"Marry him! Marry him!"
The villagers emerged from behind the stone, clapping and cheering loudly.
They only found out today that Zhou Jiuzhen, this simpleton, wanted to divorce his wife, actually to pursue her.
Instead of having a ready-made wife, they insist on reheating her.
Of course, they kept their mouths shut and continued to play out Commander Zhou's pursuit of his wife.
Hearing the cheers from those around him, Zhou Jiuzhen's face turned bright red, and his heart pounded as he feared she would reject him.
Ling Huanwu turned around to look at him, pursing her lips as she was about to reach out and take the ring when suddenly a figure darted out from the crowd and knocked the ring box out of Zhou Jiuzhen's hand with a "smack".
"You can't marry him. He's a short-lived man. If you marry him, you'll become a widow!"
Qin Jin was panting heavily; his hand was trembling as he knocked the ring box away.
The entire room fell silent for a moment, and the smiles on their faces froze completely when they heard the words "short-lived ghost".
Lin Xiaoqin was also in the crowd. Just moments ago, she was feeling relieved that the man she had once set her sights on wasn't a jerk, and she was happily basking in the sweet moments between the two of them when she turned around and encountered this mood-killer.
She jumped out and berated Qin Jinshen, "Did you escape from the same mental hospital as that Song Yaoyao? You always say that people are short-lived, believe me or not, we'll turn you into a short-lived ghost right now!"
"Yeah, Commander Zhou is such a good person, how could you curse him..."
The surrounding crowd rose up against him, their eyes filled with condemnation as they looked at Qin Jinshen.
But Ling Huanwu's emotions were even more turbulent than theirs. She stared at Qin Jinshen's panicked eyes, fear slowly creeping up her spine, and a terrible conjecture suddenly popped into her head.
Just as she was surprised that she had such an idea, an aunt from the family compound rushed over from a distance and hurriedly pulled Ling Huanwu back.
"Something terrible has happened! Your sister is about to give birth at the clinic, and it seems like she's having a difficult labor. The midwife keeps asking whether to save the mother or the baby, and your mother-in-law is going crazy with worry. But Zhou Shuyao refuses to go to the clinic, saying he'll only decide whether to go or not once you get there. You'd better go and see her!"
Ling Huanwu's head exploded with a bang, and her legs trembled involuntarily.
She recalled the near-death experience she had during childbirth in her previous life.
The villagers crowded around her as they hurried back, and Ling Huanwu walked towards the clinic step by step, as if she had lost her soul.
Zhou Jiuzhen picked up the ring but didn't have time to settle accounts with Qin Jinshen. He hurriedly went straight to the toilet paper store.
We haven't arrived at the clinic yet.
From a great distance, one mournful wail after another could be heard.
At the door, the old woman clasped her hands together and kept praying for Buddha's blessing.
Almost the entire village had gathered here.
But the father of the woman giving birth inside was nowhere to be seen.
Even now, Zhou Shuyao stubbornly stayed on the drying ground, waiting for Ling Huanwu to come over before he would go.
Ling Huanwu sped all the way to the sunbathing field.
On the empty drying ground, Zhou Shuyao's eyes lit up when he saw Ling Huanwu running towards him. The next second, she slapped him so hard that his face twisted and blood seeped from the corner of his mouth.
"Zhou Shuyao, you're a beast! Do you even deserve to be a father?"
Ling Huanwu almost shouted it out.
She couldn't understand who this man was putting on this show of affection for.
The words he spoke to her during their last meeting in her previous life were etched into her very being.
He looked at her with disdain: "Ling Huanwu, you're almost fifty, you're already past your prime. Don't threaten me with divorce every day. You're no longer the delicate capitalist's daughter you used to be. If you leave me, who will want you!"
After saying that, he threw her suitcase out the door, saying, "If you dare to leave today, don't come back to me later!"
In her previous life, she left so resolutely, without any regrets.
She originally thought that he must be tired of their monotonous and dull life together and was already eager for her to leave.
But who is he trying to impress by putting on this regretful act?
Zhou Shuyao turned his head away, not daring to look at her, but in the next instant he knelt straight down in front of her, tears falling like beads from a broken string.
"Huanhuan, I regret it. I don't want other people's children. I can't go to see her give birth. You definitely won't forgive me then."
Do you know how I died in my previous life?
He was trembling as he held her trouser leg, as if recalling some painful past event.
“When I saw you lying motionless in the funeral home, my world collapsed. I couldn’t believe you were dead, so I brought you home.”
"Everyone tells me we've been married for so long, we're tired of each other, and who in this world can't live without whom?"
"But I just can't live like this. Without you, I feel like I can't breathe."
"I couldn't sleep at night, and my hair was falling out in clumps, but that woman kept coming to our door with her child, demanding recognition..."
"Later, I killed her... They all said I was mentally unstable, and my sons sent me to a mental hospital."
"I'm not crazy at all, I just miss you so much, Huanhuan. I fell in love with you at first sight. Those years were the happiest days of my life. I can't live without you!"
"They wouldn't let me go home to find you, so I had no choice but to come to the rooftop to find you..."
"Thank goodness I've finally found you. I can't let you go, or I'll die..."
The entire dark drying ground was eerily quiet, save for his heart-wrenching voice.
Zhou Shuyao held onto her slender trouser leg as if it were the last piece of driftwood he could cling to.
He knew that if he didn't take advantage of Zhou Jiuzhen's amnesia, he would never have another chance.
