Chapter 58: A Fight Broke Out

Not only Liu Shumei came to the front yard, but many other enthusiastic educated youths also came after learning that Zhong Lingling was sick.

However, since it was a female educated youth's room, the male educated youth who came along all kept a respectful distance and waited in the outer room.

The minority obeys the majority, and those few who don't know their place are too embarrassed to enter the house. As for whether there are any sneaky peeks into the house, that's anyone's guess.

Wang Wenqi, the boyfriend, didn't care about anything else. He was the first to rush over and immediately saw Wang Wenfang lying on the floor of her room.

With tears welling up in his eyes from heartache, Wang Wenqi carried her directly to the kang (a heated brick bed). As soon as he placed her on the kang, he saw his girlfriend's face, which was flushed red from the fever, and her lips, which were dry and chapped.

The man, who was over 1.8 meters tall, immediately teared up. Without thinking, he grabbed the quilt from the kang (a heated brick bed), wrapped it around the person, and tried to run outside.

Wang Wenqi's actions were witnessed by Liu Shumei, who arrived a little later after talking to Chen Shuning.

Although Liu Shumei didn't know where Wang Wenqi wanted to take Zhong Lingling, it was raining heavily outside, and Zhong Lingling was sick, so she wouldn't let Wang Wenqi carry her out.

So he quickly stopped her, saying, "Wang Zhiqing, what are you doing? Lingling still has a fever, and it's raining heavily outside. Are you carrying her outside because you think Lingling isn't sick enough? Put her down right now."

"Sister Liu, please don't stop me. Lingling has fainted from the fever. She won't respond no matter how I call her. We need to get her to the hospital right away."

Wang Wenqi was also in a panic. Seeing Liu Shumei blocking the door and preventing him from leaving, he shouted anxiously.

Instead of obediently putting Zhong Lingling down, he anxiously carried the blanket-wrapped Zhong Lingling around the room.

Despite Wang Wenqi's usual calm demeanor, he's still just a seventeen or eighteen-year-old lad who hasn't experienced anything like this before, so he's a bit at a loss right now.

Liu Shumei could understand Wang Wenqi, so she didn't pay attention to his attitude. Instead, she turned to Wang Wenfang and said, "Hurry up and help your brother settle Lingling on the kang. She already has a fever from being chilled. If you keep putting her like this, it will only get worse."

After saying this, Liu Shumei ignored Wang Wenqi and reached under the mattress on the kang (a heated brick bed) to feel around.

Feeling the coldness in his hands, he frowned and shouted outside, "Brother Feng, hurry up and have someone light the stove in this room. This kang is freezing cold, and the room is cold too. Even a healthy person would get sick if they stayed in this room for too long, let alone a sick person."

"Brother Feng, keep an eye on things. Once the water's warm enough, bring a basin in quickly."

Then Liu Shumei looked at Wang Wenfang and said, "Wenfang, hurry up and find a towel. Once Brother Feng and the others have boiled the water, put it on Lingling's forehead. That will help cool her down."

Wang Wenfang, who was helping her brother put Zhong Lingling in bed, heard this and said with dissatisfaction, "The towel is hanging behind the door of Lingling's room. Sister Shumei, could you ask someone outside to get it for me? I'm so cold. My feet are frozen solid. I don't know what kind of lousy place this is. How can it be so cold in October? I don't know how cold it would be in winter. I've woken up from the cold several times this night."

Fang Qing and Wang Wenfang didn't get along, partly because they had fought a few times with Gao Hongyuan at the beginning, and partly because she really disliked Wang Wenfang's lazy and greedy nature.

So when she heard Wang Wenfang's words, she immediately and mercilessly retorted, "You woke up several times last night from the cold and didn't even know to get up and start a fire. I really don't know if you're brainless or just incredibly lazy."

To be honest, Zhong Lingling is pitiful. She's stuck with a sister-in-law like you, who treats her to good food and drink every day, but when she's actually sick, there's not even anyone to cook for her or bring her water.

Now that Wang Wenqi had settled her in, he looked at his girlfriend's flushed face and dry, chapped lips and felt heartbroken. He felt even more guilty for letting Zhong Lingling down.

Thinking that Lingling could have stayed in the city and enjoyed a good life, if it weren't for her mother's fear that her future daughter-in-law would run away after she went to the countryside, and her suggestion that Lingling wouldn't have had to come to the countryside to suffer.

Normally it would be fine, but these past few days, with the autumn harvest, Lingling's once fair and delicate hands are covered in blisters from the work. Even so, she still has to wash clothes, cook, and take care of her brother and sister every day after work.

My younger sister used to help my mother with cooking and laundry when she was at home, but after coming to the countryside, she has become more and more spoiled.

These days, not only does she help Lingling with laundry and cooking, but she even has to have Lingling wash her own clothes.

Moreover, he had already noticed that Lingling had a slight fever during dinner tonight. Although he wanted to stay and take care of her after arranging for her to take medicine and rest, he had already decided to do so.

However, since they were still a couple who weren't married yet, Wang Wenqi was worried that staying overnight would damage his girlfriend's reputation.

So he specifically instructed his younger sister to sleep with Lingling at night, to be alert while sleeping, and to get up in the middle of the night to add firewood to the stove. He carried the firewood into the house, afraid that his younger sister would be afraid to go out in the middle of the night.

But what did his sister do? Not only did she not listen to him and sleep with Lingling, but she also woke up several times from the cold without getting up to add firewood. It seems he really spoiled his sister.

The more Wang Wenqi thought about it, the angrier he became. He saw that his younger sister was still only thinking about herself and had put her wet feet into Lingling's bed without caring whether Lingling was cold or not.
