"Ling Huanwu, those are your parents, why should I be the one to support them?"
"I thought that if I flattered those two old geezers, they would give me the inheritance. Who knew they were both traitors themselves? The inheritance was already given to you by your dead grandfather. If I had known there would be no inheritance, I wouldn't have fawned over those two old geezers!"
"I've been taking care of them for so long, what's wrong with using them to do some things for me? It's good that I can send them to prison and then I won't have to support them anymore..."
Hearing Song Yaoyao's ferocious words, Ling Huanwu's eyes turned red, and she slapped her right cheek again. "You can disrespect your parents who raised you, but you have no right to disrespect my grandfather!"
Song Yaoyao, clutching her burning cheek, finally snapped and exploded, "Aaaaah! What right do you have to hit me? Let me tell you, if those two old bastards go to jail, you'll be the regimental commander's wife sooner or later, and all that property will be snatched away by someone else. Give me that property now..."
Despite being heavily pregnant, she rushed over with a contorted face to pull Ling Huanwu away.
Ling Huanwu calmly dodged her pull and turned to open the door.
The moment the door opened, Song Yaoyao, who had lunged forward with bared teeth and claws, froze at the doorway, her fierce and twisted expression frozen in place as she looked in terror at the group of people standing in the doorway.
Outside, Zhou Jiuzhen, accompanied by two island police officers and a large group of people behind him—all production team leaders from various villages—stared intently at her, their angry expressions seeming as if they wanted to devour her alive.
"Comrade Song, how could you damage the collective property for personal reasons? Your behavior deserves to be executed!"
"If you weren't pregnant, we would have killed you. You know, that's the grain we worked so hard to grow! Our children are waiting to eat white rice!"
The villagers chattered amongst themselves, their sun-darkened faces radiating simplicity. Their impoverished lives couldn't extinguish their drive to work hard, though they were nearly bent over by the weight of the wilting rice stalks.
But these words and those looks did nothing to awaken even a shred of conscience in Song Yaoyao.
After the initial shock came overwhelming anger at having his conspiracy exposed.
Song Yaoyao turned her head and hysterically roared at Ling Huanwu, her voice as sharp as a knife, "You actually called the police! Who told you to call the police! Your man doesn't want to be the regimental commander anymore, you're a jinx..."
"I told you to call the police!"
Zhou Jiuzhen stepped out from the crowd and stood beside Ling Huanwu, his gaze as cold as ice as he stared at her. "Do you think the organization would dismiss me for something like this? Everything has to be considered from various factors. Besides, Huanwu's household registration was already transferred from the Ling family when we went to the countryside. Now her household registration has come with me to Wantan Island. No matter what your Ling family does, they can't hurt her!"
Ling Huanwu opened her blurry eyes and looked at Zhou Jiuzhen's hand beside her, their fingers intertwined. Her heart melted completely.
After she came of age, she tried every means to move out of the Ling family's household registration, but they kept her household registration book and she couldn't do it, so she tried every means to go to the countryside.
Little did I know that Zhou Jiuzhen knew all of this!
Zhou Jiuzhen turned around and their eyes met, and the two gazed at each other affectionately in front of everyone.
All of this felt like a knife stabbing into Song Yaoyao's heart, causing her unbearable pain.
“Zhou Jiuzhen, you blind fool, why are you so nice to this bitch? Do you know she was locked up and humiliated for half a month back then? She’s just a…”
Seeing that she was going too far in front of everyone, Zhou Jiuzhen stretched out his long arm and pulled Ling Huanwu into his arms, covering her ears with his hands to prevent her from hearing those foul words.
Two police officers rushed up and tied Song Yaoyao's hands behind her back, who was still cursing wildly, and were about to take her away.
Just then, Zhou Shuyao returned home drunk and saw his wife being led away. Confused, he rushed over to stop him.
But when he heard what Song Yaoyao said next, he froze completely.
"She's just a used woman who's been played around with a few times. You're still protecting her? She'll get you killed sooner or later!"
One second Song Yaoyao was cursing and swearing, the next second she saw Zhou Shuyao and immediately switched to a pitiful expression, crying and begging Zhou Shuyao for help.
"Shuyao, save me! My brother and the others have wronged me..."
Zhou Shuyao ignored her pleas for help, staring blankly at Ling Huanwu, a hint of heartache he himself didn't realize flashing in his eyes. He raised his voice and asked, "Did you really have an affair with someone else before you got married?"
His voice was mournful and angry, as if he were the husband betrayed by Ling Huanwu.
"Zhou Shuyao, this is my wife, what's it to you!"
Zhou Jiuzhen's forehead throbbed, and he roared at Zhou Shuyao under everyone's gaze.
An awkward stalemate ensued.
For a moment, Ling Huanwu was in a daze.
Zhou Shuyao's almost out-of-control expression now seems to be a return to the day he learned of this news in his previous life.
That was the year her mother-in-law and Zhou Jiuzhen passed away. She and Zhou Shuyao rushed home to handle their funeral arrangements.
When Song Yaoyao, who had become a widow and whose reputation was ruined, saw the two of them return in glory, she also publicly recounted the story of how she had been imprisoned for half a month back then, just like today.
Zhou Shuyao's expression back then was the same as it is now.
In this life, she is not his wife, and he has not developed feelings for her over time. So why does such a heart-wrenching expression flash across his face?
Ling Huanwu couldn't understand his thoughts, so when he reached out to grab her without regard for anything else, she stood behind Zhou Jiuzhen to avoid his touch.
It's unclear what she did that angered him, but Zhou Shuyao, as if possessed, grabbed a carrying pole from the side and pointed it at Zhou Jiuzhen, roaring at him hoarsely, "I don't care, Ling Huanwu can't be a slut! Today she has to tell me exactly how many men she's had!"
