The locals couldn't understand what Xiang Nanzhi was saying, but Shen Shixun understood. He raised his hand to comfort her, but didn't touch her, and chuckled dryly, "It's not surprising to have wolves, there are bears too."
"Waaah..."
"Okay, stop crying."
"Don't cry, I'll take you back."
Shen Shixun returned to see her mother, but she never expected that Xiang Nanzhi would come to her hometown to find her, and that he would come alone.
These days, there are quite a few people who want to come to Saigon, but most of them go where there are many people. A small number of people come for adventure, but they only do so if they have acquaintances there.
It's too dangerous to come to these places without knowing anyone. Han people have never lived on the grasslands and don't know how dangerous they are.
Several female college students once came here for tourism. Being unfamiliar with the area, they set up tents and tried to survive in the wild, but were devoured by wolves until nothing was left.
Shen Jila vacated her tent for Xiang Nanzhi to live in, and the news spread throughout the tribe in no time.
"Beautiful, Xun-ge is so lucky."
"That woman is lucky. Brother Xun is the sharpshooter of our grasslands. Whoever marries him will never have to worry about food and drink for the rest of her life."
"People from the city are so pretentious; they scream in fear at the sight of a few wolves."
"Rooney and the others said that when they heard the wolf calling to his companions, it meant he was going to kill someone. They followed the sound and found the person. Luckily, they got there early."
"If you come to the grasslands without a single knife, you'll die as soon as the wolves arrive."
Shen Shixun went to the river to fetch water and poured it into a basin for her. He touched Nanzhi's feet and said, "It's too cold, your feet are cold."
Before coming here, I wanted to find him and slap him twice. After arriving, I almost lost my life. Xiang Nanzhi didn't know anyone here except him.
Shen Shixun frowned, picked up the basin and went outside again. Xiang Nanzhi put on the slightly prickly straw sandals, her feet dangling inside them.
There were stars at night, and looking into the distance, the stars seemed to merge with the grassland. The man carried firewood on his back and threw a few sticks into the stove, where they crackled and popped as they burned.
Xiang Nanzhi looked at it, then lowered the curtain again. "Sister, this is for you, this is for you."
Shen Jila doesn't speak much Chinese, but Xiang Nanzhi could tell from her gestures that she wanted her to wear it.
Hearing the wolf howl terrified her. She frantically searched for her belongings in her luggage, and in her panic, the entire suitcase fell down, along with her phone, which also fell into the valley.
Smoke rose from the valley, and through the dense forest, several birds flapped their wings and flew towards the other side of the sky...
“Ah Jia… Ah Jia…”
"Thank you."
Xiang Nan learned of Xie's words and returned to her room to put on her clothes. Just then, Shen Shixun came in. She put the clothes on the bed and sat up straight.
The man made no attempt to hide anything, saying, "That's enough, it's hot."
"oh."
Xiang Nanzhi put her foot in, but quickly pulled it back because it was so hot. Shen Shixun frowned again, a hint of impatience in his eyes, "It's hot again?"
She nodded. "It's hot."
"What a hassle,"
Shen Shixun carried a load of water back, and when he returned, Xiang Nanzhi was soaking her feet.
She didn't know there was no running water on the grassland, and pointed to the basin, "That, the temperature is just right now."
Shen Shixun poured the water he had fetched into the vat. Xiang Nanzhi stood at the door watching him. The man had a broad back, and the muscles on his body subtly revealed their original shape as he moved.
She knew that Shen Shixun's family was poor, but she thought that poverty meant living in a very old house. However, she did not expect that Shen Shixun's family did not even have a decent house.
To be precise, none of the people here have houses; they live in tents.
In this ancient city, it's unimaginable for anyone not to have a house with four walls that can shelter them from the wind and rain.
She was lost in thought when the man approached her. "Is there anything else you want?"
"Just now……"
"What?"
"That woman..."
"My sister."
"She kept saying 'A-Jia, A-Jia,' but what does 'A-Jia' mean?"
Shen Shixun laughed out loud as if he had heard a funny joke, but then he thought that she was from Gucheng and probably had never even been to the countryside of Gucheng, so how could she understand the Gong language?
“A-jia means elder sister in the Gong language.”
Xiang Nanzhi lowered her head, her face flushed, and turned to sit back on the bed.
After finishing his work, Shen Shixun came in. Xiang Nanzhi sat on the bed, no longer displaying the spoiled young lady temperament she had in the ancient city, and no longer resorting to hitting or scolding him whenever she saw him.
The wolf frightened her into becoming much more docile.
At first glance, the woman appeared gentle and obedient, dressed in an embroidered floral dress. She had shed her usual arrogance and haughtiness, losing all her charisma. The floral dress accentuated her snow-white skin, and her large, bright eyes resembled stars in the sky.
When Xiang Nanzhi looked at him, the man carried a basin into the house, draped a towel over a horizontal line, and threw the basin in the corner.
The room was cluttered with many things, yet organized in a chaotic way. The ground was covered in grass, and only the tent overhead provided shelter from the wind and rain.
"Go to sleep."
Shen Shixun grabbed a quilt from the wooden cabinet, spread it out on the floor, and slept half of it while covering himself with the other half.
Xiang Nanzhi: ...
Did he just fall asleep like that?
You're sleeping on the floor?
Shen Shixun glanced at her, his eyes seeming to say, "What else?"
"Don't you have anywhere else in your house?"
“Jila sleeps with my mother, so this room is the only empty one.”
"Don't you have any other rooms in your tent?"
Shen Shixun didn't want to explain such a stupid question, so he closed his eyes and stopped looking at her.
The man was carefree and had no worries; he was used to going to bed on time.
Xiang Nanzhi couldn't sleep. This highland region had nothing but wild beasts. What if a wolf suddenly appeared again, like it did at dusk?
She was clutching the dog-skin rug, trembling all over. Shen Shixun, who had been asleep, sat up when he sensed her movement. "What's wrong?"
