Chapter 22 "I only want you, I only have you"
Seeing Lu Juan standing aside, his eyes were fixed on his elder sister.
Ji Qingwu asked, "Brother-in-law, what do you think about the maids and concubines in your room?"
Hearing this, Lu Juan looked at Ji Qingwu.
Her eyes were bright, without the aggressive aura from before, and her expression had returned to its gentle state, as clear and bright as the crescent moon in the sky.
Moreover, she was willing to call him brother-in-law gently again.
There was a flash of helplessness in Lu Juan's eyes. It seemed that his efforts of pretending to be deaf and dumb just now were not in vain.
Today, he finally got to know the temper of this fifth sister.
He spoke directly without any hesitation: "Just as Fifth Sister said, it doesn't matter if I don't have children. I have Qingrong, so I have no regrets."
These words are very powerful.
Cui seemed to be about to explode with anger. She put down her pen weakly and pounded her chest.
Ji Qingwu was like a supervisor, not allowing her to slack off, and reminded her: "Madam, write faster, it's almost dark."
Veins on Cui's hands were throbbing. The written document was so powerful that every word was as sharp as a knife.
Lu Juan's steady and affectionate voice reached Ji Qingrong's ears, causing her to shudder and come back to her senses completely.
The prince knew how to grasp the opportunity very well. When he saw her expression soften, he strode over and took her hand without giving her a chance to dodge.
"Arong."
Ji Qingrong tried to shake him off, but his big hand held her tighter.
Lu Juan originally wanted to wait for Ji Qingrong to figure things out herself, and he had been waiting for three years.
But when he saw his wife's red eyes, he gave up.
His Adam's apple rolled, and he explained in a low voice: "Arong, I was careless with my words. I wanted to marry you as soon as possible, so I misled mother and caused such a misunderstanding. I am sorry for making you bear all this."
Such a straightforward explanation and apology.
Ji Qingwu, the mother's family member, suddenly felt relieved.
I don’t know how the person involved feels.
Ji Qingrong didn't know whether to believe him or not, so she just stared at his lips in a daze.
Seeing her dazed look, Lu Juan took her hand, pressed it against his chest, and said affectionately, "Arong, do you still remember that snowy day three years ago?"
Three years ago, it was snowing.
Ji Qingrong's pupils trembled.
That day was the day when Luo Chi, the second son of the Minister of Rites, came to Ji's house to discuss marriage with her, but things did not go as planned because of heavy snow and the carriage broke down on the road.
She had planned to meet Luo Chi the next day when the weather cleared up. If both parties were satisfied, the marriage would be settled.
But the next day...
The man in Ji Qingrong's memory coincides with Lu Juan in front of her.
Early in the morning, the younger prince of the Loyal and Brave Marquisate knocked on the door of the Ji family, bringing a matchmaker and betrothal gifts, saying that he was there to propose marriage, which shocked everyone in the house.
Lu Juan rubbed her hand, "Arong, blame me for being reckless and scaring you, but you still agreed because I said--"
He looked at Ji Qingrong with emotion.
Once again, "I only want you, only you."
It was because of this promise that Ji Qingrong was moved.
She was raised and doted on by her mother, and then married into the Marquis's Mansion and became Mrs. Lu. She experienced all the grievances and difficulties she had experienced over the years.
The two of them looked at each other, although they didn't say anything. In this atmosphere, Ji Qingwu only regretted that he didn't have flower petals at hand, otherwise he really wanted to throw them over.
She smiled at Cui and said, "Madam, if you haven't finished writing yet, we can move to the study next door to write, so as not to disturb them."
Cui's face turned blue and purple, and it was obvious that she was heartbroken after hearing her son's confession.
She snorted, threw the document in her hand to Ji Qingwu, then stood up and left Ninghua Hall.
Ji Qingwu thought of something and called Shang Xiner to go out together.
Only the couple were left in the house.
Lu Juan first lowered his head and stroked her black hair.
"Arong."
Such a gentle sigh made Ji Qingrong's eyes misty.
She was like a child who had suffered great injustice. She threw herself into Lu Juan's arms and cried non-stop, leaving water marks on the front of his brocade robe.
She cried and complained: "You said that you only have me, but you didn't do that! You have concubines and maids, you lied to me!"
It was the first time that Lu Juan saw Ji Qingrong in such a ferocious state.
"My mother forced them on me." He said innocently, "I never touched them."
Lu Juan held her face in his hands and asked seriously, "Arong, if you are unhappy, you should speak out. Mother sent someone here, but you insisted on pretending to be magnanimous and agreed to this matter first. Do you know how I felt when I heard the news when I got home?"
His face was darker than the bottom of a pot at that time.
The promise he made to her was broken so easily by her, which made him angry for a long time.
After Ji Qingrong finished crying, she belatedly felt a little ashamed. She replied in a low voice: "What can I say? I have never been pregnant. Everyone in the mansion is watching me. You can't imagine how much pressure I am under."
"Arong, who do you think I am?"
Lu Juan pinched her smooth face and said what had been buried in his heart for a long time.
"I am your husband. When things go wrong, I hope you can rely on me and trust me, but you never said anything."
Lu Juan's people would report to him every day what happened in Ninghua Hall. He knew about the difficulties Ji Qingrong encountered in the mansion and had even prepared ways to deal with them for her.
But she was very stubborn and never mentioned anything to Lu Juan.
Ji Qingrong gradually understood why Lu Juan's weather was sometimes unstable.
So it was because I didn’t complain to him? Does he care so much about her every word and action?
She felt like a honey pot had been overturned.
But she still said stubbornly, "The first time you lost your temper with me, you took a long time to calm down. I was just afraid that if I said too much, I would make you angry and affect our relationship as husband and wife."
Hearing this remark, Lu Juan also remembered why he was angry last time.
Lu Yun and Ji Qingrong had an argument over a hairpin. Lu Yun was young but had a bad temper. She was spoiled too much by the lady dowager and had to get whatever she wanted.
But the hairpin was Ji Qingrong's dowry and had a special meaning, so she was unwilling to give it to him.
Lu Yun pushed her and went to the old lady to complain, confusing right and wrong and talking nonsense, causing Ji Qingrong to be scolded.
Before Lu Juan reached his home, someone reported the whole story to him. He went to Lu Yun's yard first and gave his sister a good scolding. If she disrespected her sister-in-law again, he would send her to a nunnery to practice for a few years.
When he returned to Ninghua Hall, Ji Qingrong still greeted him with a smile. If it weren't for her red and swollen eyes, it would be hard to tell the slightest flaw.
The words of comfort that Lu Juan had prepared with all his heart were of no use.
The closest or the most distant husband and wife.
This is what it means to never consider yourself as someone who can be relied upon.
From then on, Lu Juan and Ji Qingrong started competing with each other, and Lu Juan was determined to wait for her to give in on her own initiative. Three years passed in this awkward manner.
"Arong."
"I regret it."
