"Okay, I'll go right away."
Wang Chunni had never experienced anything like this before, and at a loss for what to do, she naturally did whatever Chen Shuning said.
Chen Shuning, who had just sent the person away, checked again to make sure that Xu Laidi, whose eyes were closed, was indeed burning up and unconscious.
He secretly took out the crushed ibuprofen with his back to the door, picked up the half-bowl of water on the kang table, and poured the powdered medicine into the bowl.
With lives at stake, Chen Shuning didn't care about hygiene anymore. He stuck his finger into the bowl and stirred it. Once the powdered medicine had almost dissolved, he took off his shoes and got onto the kang (heated brick bed).
Chen Shuning, who was kneeling on the kang, struggled to help Xu Laidi up and lean her against him. He didn't dare to wake Xu Laidi and just poured the small bowl of water with medicine down her throat while she was still unconscious.
Perhaps it was because Xu Laidi was burning up with fever and thirsty, or perhaps it was her will to survive, but as soon as the bowl was brought to her lips, Xu Laidi opened her mouth and drank it down without any trouble.
Seeing the remaining powdered medicine at the bottom of the bowl, Chen Shuning thought for a moment and then secretly added a little spiritual spring water to the bowl with her finger, shook it, and fed it to Xu Laidi in the same way.
This was repeated twice until there was no trace of medicine left in the bowl before Chen Shuning put the bowl aside with peace of mind.
As luck would have it, just as Chen Shuning put down his bowl, Wang Chunni carried a basin into the house.
Chen Shuning glanced at the basin of warm water, which was more than half full, and quickly asked Wang Chunni to pour out some of the water, leaving only a small half basin before pouring half a bottle of the liquor he had brought into the basin.
Then, with Wang Chunni's help, the two of them took off Xu Laidi's cotton-padded coat and began to teach Wang Chunni how to wipe Xu Laidi's palms and soles to cool her down physically.
After the two of them worked for more than half an hour, the temperature in the room rose, and the flush on Xu Laidi's face slowly began to fade. Her breathing was also not as heavy as before, and the two of them finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Chen Shuning removed the thick blanket that was already soaked with sweat from Xu Laidi and replaced it with a dry blanket.
Glancing at the time, it was already past 2 a.m. Thinking that Xu Laidi might relapse, Chen Shuning decided not to go home and just stay here for the night.
No sooner had she and Wang Chunni lain down than they heard someone banging on the door of the old house.
Then came Wang Wenfang's slightly tearful cry, "Brother, brother, please go and see her! Sister Lingling has a fever, please go and see her!"
Wang Wenfang's piercing cry drowned out the sound of the wind and rain at night, waking everyone in the old house.
The lights in both rooms, east and west, turned on almost simultaneously.
Upon recognizing his sister's voice, Wang Wenqi didn't even have time to put on his clothes; he ran out in his slippers.
Seeing her younger sister standing in the rain without an umbrella, she felt sorry for her and quickly pulled her inside. She scolded her with a hint of reproach, "How could you go out in such heavy rain without an umbrella? What if you catch a cold? And is the wound on your leg still hurting? Is there anything more important than your own health?"
As Wang Wenqi spoke, he turned to go inside, saying, "You're such a grown-up, and you can't even take care of yourself. And look at what you're wearing! Wait here, I'll go get you some clothes to wear. Don't end up sick and crying again."
Wang Wenqi spoke so quickly and urgently, like setting off firecrackers, that he didn't even give his younger sister a chance to interrupt.
However, Wang Wenfang felt a little smug seeing that her brother was concerned about her first, and she didn't think of interrupting her brother's concern for her.
But seeing her brother about to leave, she remembered that Zhong Lingling was seriously ill. She hurriedly grabbed Wang Wenqi, who was about to leave, and said, "Brother, don't worry about me. Sister Lingling is sick. She has fainted. You should go and see her."
The rain was even heavier than during the day, and with the howling wind, Wang Wenqi could only recognize his younger sister's voice, but he really couldn't hear what Wang Wenfang said.
Hearing from her sister that Zhong Lingling had fainted, she no longer cared about anything else and turned to run towards Zhong Lingling's little house in the backyard.
At this time, the other people in the room also came out one after another. When they saw Wang Wenfang's disheveled appearance, the others were fine, but the female educated youth who usually didn't get along with her couldn't help but make a few sarcastic remarks.
Among them, Fang Qing, an older educated youth who also had feelings for Gao Hongyuan, was the most sarcastic, while the others at most muttered a few words in hushed tones.
Fang Qing, however, was different. Before Gao Hongyuan and Gu Xinyi got so close, the two of them had fought several times over Gao Hongyuan.
Although neither of them ultimately succeeded in winning Gao Hongyuan's favor, the enmity between them was still established.
Seeing Wang Wenfang looking so disheveled, Fang Qing naturally had to jump out and make a few sarcastic remarks.
Fang Qing glanced at Wang Wenfang sideways and said sarcastically, "Wang Wenfang, who are you trying to seduce in this semi-transparent outfit in the middle of the night?"
Wang Wenfang had gone to bed early. Although she had rested for a day due to her injury, she had actually done a lot of work, even though she hadn't worked in the fields for the past few days. So, she hadn't recovered yet and went to bed early today.
She was half asleep when Zhong Lingling woke her up. She watched as Zhong Lingling used her last bit of strength to wake her up and then fainted right in front of her. Wang Wenfang didn't care about anything else. She put on her shoes and ran to the old house to find her brother.
