Xiang Nanzhi verbally said he forgave Jiang Yao and wouldn't hold her past with Song Ze against her, but that didn't mean he completely trusted her.
The fact that they insist on meeting secretly outside suggests they might have some ulterior motive.
At the restaurant, Xiang Nanzhi's car was parked at the entrance. Jiang Yao came to greet her personally. Ma Xiaorong and her bodyguards were in the underground parking lot, monitoring and protecting her safety at all times.
The two sat facing each other, and Jiang Yao tried to speak several times but found it difficult to utter a word.
Xiang Nanzhi ordered the food and sat waiting for her, but she didn't speak. "What exactly do you want to say?" he asked.
She's not in a good mood today; she's still upset about what Shen Shixun did to her.
How have you been feeling lately?
"fine."
She seems to have stopped experiencing morning sickness for a while now. She used to vomit a lot, but now she doesn't vomit at all, and her appetite has improved.
"Was the culprit found in the accident at the construction site that night?"
"not yet."
Jiang Yao gripped the water glass tightly with both hands. "What if I said I did it?"
"I'll have the police arrest you."
Xiang Nanzhi answered quickly, without the slightest hesitation, but her eyes deepened after she finished speaking.
Jiang Yao had something very important to tell her, was this it?
“I always thought I was the only one in control of this matter, but I later found out that wasn’t the case.”
Before she could react, Jiang Yao took the initiative to confess, "I thought I did it behind Song Ze's back, but I later found out that he probably knew and was just tacitly approving of what I did."
"I was so stupid, Nanji. I actually thought I could hide it from him..."
"Jiang Yao...you..."
“I’m sorry, you can call the police if you want, you can do whatever you want. I know I was wrong, but I was forced into this situation. If life had given me even a little breathing room, I wouldn’t have ended up like this.”
Jiang Yao looked up at her, fully prepared. "After you and Song Ze broke up, he used this to threaten me. Before I completely broke up with Song Ze, someone used the same method to retaliate against me. From then on, I knew I couldn't hide it anymore."
"I admit that I knew your identity before we became friends, and I wanted to get a life-saving charm from you so that Liu Wenli and Jiang Yuxin could not bully me. But Nan Zhi, what did I do wrong? What should I do?"
Jiang Yao tossed out a photo. Xiang Nanzhi glanced at it; the photo showed Jiang Yao and Xiang Ciyuan. She paused, stunned. "You and my second brother..."
“I was with Ciyuan, but he dumped me after I got pregnant.”
"Pregnant?"
When did this happen? How come she had no idea? Xiang Nanzhi felt like her brain couldn't process it for a while.
"When I was eighteen..."
Xiang Nanzhi's eyes widened.
“I admit that there was an element of revenge in it, but now I know I was wrong. I don’t want anyone to use this against me or take advantage of me. You decide what to do. I’m fine with anything.”
As Jiang Yao spoke, she suddenly stood up, as if she were going to her death. She couldn't beat Song Ze, and it would be foolish of her to be played by this man again.
After the incident, Song Ze will only push her out and kick her aside immediately, leaving her to bear all the responsibility alone. She will never be able to turn her life around.
Compared to Song Ze, Xiang Nanzhi at least wouldn't actively harm others.
Xiang Nanzhi took a deep breath. "Sit down and tell me everything clearly."
“Ciyuan didn’t want you to know about this. Everyone kept it from you, but it really happened… I’m so sorry…”
If Jiang Yao hadn't done that, she wouldn't have been able to see Song Ze's true colors, and she would have had no chance of getting entangled with Shen Shixun.
Of course, Jiang Yao was essentially wrong in this matter, and she shouldn't be easily forgiven just because the outcome was acceptable.
Jiang Yao sat down and told Xiang Nanzhi everything about her relationship with Xiang Ciyuan, including how she was dumped by Xiang Ciyuan, how she was alone again, how she met Song Ze, and how they broke up.
Jiang Yao's nonchalant attitude towards life and death left Xiang Nanzhi with no choice but to believe her.
She downed her coffee in one gulp, which helped her catch her breath a little.
Jiang Yao's words didn't sound like a lie, but her second brother was just a little willful and not as law-abiding as her eldest brother. How could he be such a scumbag?
According to Jiang Yao's description, her second brother is a complete scumbag. After having sex and confirming their relationship, he did not take responsibility and did not give Jiang Yao any explanation. He was out having a good time and not even answering her calls, treating her like she was invisible.
So much so that when Jiang Yao became pregnant, he just found it troublesome and dumped the mess on his father to handle, completely unwilling to spend any time on it.
Is this still the second brother she knows?
“Jiang Yao, I recorded everything you said. You have to take responsibility for what you said.”
Jiang Yao was somewhat taken aback, then nodded, "I stand by what I said. Not a single word of it is a lie; it's all true."
"As for what you want to do, I'll do whatever you say."
It was wrong of Jiang Yao to scheme against her, wrong of using Song Ze's phone to trick her into going to the suburbs, wrong of making her lose her virginity and become a laughing stock, and wrong of marrying Shen Shixun in a daze.
But the Xiang family owes her an explanation... She harbors resentment towards the Xiang family, yet it seems she can't find any fault with them.
Reason told her that Xiang Nanzhi should send this woman to jail. These are two separate issues and should not be confused. Even if her second brother did something terrible to her, it takes two to tango, and she had not done anything to wrong Jiang Yao. It would be wrong to pin the blame on her.
But Jiang Yao's pale face reminded her of the pitiful state she was in when Liu Wenli and Jiang Yuxin bullied her back then.
She was used to being at home and felt that all families were similar to hers, with parents hoping for the best for their children and siblings living in harmony.
But the Jiang family was different. She once gave Jiang Yao a rabbit, which Jiang Yuxin personally threw off the building and killed in front of Jiang Yao.
Jiang Yao was angry, but no one in the Jiang family was willing to stand by her side.
At this point, Xiang Nanzhi became less resolute. She looked at the dejected Jiang Yao and remained silent for a long while.
"Should I call the police? I'm willing to go to jail. I have no hope for the future anyway."
No one cared about her. In Xiang Ciyuan's eyes, she was a rotten person, and in Song Ze's eyes, she was even more trash. Rather than becoming a puppet to be used by others, she would rather go to jail, at least that would be a quicker and more painless experience.
"I haven't figured out what to do yet, but I appreciate your honesty."
She found out what had happened.
As I stepped out of the restaurant, it was completely dark. The sunset across the way was tinged with peach and pink, intertwined in a beautiful, ambiguous way.
