The people in the room fell silent for a moment.
Only the deafening chirping of cicadas outside remained.
Zhou Jiuzhen coughed lightly, responded softly with a blank face, then sat down on the chair with the woman's waist as soft as cotton in his arms, and turned to find a bowl to put food in.
The guard, Xiao Wang, blushed and, with great tact, quickly pulled Lin Xiaoqin, who was holding a broom and had red eyes, out of the house. "Commander, Madam, you should get some rest. I'll take Comrade Xiao Lin home."
After saying that, he thoughtfully closed the door for the two of them.
Zhou Jiuzhen took a bowl that was as big as Ling Huanwu's face and filled it with food from the enamel basin.
Looking at the golden-yellow pieces in the bowl, Ling Huanwu realized that these were sweet potato slices, a specialty of the southern coastal region.
In her previous life, she had experienced both hardship and the finest delicacies.
But I've never eaten this before.
Zhou Jiuzhen had probably never fed anyone before. He mashed the sweet potato slice several times with a spoon before scooping up a small piece, blowing on it, and then feeding it to Ling Huanwu. "It's a little hot, eat slowly."
Ling Huanwu didn't stand on ceremony. She opened her small mouth and bit the large ceramic spoon, swallowing a whole mouthful of sweet potato slices.
The moment she landed on the island, she realized she had been careless. She hadn't made any thorough preparations to hide on the island with the army in order to avoid Qin Jinshen.
Since she chose to live on a resource-scarce island, she must have stocked up on food and other necessities beforehand, otherwise she would definitely suffer in the next two years.
In a place where even buying things is difficult, her hoarding of a large amount of gold bars and antiques is simply a waste of space.
Ultimately, it's because the man in front of her refuses to touch her, leaving her with pitifully little space.
The next ship to the island will take another month.
She still needs to find a way to expand the space before the next ship docks so that she can go out and stock up on supplies to improve life on the island.
Ling Huanwu smacked her lips against the sweet and soft sweet potato in her mouth, stretched her long, slender, fair neck, and leaned closer to Zhou Jiuzhen, "When will our marriage application be approved?"
"The political commissar and the others haven't arrived yet; they probably won't be here until next month, so there's no rush..."
Zhou Jiuzhen wiped the sweat from his forehead, blew on a spoonful of sweet potato soup, and turned his head just as Ling Huanwu suddenly leaned in. Caught off guard, his lips brushed against the corner of her lips.
It's incredibly soft!
Ling Huanwu's eyes widened, her red lips, which had just been wiped, trembled with excitement.
"What did you say? Another month!"
"Is there any meat here? I'll go crazy if there's no meat!"
Without realizing it, her voice unconsciously rose in pitch.
Zhou Jiuzhen licked the tiny bit of saliva that had been sprayed onto his lips, and with a straight face, he earnestly reassured her, "Although there's no meat to eat here, there's at least some seafood..."
Before she could finish speaking, Ling Huanwu felt a sudden dizziness.
Does this mean she has to endure this for a month without even a single piece of meat?
"Comrade Ling, Huanwu, Huanwu... What's wrong with you? Wake up..."
Hearing the calls in her ear, Ling Huanwu slumped limply into someone's arms...
*
Qin Jinshen, along with a group of people, escorted Song Yaoyao and Zhou Shuyao, and arrived at this coastal city in a grand procession after several days of travel in several jeeps.
As darkness fell, several guards pitched tents in the suburbs.
Zhou Shuyao and Song Yaoyao were left tied up under a tree and bitten by mosquitoes.
Qin Jinshen drank beer to cool off, his gaze lingering on the distant sea, as if looking at someone.
Despite his irregular eating habits, Zhou Shuyao hadn't given up and continued to nag Qin Jinshen, "Brother, what grudge do you have against my sister-in-law? Why are you arresting us?"
"Also, if you don't let us go, my brother will write back to the village and when he finds out we've disappeared, he'll definitely come after you."
"You should know that my brother is the regimental commander. If you release us now, I will beg him to let you go later."
He talked until his throat was dry, but Qin Jinshen remained the same as always, not even bothering to acknowledge him.
Song Yaoyao nudged Zhou Shuyao with her hand, signaling him to stop talking.
Zhou Shuyao then awkwardly shut his mouth and stopped talking to Qin Jinshen. Instead, he questioned Song Yaoyao, "What's going on with that guy surnamed Qin? Why did he say that you pushed his sister and then frame your sister-in-law for pushing her?"
Song Yaoyao's expression changed drastically, and her heart pounded.
She never expected that before the Qin family's daughter had even woken up, Qin Jinshen would already know that she was the one who made Ling Huanwu take the blame.
In his previous life, Qin Jinshen learned of this news more than a year later.
Later, the domestic abuser she stole from in the army was supposedly arranged by Qin Jinshen to frame her, in order to make her divorce Zhou Jiuzhen and make her a disgraced woman in the entire family compound, hated by everyone.
In the years that followed, she was tortured beyond recognition by that abusive man, and only managed to escape after going through countless hardships.
In this life, she finally managed to remarry, and she absolutely cannot let the tragedy repeat itself.
Song Yaoyao's eyes rolled back, and tears instantly streamed down her face.
"Brother Yao, there's something I've never told you. This Qin Jinshen and your sister-in-law have actually been having an affair for a long time!"
She spoke very softly, looking hesitant and stammering, which shocked Zhou Shuyao.
Seeing that Zhou Shuyao was only half convinced, Song Yaoyao continued to sow discord.
"Back then, my parents and I didn't know who pushed the Qin family's daughter. On the contrary, it was the two of them who made us give false testimony so that they could legitimately do dirty things at home under the pretext of tormenting my sister-in-law!"
"You don't know, the two of them spent a whole half month together in the basement. You can ask any of the guards in the Ling family about this, and they will all know."
