Xiang Jingyi and Xiang Ciyuan were both a little frightened, but when they got to the ward, they still lingered around the little girl, smiling from ear to ear.
As the mother watched all this, the corners of her mouth unconsciously turned up.
All of this was originally peaceful and idyllic.
Just then, blood gushed from the woman's body after she had just given birth. It was too late when she was taken to the emergency room; the blood bank didn't have any usable blood. By the time they found her, she had already stopped breathing.
Xiang Jingyi remembers clearly that when her father arrived, her mother had already been covered with a white sheet. Xiang Nanzhi was born but hadn't even had a chance to drink a drop of milk or be held by her mother before she passed away.
Therefore, the whole family doted on this younger sister. To outsiders, she was the most beloved little princess of the Xiang family, but she was also the most pitiful of the three siblings.
Afraid of upsetting her by telling her the truth, Xiang Zhengyi never mentioned to anyone how Lin Chunxia died. Xiang Nanzhi had never met her mother since childhood, but would ask about her when she got a little older. She knew her mother died of illness and didn't think too much about it.
Before his mother gave birth, his uncle came to see her and they argued in the same room. Xiang Jingyi didn't tell anyone about this. For some reason, he was only a few years old at the time and was particularly afraid, always feeling that something bad was going to happen.
As he grew older, the memory became even more painful. The image of his mother, pale-faced, clutching her torn dress, forcing a smile at him, brought him even more agony.
He's a man too, and he knew it wouldn't be anything good.
If he doesn't speak up, his father will mourn his mother for the rest of his life; but if he does speak up, whether or not it's what he thinks, it will damage his mother's reputation.
Inside the room, Xiang Nanzhi covered her face with the blanket, and Shen Shixun sat on the edge of the bed and patted her with his hand.
He had just seen that Xiang Nanzhi apologized because she didn't want him to back down. He felt a mix of emotions; how could a grown man like him need her to take the blame for him? It was too pathetic.
"Xiang Nanzhi... get up."
"You can go out now."
Her voice choked with emotion; she felt wronged, and at the same time, a surge of anger welled up inside her, yet she couldn't find a way to vent it.
Seeing her so embarrassed made Shen Shixun feel even more frustrated.
The man ruthlessly yanked the blanket off, saying, "Stop crying, what's the use of crying?"
Xiang Nanzhi curled up on the bed, her eyes swollen from crying. "My dad, he knew all along... but he didn't believe me."
"He doesn't disbelieve you."
As a man, Shen Shixun saw it all clearly. He leaned over and wiped away the woman's tears. Seeing her aggrieved and angry expression, he felt both amused and heartbroken.
Xiang Nanzhi buried her face in the pillow, "Don't look, you look ugly when you cry."
"Not ugly, it's good-looking."
“Your dad doesn’t disbelieve you. He knows what’s going on and he knows they’re all after that piece of land.”
"Then he should give it back, even though he clearly refused."
“The other party was prepared, and your father was trying to save face for your relatives and your uncle’s family.”
Xiang Nanzhi sat up in bed. "Shen Shixun, let's not stay here anymore. Let's go back to your place."
The moment she was there, she recalled how she had apologized to Xiang Yunduan and how Xiang Zhengyi had scolded her.
He was too harsh on her because of her uncle's family, and almost made Shen Shixun apologize to them.
——
Xiang Zhengyi had work to do, but he didn't leave home. He just sat in the living room. After a while, he saw Xiang Nanzhi wearing a mask and a baseball cap, and wearing a sun protection shirt, walking behind the man.
Shen Shixun carried a large suitcase and slung a backpack over Nan Zhi's shoulder. "Zhi Zhi... Dad just now..."
Xiang Nanzhi ignored his explanation and put her wallet on the table. "I don't want the card you gave me. You can have it all. I'm not taking anything with me. I'm taking it with me from Shen Shixun."
“Zhizhi, Dad knows you’re upset, but your uncle is my older brother. Yun Duan is a cunning child.”
"Give me the land, and the money is all yours. I won't rely on you anymore; I'll support myself."
She said this with a sob in her voice; Xiang Nanzhi had never suffered such injustice in her entire life.
Shen Shixun tried to persuade her, but she wouldn't listen and insisted on arguing with Xiang Zhengyi. If he continued to refuse, Xiang Nanzhi might think that he also disliked her.
Just as the man was reaching out to Nan Zhi, Shen Shixun noticed the old man's red eyes and wanted to explain, "Dad, she actually..."
"Shen Shixun, let's go, let's leave this place."
She grabbed Shen Shixun's hand and pulled him outside. The man, carrying a suitcase, wanted to say something to Xiang Zhengyi, but Xiang Zhengyi chased after them, "Zhizhi... Dad knows it's not your fault, Zhizhi, Dad..."
Xiang Nanzhi didn't even turn her head. She grabbed the car keys, got in the car, and drove off in a flash while Xiang Zhengyi was still walking outside.
After a few blocks, we stopped at the nearest stop. "You can drive."
She didn't seem to be in as much pain as before. She got out of the driver's seat, and Shen Shixun sat in the driver's seat. He glanced at the woman next to him, and Xiang Nanzhi calmly fastened her seatbelt and let out a long sigh.
"Are you calm now?"
"That's about it."
After all that commotion, her stomach was growling with hunger. "Shen Shixun, put the things over there, let's go eat together."
The man patted her head. "Xiang Nanzhi, don't you think you're being childish?"
Do you like my childishness?
Honestly, I quite like it; it has a kind of cuteness that's hard to describe.
She had just been crying her eyes out when her tantrum about running away from home made her feel instantly better.
In the summer, clothes were hung out to dry around the house where Shen Shixun lived. Most people went to work, while a small number of factory workers who worked the night shift stayed home during the day. Some clothes were left on the ground and no one picked them up. They were blown by the wind and mixed with the mud and dust on the ground.
