"Young man, where are your family members? You'd better let them in."
"Big sister, I came alone. I'm an educated youth sent to the countryside. I'm here today to pick up the package my family sent me."
At that moment, Chen Shuning didn't think much of it, assuming that the staff were just worried about her being so young and carrying things alone.
"Have you hired a car yet? There's a lot of stuff; it might be difficult for you to carry it all by yourself."
Even now, Chen Shuning didn't realize how many things her mother had sent her. She had originally planned that if there were too many things, she would move them to the small alley next to the post office first, and then find a place to receive them. She had already chosen a location.
So he replied casually, "Yes, the oxcart from our village will be here to pick me up soon."
Upon hearing this, the post office lady didn't say anything more, but instead handed Chen Shuning's parcel slip to a man next to her.
After the man took the parcel slip, he called another man before heading to the parcel storage room behind the post office.
When the two men came out again, Chen Shuning saw two burly men, each pulling a large sack out of the counter.
Chen Shuning was dumbfounded when she saw the two large sacks in front of her. How was she supposed to move the things to the alley next door with such big sacks?
To her surprise, this wasn't the end of it. Two staff members placed the package next to her and said, "You stay here and watch the things. We'll go get the rest of the packages."
After saying that, the two turned around and walked back behind the counter. A little while later, they came out again, each dragging a large sack.
Looking at the four large sacks in front of her, Chen Shuning felt like crying. How was she supposed to carry all these things?
She couldn't very well perform some kind of magic trick in front of so many people at the post office and just take the items directly.
She reached out and tried to lift the weight of the sacks. She could lift only one of them, which was soft and squishy, but she couldn't even pull the other three.
The older woman behind the counter, seeing Chen Shuning staring at the four sacks and unsure what to do, kindly reminded her, "Young lady, you have too much stuff. Why don't you wait here for a while?"
"Isn't your village's oxcart coming to pick you up soon? When it arrives, we'll all help you lift it onto the cart."
Hearing this, Chen Shuning felt even more like crying. What kind of oxcart was coming to pick her up? She had just made that up on the spot. Now, wasn't this a case of shooting herself in the foot?
With a forced smile that looked more like a grimace, Chen Shuning took out a handful of fruit candies from her handbag—actually, from her spatial storage—and approached the counter, smiling as she spoke: "Ma'am, I really didn't expect my family to send so many things, so I arranged to meet Niu Che at the supply and marketing cooperative next door."
This thing looks quite heavy, and I feel bad troubling the post office staff to deliver it so far. So, could you please leave it here for me while I go out and see if I can find someone to help me?
These days, candy is a precious commodity. Besides, looking at something isn't a big deal; she can see it from behind the counter. So she glanced at her colleagues around her and, seeing that no one was paying attention, secretly took the fruit candy Chen Shuning handed her and said with a smile, "Little sister, you can just put the things there without worry. I'll watch over them and make sure they don't get lost."
With the post office lady's assurance, Chen Shuning felt reassured and went out to look for the person. After all, people in this era are still very simple and kind, and there was more than one staff member at the post office. Although the lady had been sneaking around when handing out the candy, she had been speaking quite loudly. So Chen Shuning felt at ease and turned to run out.
She had just left the supply and marketing cooperative after 1 p.m., and then wasted some time at the post office, so there wasn't much time left before the 2 p.m. meeting time.
In his anxiety, Chen Shuning didn't even look behind him before turning around and running. But as soon as he took a step, he saw a flash of green in front of him. Running too fast, Shuning didn't have time to react and ran straight into it.
The hard impact made Chen Shuning's head spin and he fell backward.
He Chaoyang, who was on the other side, had come specifically to find Chen Shuning, so he recognized the little girl he had been thinking about for several days the moment she bumped into him.
Otherwise, with his skills, he could have easily dodged the moment Chen Shuning crashed into him, and grabbed the little girl's arm to pull her back from falling backward.
After helping the girl to stand steadily, He Chaoyang took a closer look at the little girl in front of him who had captivated him after just one meeting.
She wore two trendy braids, a white long-sleeved cotton shirt, and black trousers. The shirt was tucked into the trousers, making her slender waist appear even more delicate.
Her fair face was flushed red, whether from running too fast or from being frightened by the collision. After regaining her balance, she patted her chest with her delicate hands and breathed heavily. Even the usually calm and composed He Chaoyang blushed for once.
He Chaoyang came here specifically to see Chen Shuning today. Just the day before yesterday, he received a letter from his old classmate Chen Jianjun, saying that his younger sister had come to work in the countryside and asked him to take care of her if it was convenient for him.
He hadn't taken it seriously at first, and he'd been busy these past few days, so he figured he'd call the commune secretary in Hongqi Commune when he was done in the evening.
