Chapter 13 The Temptation of Divorce

The temptation to divorce is too great.

Even her father and brother, who loved her so much, remained united on the issue of divorce. Despite her long-standing protests, no one gave in.

But if Shen Shixun wants a divorce, they... they probably won't do anything to him other than beat him up.

"I'll sign the papers once the baby is born, in just a few months."

"Then you must keep your word."

"good."

Xiang Nan thought to herself that it would only be a few months before she gave birth and became single again, allowing her to freely date and pursue the men she liked.

Song Ze said that he has always liked Jiang Yao, but it doesn't matter, she will find a way to make him like her.

Seeing the woman raise the corners of her lips as she gazed at the grassland outside, the man looked away.

This is his world, not Xiang Nanzhi's world.

His children are from the grasslands, and they will eventually return to the grasslands with him.

But he wouldn't tell Xiang Nanzhi, and perhaps she didn't care; deep down, she probably still thought the child was a burden to her.

Lying on the bed, Xiang Nanzhi had her back to the man, "Shen Shixun."

"Um?"

The man lay flat on his back. Above the tent was a pointed corner, and there was nothing there. A lamp hung on one side of the wall, but it had long been turned off, and the surroundings were eerily dark.

A mastiff was barking not far away, and the mastiff at the door was responding to the mastiffs from other houses, as if they were exchanging some kind of secret signal.

Did my dad say something to you?

"No."

The man closed his eyes, and the image of Xiang Zhengyi's face appeared in his mind.

No one in the Xiang family respected him, but the reason he and Xiang Zhengyi could sit together and talk calmly was because they shared the same goal.

Xiang Zhengyi cares about the Xiang family's flesh and blood; he cares about his own children—they share the same sentiment.

Shen Shixun wasn't in a hurry to go back, but his mother was worried, fearing that something might have happened to Xiang Nanzhi, who was heavily pregnant.

Her husband was also from out of town, and she knew that it was difficult for outsiders to adapt to life here.

The next morning, Chen's mother made butter tea for Xiang Nanzhi. Xiang Nanzhi took a sip, and the tea tasted sweet and fragrant around his lips.

Shen Shixun and his mother talked for a long time, and then Shen Jila also said a few words to Shen Shixun, blushing as she spoke.

Back in the tent, Shen Shixun packed two sets of clothes, and Shen Jila also gave Xiang Nanzhi a set of clothes to change into. Xiang Nanzhi changed into them and saw the man put the rest of the clothes into a black backpack.

Where are we going?

"Didn't you want to go back?"

Xiang Nanzhi was stunned for a moment, "Leave now?"

"Yes, let's go now."

It was quite sudden. He could have stayed in Saigon longer to spend time with his family, but because she came, he had to leave after only a few days.

Xiang Nanzhi looked at the Gong ethnic clothing she was wearing and realized that this was what Shen Jila meant by asking her to change her clothes.

Since she was leaving, I wanted her to dress presentably.

"This dress belongs to your sister."

"It wasn't my sister's, it was my mother who made it."

Shen's mother had been to Latour with Shen's father long ago. Latour is the most prosperous place in Saigon. In Latour, Shen's father took Shen's mother to buy many things, including some jewelry and fine fabrics.

The mother couldn't bear to use the fabric herself, so she made clothes for Shen Shixun and Shen Jila, and used the rest to make a dress for her future daughter-in-law.

Shen's mother thought to herself that a mother-in-law should always give her daughter-in-law something as a gift when they first meet.

But Shen Shixun didn't say any of this; his gaze lingered on Xiang Nanzhi for a while longer.

I'm used to seeing women on the grasslands wearing tribute clothes, but I've rarely seen such a fair-skinned beauty wear them. She has fair skin, big eyes, and pink lips. Shenjila even put a pure silver headdress on her head. She looked up, but the man turned his face away.

She couldn't see his blushing face.

"Let's go, let's go."

Should we bring these with us?

Xiang Nan knew that it was a very, very long way to get a car from here, at least several hours' walk. The grassland was vast and boundless, with sand dunes, rock forests, and grasslands.

We can't do without food.

She crossed this land with the intention of getting a divorce, and her stomach was growling with hunger.

These dried meats look ordinary and taste average, but the meat is fresh and delicious, made with high-quality ingredients, and can fill your stomach.

"Do you want to eat?"

Xiang Nanzhi nodded; he couldn't let himself go hungry.

These were all dried by Shen's mother, who originally intended for him to take them to the city to eat, but the city has everything, and Shen Shixun didn't need these things to fill his stomach.

He unzipped the bag and stuffed the jerky, bag and all, into his bag. "Take it with you if you want some."

Shen's mother stood at the door, holding a wooden stick in her hand. Shen Jila supported her, saying, "Brother, don't worry about going. I'll take care of Mother."

"Sehun."

With tears in her eyes, Chen's mother touched his face and said, "I will take care of things concerning Gila and Rooney. As the older brother, you must take care of yourself in the city."

"Mom, I will come back soon."

When Shen's mother took Xiang Nanzhi's hand, she was stunned for a moment. Shen's mother was speaking in words she couldn't understand, but she felt something in her heart, as if she could sense Shen's mother's feelings. Shen's mother then took Shen Shixun's hand and said a few more words.

The two said goodbye to them. The old black dog behind them howled at Shen Shixun's back. Shen Shixun opened his backpack and threw in a piece of dried meat. While the mastiff lowered its head, he grabbed the woman's hand and quickened his pace.

Herds of cattle and sheep grazed and chewed on the grassland behind them.

Xiang Nanzhi walked behind the man, who was carrying things. She didn't care about anything else, only about herself. However, the terrain was bad, and walking was difficult.

As Xiang Nanzhi stepped on the pebbles, she felt her feet chafing and hurting.

"I want to call my dad."

She suddenly said, "Can I use your phone?"

She's been out of contact for several days; her family must be worried sick. Her older brothers must be going crazy trying to find her.

"No signal."

Saigon is a special place. The tribes there have always been nomadic people who are self-reliant and used to relying on the weather for their livelihood on the grasslands.

The outside world is developing very quickly, and some areas of the tribe have water heaters, but overall, most indigenous people are not used to using them.

Everyone has a mobile phone, but people prefer going out hunting to looking at their phones, so they leave them indoors and don't use them much.

Shen Shixun bought a cell phone for his younger sister Shen Jila last year, but the phone was just decoration for Shen Jila. Calling him was a matter of luck. If she heard it, she would answer it, but if she didn't hear it, she wouldn't bother to check the phone or call him back.

Shen Shixun would often disconnect after saying just a few words to her. The signal was poor on the grassland, and sometimes Shen Jila would not charge her phone for ten days or half a month.

This time, when Xiang Nanzhi came, everyone was a little more considerate and managed to share some electricity.

Looking south, it was clear that there was indeed no signal.
