Chapter 9 Farewell

Although Chen Shuning was exhausted after a long day, she decided to move all the perishable food from the shopping mall to the basement, which has a preservation function, because she thought about the scarcity of resources in the world she lived in and wanted to avoid waste.

First, there's the food court on the top floor, with about forty or fifty unique shops. However, thanks to the elevator, carrying things wasn't too difficult for her.

First, stuff as much stuff as possible into the store’s existing refrigeration equipment. Apart from some finished products, many raw materials can still be stored for a while and do not need to be moved immediately, which can save some time.

So after moving some of the ready-made food from the food court back to the basement, Chen Shuning glanced at the time. It was midnight. Thinking that he could catch up on sleep on the train the next day, he gritted his teeth and dragged his tired body to the large supermarket on the basement floor of the shopping center.

Supermarkets also sell a lot of ready-made foods and similar items, which have a very short shelf life. So supermarkets usually discount unsold items before closing.

Based on the principle that waste is shameful, even though she knew that most of the food was not to her liking, Chen Shuning decided to take everything away, so that she could give it away even if she didn't eat it herself.

So even though Chen Shuning was so tired that he could barely lift his arms, he had no choice but to resign himself to carrying the loads one trip after another.

Chen Shuning, her legs trembling like noodles, finally managed to carry the last truckload of short-shelf-life goods from the underground supermarket into the basement. She then succumbed to overwhelming exhaustion and fell asleep outside the space.

There's no way around it; my body is really weak these days, especially with the injuries I'm already carrying.

Even drinking plenty of spiritual spring water during this period didn't have much effect. There was a spiritual spring in Chen Shuning's space, located in a lotus pond made of white jade in the southeast corner of the courtyard. A lotus flower stood proudly among the large lotus leaves, and clear, transparent spiritual spring water gushed out from the lotus petals and flowed into the lotus leaf pond below.

However, although this spiritual spring water also has the effects of strengthening the body and relieving fatigue, it does not have the magical effects of bringing the dead back to life and healing bones as described in novels.

After leaving the space, Chen Shuning forced himself to open the tightly closed window and then lay down on the kang (a heated brick bed) and fell into a deep sleep.

The next morning, Chen Shuning woke up to the sound of pattering rain. Hearing cooking sounds coming from the kitchen, Chen Shuning quickly got up and dressed.

As soon as Chen Shuning entered the kitchen, he saw his mother bending over making pancakes and his younger brother sitting on a small stool in front of the stove helping to stoke the fire.

Although she wasn't the original owner of this body, the thought of her face, which looked exactly like her parents', and the concern shown to her by her younger brother whom she had only spent a day with, brought tears to Chen Shuning's eyes.

She reached behind her mother and wrapped her arms around her waist, asking softly, "Mom, why are you up so early?"

Hearing her daughter's slightly nasal voice, Chen's mother felt sad. Although she kept working, she said in a rare gentle tone, "Don't you love the mixed flour pancakes that Mom makes? I'll make you a lot. They keep well and can last for two days."

You can save it for later on the train. Combined with the biscuits and steamed cakes in your pocket, it should be enough for you to eat on the train for the next few days.

Thinking about all the steamed cakes and cookies her mother bought for her yesterday, Chen Shuning couldn't help but say, "Mom, those cookies and steamed cakes you bought yesterday are enough. Why did you get up so early to make all that? It must be so tiring."

As Chen's mother put the oil paper packets into her cloth bag, she whispered, "There's a water bottle in the bag. I made you some sugar water. Drink some when you feel uncomfortable on the bus."

I added a lot of sugar. When you arrive, check if there's any hot water in the car. If there is, you can mix it with water from your teacup. If there's no hot water, you can mix it with the cooled boiled water in your pocket.

The water turtle mother has been thoroughly cleaned. The water inside is drinkable, but remember, absolutely do not drink tap water. Your stomach isn't sensitive, so please be careful while you're out.

As she spoke, Chen Ma waved the oil paper package in her hand and said, "I wrapped the oil cakes one by one, I didn't put them in a lunchbox. You can take one as you eat, so as not to make people envious if they see a little girl like you carrying too much food."

You ate the dumplings in the lunchbox for lunch today, and your dad will buy you some steamed buns later. These two things don't keep well, so eat them first.

These fried dough sticks keep longer, and so do the steamed buns; they can last two or three days. You can eat them with the meat sauce. Oh, and Mom packed a lot of your favorite meat sauce and chili sauce; they're all in the blue cloth bag where you keep your clothes. If you don't like the food there, you can mix them with your rice.

Because Chen Shuning likes to eat steamed buns from the Xicheng State-run Restaurant, Chen's father made an appointment with the head chef of the state-run restaurant, whom he knew well, early in the morning, and went to the chef's house to pick up the steamed buns.

At that time, the train was very slow. It would take three or four days to travel from Beijing to the place where she was sent to the countryside. So, to reassure Chen's mother, Chen Shuning listened and nodded, indicating that she had remembered everything.

"Oh, right, I also asked your dad to buy you your favorite donkey roll. Mom is keeping it chilled in the well. It doesn't keep for long, so remember to eat it today."

Listening to Chen's mother's nagging instructions, Chen Shuning felt a mix of emotions, unable to describe the feeling.

She hugged Chen Ma tighter, tears welling up in her eyes, and asked in a muffled voice from behind Chen Ma, "Mom, what time did you get up to prepare all this stuff?"

Chen's mother was also reluctant to part with her daughter. Hearing her daughter's obvious sobs, she felt bad too. She turned her back and gently patted her daughter's back. "Anyway, I couldn't sleep, so I got up. The food on the train is expensive and not very tasty. Mom will prepare more of your favorite foods for you."
