll serve the food and then come over."

Knowing that Liu Shumei had misunderstood, Chen Shuning quickly explained, "It's alright, Sister Shumei. My brother's classmate came over today! I made some dishes and served you all a bowl. I'll add some more dishes for you. Please don't mind my cooking, Sister Shumei."

Upon hearing this, Liu Shumei, who had been engrossed in cooking, finally looked up. Seeing that Chen Shuning had finished cooking, her smile deepened. She quickly scooped the food out of the pot and placed it on the stove. Without any hesitation, she took the bowl from Chen Shuning and said, "Then I won't stand on ceremony with you. I'll tell everyone later that I appreciate your kindness, Shuning."

It wasn't that Liu Shumei was the kind of person who liked to take advantage of others; it was just that she felt it was good that Chen Shuning and the others, even though they had moved out to live on their own, were still living in the same courtyard and were all educated youth sent to the countryside. It was always good that they could take care of each other like Chen Shuning did.

Chen Shuning waved his hand dismissively, "Sister Shumei, what are you saying? I've never been polite with you. Besides, we all live in the same educated youth compound, and everyone has helped me a lot. It's just a bowl of food, why bother thanking me?"

Sister Shumei, Brother He is still waiting at home, so I'll head back now.

"Alright, let's go back quickly. It's not good to keep the guests waiting too long."

After Chen Shuning walked away, Wang Meixiang, who had been tending the fire in front of the stove, rolled her eyes and whispered, "Shumei, do you think that soldier is really Shuning's brother's classmate? I saw that the way he looked at Shuning was unusual. Besides, would a classmate's sister be taken care of like that? I just saw that soldier go up the mountain to collect firewood for Shuning."

Liu Shumei found a plate, covered the food Chen Shuning had given her, and placed it on the stove to keep it warm. She was just waiting for everyone to come back before she could start eating. However, she suddenly heard these words and glanced at her friend of many years with some displeasure.

He said, "It should be true. Judging from their accents, they are both from Beijing. Maybe they knew each other before. Knowing that she came here to work in the countryside, and that she is a classmate's sister, it's normal for them to come and visit and take care of her."

Don't go around telling everyone. Even if that guy is a soldier, his character is beyond question, and Shu Ning isn't the kind of unreliable kid either.

At this point, Liu Shumei gave Wang Meixiang a meaningful look and said, half seriously and half warningly, "Let's not even talk about how good Shuning is to us. She always thinks of us. Just now, that bowl of food had either meat or canned luncheon meat in it."

Just look at that soldier; he doesn't seem like an ordinary person. Don't be fooled and end up like those shallow-minded people who gossip about him behind his back.

We can't be ungrateful. On the contrary, if we need help in the future, we should help each other. Shu Ning is much more worthy of our friendship than those girls who only know how to gossip behind people's backs, understand?

Liu Shumei had recently heard some unpleasant rumors about Chen Shuning. Her friend had also shared these rumors with those people. If she didn't know that Chen Shuning was naive and easily swayed, Liu Shumei wouldn't have pointed it out to her.

During the meal, Liu Shumei mentioned that Chen Shuning had brought the food, and everyone expressed their gratitude with expressions of thanks, though what they were really thinking was anyone's guess.

Some people had a better impression of Chen Shuning, especially the male educated youth who had never had any conflicts with Chen Shuning and Wang Meixiang, who had been enlightened by Liu Shumei.

There are also people who are jealous of Chen Shuning. Although they say thank you, they don't really appreciate it. They think that Chen Shuning's family is well-off, that he built his own house as soon as he arrived, and that he eats well every day. They believe that it is only right for him to bring them some things occasionally.

Then there are people like Yang Xiaohong, who are not only greedy but also extremely jealous. While eating the pork belly and luncheon meat in her bowl, she thinks bitterly, "That bitch is always using these little tricks to win people over!"
